TFP Lite

Would it be possible to have a "lite" version of TFP without the pictures ([img] images still show), avatars, smilies, and sigs? Would it let up some of the load on the server?

This is how www.genmay.net implemented it
It is a Style option (like Dark Cloud or Sandstorm).

if not a terrible hassle for the powers that be, it would make surfing the non-titty sections of TFP a whole lot safer for work...

To turn off all the images in all the posts:

1) Click on "User CP" at the top right of your screen.

2) Click on "Edit Options".

3) Under the "Thread View Options", select "NO" for both "Show user's avatar in their posts" and "Show image attachments and [img] code in Posts"

By doing this, you have shut off all the linked and attached images on the board. And saved the admins a little bit of work.

Thats almost what genmay has as light. But it takes out all the pictures that load with every page, the logo, buttons (add, new, ect) and replaces them with text links. And it keeps the [img] as pictures in the threads. Is there a way to turn off the images for the buttons and stuff?

Oh yea, and it also cuts out stuff like replies, views, last post date.

EDIT: Thanks meanSpleen for the info on how to link an image on a FTP server, but I installed Apache anyways.

Oops, I didn't notice the large difference between the 'lite' and 'regular' versions. Maybe I should actually look at the pics before I start responding.

Anyway, what you asked is really up to the admins on the site. We'll make sure this comes to their attention, and see if they want to implement a lite version of tfp. Thanks for the suggestion

Deleting it from the template doesn't prevent the script from calculating it. FYI.

I like text links over regular buttons regardless. However, the bandwidth savings are basically nil, since your client caches the images anyway.
