College World Series Anyone?
In perhaps no other major sport is there such a distance between the college and professional level. I can only think of a small handfull of players that have gone straight from the college level to the pros without spending significant time in the minors.
At the same time, that's part of the beauty of the thing. Schools like Rice and Stanford, and Cal State Fullerton (well, not this year) compete with schools like Nebraska, Miami, LSU, and UT. I've always gotten a kick out of the CWS, even if alot of the big names aren't there this year. Maybe because they use aluminum bats, the scores are often in the double digits, and it's more like overgrown little-league, but I think it's one of the few remaining amateur team sports remaining, and I love watching it. Even before Baylor was in it, and I had to pick a team to root for on ESPN2, I always liked watching it, just because the games are alot more fun to watch than Major League games, and the big leagues don't even count until late August, anyway. Now that Baylor is in it, well, I don't have to try so hard to pick a team. Anyone else get a kick about the baseball tournament about to start in Omaha? |

I'm a big college baseball fan. Its a shame miami and FSU didn't make it to omaha, though. I'll still be watching it. I don't know why I like college baseball more than the pros, maybe its the 'PING' or maybe its that the games seem faster. I'm not sure

It's rare when SoCal goes without any teams in the CWS. No Dirtbags (Long Beach State), No USC, No UCLA, No Cal St Fullerton, No Pepperdine.
I'll still watch, something about that PIIIIING!

And for me, the PINGGGG is the turn-off, or at least distracting. I'd think by now, an aluminum bat that sounded and acted like wood could have been developed. I understand in Little League and Babe Ruth why they use those "tin can" bats--the savings in $$$ is huge--but at the college level, I'd like to see it with wood bats.

I watched part of the OSU game, mostly because Micha Owens was pitching for OSU. The DBacks took him as their 5th (I think) draft pick. Not only can the guy throw but he also bats 6th in the lineup. It would be cool as hell to see a pitcher someday with hitting skills good enough to pitch and DH on his off days.
