Marcus Vick dismissed from Virginia Tech football team

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick was dismissed from the team Friday, the result of numerous legal transgressions and his unsportsmanlike conduct in the Toyota Gator Bowl.

Marcus Vick, eluding a Louisville defender in the Gator Bowl, stepped on the leg of another Cardinal player who tackled him in the first half.

University president Charles Steger announced the dismissal on the same day that coach Frank Beamer met with Vick and his mother in their Hampton Roads home, the school said in a statement. Beamer informed them of the decision during the meeting.

Vick, the younger brother of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, was suspended from school in 2004 for several legal problems. The junior came under new and intense scrutiny this week after replays showed he stomped on the left calf of Louisville All-American defensive end Elvis Dumervil during the Jan. 2 bowl.

No penalty was called on the play and Vick claimed its was accidental. He further hurt his cause by claiming to have apologized to Dumervil, the NCAA sacks leader, but the Louisville player said no such apology was ever offered.

On Friday, it was revealed that Vick had been stopped for speeding and driving with a revoked or suspended license in Hampton on Dec. 17, Cpl. James West said. Vick's license had been taken away in August 2004 when he was cited for reckless driving and marijuana possession in New Kent County.

Steger suspended Vick from school at that time, and warned that any additional problems would effectively end his time as a member of the Hokies' football team.

"The university provided one last opportunity for Vick to become a citizen of the university and readmitted him in January 2005, with the proviso that any future problems would result in automatic dismissal from the team," Steger said Friday.

Beamer said in a statement that he was disappointed with the outcome. "We wanted what's best for this football team and Marcus," he said. "I certainly wish him the best."

School officials said in a statement that there would be no further comment until a news conference Saturday. Beamer, Steger and athletic director Jim Weaver, who said the stomping embarrassed the university, were all expected to attend.

A telephone message left on Vick's cell phone was not immediately returned Friday, and his mother, Brenda Boddie, has an unlisted phone number.

Vick said before the Hokies' 35-24 comeback victory in the Gator Bowl that he planned to return for his senior season. Now, his choices are to declare for the NFL Draft by the Jan. 15 deadline or transfer to a Division I-AA school so he can play next season.

Vick entered this season knowing he would face hostility from opposing fans, mostly stemming from his drug arrest and another for serving alcohol to underage girls during the 2003 school year.

He said he was ready for it, but reacted to chants of "rapist" and "child molester" at West Virginia on Oct. 1 by making an obscene gesture in the direction of the crowd. He met with Beamer following that incident and apologized to the team.

In the ACC championship game against Florida State, he drew an unsportsmanlike conduct flag for spiking the ball after a touchdown run with the Hokies trailing, and following the 27-22 loss, walked by reporters after the game without commenting, saying he didn't have to.

He finished that game 26-for-52 for 335 yards with one interception and a fumble near his goal line that teammate Duane Brown recovered. Vick threw one scoring pass and ran for two more touchdowns, but also was sacked six times for minus-35 yards.

On the field, he was often dazzling, but sometimes tried to do too much.

The Hokies started 8-0 and were No. 3 in the polls when they hosted Miami on Nov. 5. But Vick threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball away four times in a 27-7 loss.

This season, he was runner-up to Wake Forest's Chris Barclay as the conference's offensive player of the year, and was voted the first team quarterback on the all-conference team.

In 24 career games, the last 13 starts, Vick was 207-for-346 for 2,868 yards, 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also rushed 184 times for 492 yards and six TDs.
What a loser. Reminds me of Adrian McPherson, only with a better pedigree.

Just another case of wasted talent. Hope he likes the Arena League.

Before or after they dragged the linebackers off and scraped him off the turf?

If the ref saw it, that's likely an ejection, fine and suspension. If not, just the latter two.

He really shouldn't have played after the WV game, and his antics there to the crowd, as well as being stopped Dec. 17 for driving with no DL... LOSER using his brother's fame to play.

Mr. Vick meet Mr. Clarrett..... Mr. Clarrett meet Mr. Vick. 2 great talents that will end up as never weres sharing drinks and reminiscing about days gone by, as they curl under the bridge and share a blanket.

Maybe Art Schlichter and a few others can join them and share the money and fame that will exist only in their minds.

Definitely an idiot. He is making mistake after mistake, with no real understanding of the consequences. Supposedly, he told a local radio station something about how he was not worried about it and how he will just go to the next level now (NFL).

He has NFL talent, and will be drafted, for the sake of that particular team, lets hope he matures.

Probably not without intense therapy, and I doubt he'll admit that he needs it. I've got a feeling he's about to learn one of lifes hard lessons.

I think he is delusional re: his NFL future. NFL teams tend to overlook past legal problems but are extremely wary of players with a past drug history.

It is very easy to not get caught in college, given how teams can control the players, and there is no mandatory or surprise testing. If you do get caught, they think you are just plain irresponsible.

He did not put up NFL-type stats in college. He only had 13 starts. He is a very selfish player. As others have stated, he is trying to ride on his brothers coattails. Maybe in college, but the NFL is a no BS league. Put up or shut up. There are so many examples of guys who couldn't or wouldn't put in the time and responsibility it takes to be an NFL QB and just washed out before they even started. If he does get drafted, I think it will be in the third or later rounds, with a low minimum, incentive driven contract. Like I said, past drug use scares many teams cause a suspension by the league screws the team as much as the player. Teams cannot afford to 'waste' a draft pick or practice reps on a prima donna.

Here in Tampa we used to have Shawn King. He had great college stats.(All time NCAA percentage passer, I believe) He led the Bucs to the NFC championship game and then was cut the next season basically because he was lazy and would not spend hours in the film room trying to get better.

Good Luck in the real world Marcus. Mickey D's is always hiring.

Now im not going to say that he's not going to make it in the NFL, because he obviously has talent. BUT this dumb mother F*$ker really screwed himself up with these antics. I mean come on, he gets suspended for an entire year for all the trouble he was getting, finally gets reinstated, has a decent year and was looking promising going in to the next year then does stupid things like that. Im glad he was kicked off/banned from VaTech, he definitely deserved it, he could have really hurt Dummervil who is a 1st rounder this year.

As a cane fan I could care less about how this hurts the hokies, but im sure they and most others are saying good riddance. I don't think this guy will make it in the NFL just based on the fact that he's only started about 13 or 14 games.. Anyway I hope he gets payback one day in the NFL if he does make it.

I think most people, in their zeal to kick Marcus Vick while he's down, are overlooking an important aspect to this story. What is Virginia Tech's responsibility here?
They allowed him to play in the bowl game even after his latest run-in with the law. Apparently they could live with that. But he kicks some guy in the heat of competition and suddenly he's crossed the line and is thrown off the team?
Sorry, I'm not buying it. They let Marcus play in the bowl game because they needed him to win. Now that the season's over, they're seizing upon this minor on-the-field incident as an excuse to ditch him since they don't need him anymore.

He is a thug.

Some NFL team will take a chance on him with a late round draft pick.

What a fucking waste of talent. There are so many kids out there who want so badly to have what Baby Vick was gifted with, and would never even dream of so carelessly tossing it aside.

That being said, he will be drafted (for God's sake, Mo Clarett was drafted, not only with all his baggage, but after an absolutely embarassing showing at the combine), but if he ever makes it to a starting position, which I highly doubt, he'll only be another team-killer like Terrell Owens, but let's not get started on that fucking degenerate.

They'll be sharing a prison cell before they share that blanket under the bridge

Vick is a punk. He never had to work for anything. his older brother paid his dues and apparently marcus thinks michael paid his too. He was never even close to as good as his brother was. What a loser. Good riddance, he was making the ACC look bad.

It's amazing that some one can drop so far so fast. Just a few months ago ESPN was talking about vick being a first round pick. Now he just got in trouble again by flashing a gun at some kids who were giving him are hard time. What a waste of talent. He has some serious issues.

I have no pity for this prick.... Look at Juan Dixon, someone who got the absolutel most out of his talent and excelled all the while being an absolute model citizen. Not to mention both his parents died of heroin addiction and he raised his younger siblings. All the while he's going to college and doiong exceptonally. What a wonderful story. This makes me want to douse Vick with gasoline and set him on fire.... for 30 seconds then put him out, then set again, and repeat until he dies a gruesome death. Seriously that's schtick but this prick needs to get a dose of reality and needs to start appreciating what God gave him. He doesn't have to be a role model but at the very least he should "pretend" to be at least a "decent" human being. F that idiot!
