Mike Tyson quits
Mike Tyson stays on stool after 6 rounds.
Quote:
His last few fights have been jokes with him saying exactly what they were for, to pay of his debt. I personally hope he stays down as he is nothing in the fight game anymore. Linky Here

*Insert own "fade into Bolivian" joke here*
Seriosuly though, sad day. I never actually saw him fight in his prime, and that upsets me, as even though I'm not a huge boxing fan, I think I would have enjoyed that.

Tyson ought to get to beat the shit out of Don King, the most praised enabler ever. With a real manager he would have never lost to Buster Douglas way back when (1990), likely would never have raped Ms. Washington, and possibly could have retired a five of years ago undefeated after breaking Rocky Marciano's record. Instead, we get the man that was greatest boxer of the 1980s and the greatest waste of the 1990s. |

I saw the fight last night; it was odd that he even agreed to fight a man so much taller and heavier. McBride leaned on him and held him for the entire fight. Tyson started to tire out in the 5th and 6th, and looked as if he was on the verge of being knocked out. I don't blame him for head-butting McBride or twisting his arm; I can imagine it is very frustrating to be repeatedly held when all you want is a little space to, god forbid, actually box. Good tactic my McBride, but just frustrating and boring to watch. Nonetheless, McBride isn't anything special, and Tyson hasn't been in over 10 years. |

I actually thought Tyson would be KOed by McBride (before the fight started). His promoters are incredibly inept in giving him back-to-back superheavyweights considering his history of problems with bigger guys. It's not like it really mattered though; if he had beaten a few smaller-sized cans it would have just set him up for a thrashing by someone like Lamon Brewster. Seeing him try to DQ his way out of the fight was sad and even more so when he had to voluntarily quit.
I acknowledge Tyson as an extremely overrated boxer, but I've never despised him, strangely enough. Reading the ESPN article and many other Tyson interviews, it is clear he is not delusional about being an awful person, boxer, father, or husband. I somehow doubt he'll actually take up missionary work, but if he manages to fall off the radar and live a quiet existence, I'll be impressed. |

I'll miss the old Iron Mike. He was awesome, made watching heavyweight fights fun again, when "good heavyweight fight' was an oxymoron. The amount of excitement he brought to a fight was off the scale when he was in his prime, the same aura of excitement Michael Jordan brought to basketball. And for a while, he could back it all up. There was that weird enigma between the soft-spoken, engaging, goofy and articulate Tyson, and the ferocious, dominating boxer that he became in the ring. A bright, bright light that faded out quickly.

I miss the old Mike Tyson of the 80's. He was a combination puncher who was
hungry to succeed. When he went from a combination ko fighter to the one punch was the start of his dimise. Don King certainly did not help his career. But it is time for Mike to retire, because he is a shell of his former self. |
