What's your vertical?
All you skywalkers, do you know what your vertical is? I'm vertically challenged (5'8") but not when it comes to leaping ability. I reach 7' 3" flat footed in my gym shoes. I'm a couple of years shy of hitting the big 4-0 but I can still jump up from under a rim and touch it, standing vertical jump that is. I guess my vertical now is about 35", a few more inches higher in my teens.
I read somewhere that the average male jumps well under 2', about 19". What's your vertical, real numbers only, no bluffing. BTW, I'm an Asian. |

I'm 6'8" with hops. I can give you just about any dunk you want, including a nasty windmill that I cup and bang. We don't measure verts in Europe but this is the highest I have ever jumped and I had a 33" in college. I'm probably somewhere between 34"-36" right now.

Well, I remembered back in high school PE class I was almost always the last one picked when scrimmaging for flag football, basketball and volleyball. Even after I showed that I could shadow some of the bigger, taller players. This was back in the 80's in Southern Cal. I could only conclude the one reason for it - being an Asian.
I wouldn't mind being 6' or 6'2", I probably still can't do the fancy dunks but at least I'll be able to do more damage around the rim and above the volleyball net. |

back in high school I was playing basketball with some friends and I swatted my friend's shot almost Shaq-like. now, I'm about 5'9'' or so, and my friend was 6'6'' AND jumping...I'm not sure how high I got, but I used to have pretty good hops. now, 4 pretty nasty knee injuries later (one of which occurred about 3 weeks ago), my vertical is about 6 inches at best, haha.

Now...well it's about the thickness of a piece of paper, like Vlade
Back in high school when I was about 100 pounds and 10,000 beers lighter, it was probably 28". I could dunk sometimes with one of those mini basketballs.

Well, considering I can barely touch the hoop despite my significant height, I'd say I have a 24" leap on my best day. Never did have any ups, but I can still crash the boards thanks to my extra-long arms.

Being short with hops make people raise eye brows. Last night playing volleyball I had several block on guys that are 1/2 foot taller than me. I think I was the second shorted guy on court. Then again, I get my fair share of "roofs", too. I think vertical is more of natural born talent, but extensive training won't hurt, either.

In high school I was 6'3" and 175lbs, and I played center on the varsity for 2 years. For me it wasn't the hops or strength, neither of which I had. It was the positioning. I held my own against everyone I played against, except the 6'9" all-american who was strong enough to push me around with his elbows! I hated him.

In college it was 40" at 6'2" I could fly. Twenty years later, 1 ACL and 60 lbs I'm there w/ goddfather40, though I might be able to get 2 sheets of paper under there. It ain't the going up that's the problem it's that dadgummed coming down!! BTW I retired 10 years ago from hoops!
