Ben

Roethlisberger...

does

not

lose.

just thought I'd mention that. Ye Gods is this season fantastic!

carry on...

radioguy 01-08-2005 02:31 AM

are you sure?

i seem to remember him losing to iowa his last year in college. :)

he's a damn good quarterback.......so far. hopefully, he can keep it up.

absorbentishe 01-08-2005 07:56 AM

He's the man, without a doubt. But, if you put any quality quarterback in the system, they might do as well too. They've not made him do too much, but on the same token, he's made all the right decisions. He lives about 40 miles south of me, so it's really cool a "home town" guy is doing so well, esp. for my fav. team.

crewsor 01-08-2005 10:25 AM

He has been very good so far. Nothing spectacular stat wise, but he does what is asked of him, which has done the trick so far. However one season does not make a great Quarterback. I recall Steelers fans singing the praises of the great Tommy Maddux. Now its Tommy who?

It wouldn't surprise me to see him in the Superbowl this year though, given the dominating play of the entire team this year.

archer2371 01-08-2005 12:45 PM

The Quarterback God giveth, and the Quarterback God taketh away...
However, I don't think that will happen with Roethlisberger, two reasons, he doesn't try to do too much, he hands the ball off to The Bus or Duce, maybe passes the ball 15 times a game, and makes smart plays (yeah, that's all one reason, just subsections of one). Number Two, he's big, hence the nickname, he could play linebacker if he wanted to, and he's very difficult to bring down for a sack, causing so many fits for a defense.

As much as I hate to say it, Pittsburgh will win the Super Bowl.

Shpoop 01-08-2005 03:00 PM

lets hope the same thing does not happen to him that happened to kordell stewart...i like the guy too much.

and kordell is just garbage

canuckguy 01-08-2005 03:35 PM

ben is a good QB ON a great team. i don't believe the hype yet.

I've seen every play of every Steeler game this year. Ben is BETTER than the hype. This guy is Elway, Favre, Montana and Bradshaw all rolled into one package.

He's scary good.

And the best part is...

He's only a rookie. He WILL get EVEN BETTER!

theusername 01-08-2005 10:07 PM

Ben is a good rookie QB on a great team. Name the last good rookie QB though. Marino? I think that is the only one i can think of.

well i only saw 8-9 games he played in so i could have missed something. and it looked like if it was maddox out there instead they would still win. he had some nice throws, but pittsburg would have won with nearly anyone at qb. did you see that espn thing where they followed him around on draft day, i felt so bad for the guy, he is a good guy and i do like him, just can't really say much he is on such a strong running team, would be interesting if say he was switched with eli manning or boller in baltimore to see if the performance would be the same.

If I'm not mistaken isn't the Steelers passing game ranked about 28th out of 32 in the NFL? And in the AFC only Baltimore is ranked lower in passing. So I still say, no matter how many games you watched, it may be a tad premature for the comparisons to the all time greats. Any Quarterback can hand off the ball.

Sion 01-09-2005 02:06 PM

look at his passer rating. the yards are irrelevant.

5 Ben Roethlisberger: 2621 yds 295 atts 196 cmps 17 tds 11 ints 58 long 98.1 rating

5th in the entire NFL. This is a rookie, folks! This kid is going to be a great QB for a LONG time.

Rudel73 01-09-2005 02:14 PM

as long as the steelers keep that amazing O line and great set of receivers he sure will be a great QB for a long time

When you hand off the ball 65% of the time, it tends to help get the defense away from the passing game enough to allow a rating like that. Having Ward and Burriss helps a little too.

Sion 01-09-2005 04:23 PM

how did Ben do against the Ravens?

Very similar to how his season went. 40 handoffs, 14 for 19 in pass attempts, for 221 yds, 2 TDS, 1 int. Decent numbers, but not quite hall of fame caliber.

goood one, lol,

keep your drinking to the allegheny

he been soo awsome soo long this year, it's only time he loses, but if he wins everything to the superbowl, he is going to be pretty darn famous...

but now he's getting beat down alot and the other teams are getting rougher since he's a big target now, soo i don't see him lasting, just from the physcial factor of the game

I notice that you conveniently forgot to include his passer rating in that game: 125.1 which IS HoF caliber play.

oh and here's a couple more numbers to chew on:

completion %: 73.7
yards per attempt: 11.6
yards per completion: 15.8

and THOSE numbers are pretty friggin sterling too.

and against the "vaunted" Ravens D to boot.

but hey, if it helps you to sleep better thinking he's just a good system QB, more power to ya, I guess.

oh, you mean like when Burress tooled the DB and got deep early in the game and Ben threw a perfect pass that dropped neatly into his hands just as he crossed the plane of the goal, some 36 yards from the LoS?

or like when he rolled left on 3rd and goal from the 2 early in the 3rd quarter, spotting and hitting a wide open Jerame Tuman (sure a future HoF pass catcher) for the TD? You remember that play right? The same play that Suggs cheap shotted Ben and caused his injury?

face the facts boys. Ben has to put the ball where the receivers can catch them. Ben does that as well as any QB in the league. If, in your jealousy you want to call him a system QB, go right ahead. You'll be proven wrong in time. Repeatedly proven wrong.

Big Ben is the real deal and he's going to be torching the Ravens and the rest of the NFL for years and years to come.

Catmandu 01-10-2005 11:21 AM

Mr. Rothleisberger's college coach is taking over at my alma mater, Indiana U. I hope he has a thick skin, cuz the losing is going to come fast and furious.

archer2371 01-10-2005 05:14 PM

He may not have Hall of Fame numbers, but if he leads the Steelers to three Super Bowl wins, that will cure all ails.

You are right, he does have to put the ball where the receivers can catch it. Then again, anyone who is a starter in the league for more then a game can do that.

I'll tell you what. Let's get the Ravens and Steelers together for an exhibition game. We'll take Burriss and Ward, you can have Travis Taylor and Kevin Johnson, and we'll see who has the better numbers, okay?

so in other words, there is NO difference between say Tim Couch and Joe Montana, or Kyle Boller and Peyton Manning. It's ALL the receivers, right?

The numbers wont mean shit. Ben will win the game. That's what he does. That's what good quarterbacks do, win games. But just for the record, I'd still bet on Ben to out produce Boller in that situation.

btw, here's a comparison for you, from that same 12/26 Steeler Ravens game:

In the first half of that game, the Ravens ran more plays (15 rushes, 18 passes) and had more time of possession (16:53-13:07) than the Steelers (12 rushes, 15 passes). And yet not only were the Steelers winning (10-7) but also Ben's passer rating was TWICE that of Bollers (101.2 Ben - 53.9 Kyle).

so much for doing nothing but hand the ball off.

crewsor 01-23-2005 06:55 PM

Big

Ben

Just

Lost!

And looked pretty sad doing it. Hardly at all like Elway, Favre, Montana and Bradshaw rolled into one. This one was on him. The sad thing for Steeler fans is they most likely would have won against the Eagles. Such a shame.

Rdr4evr 01-23-2005 07:02 PM

He's lucky he didn't lose last week. This loss was well deserved thanks to him and his pathetic performance....what good is 15-1 if you can't do anything in the play-offs?

drakers 01-23-2005 07:08 PM

From Iowa, that was a great game that Iowa played against Ben R., it looks like he finally lost his winning streak. It was a great run though.

Sion 01-23-2005 07:48 PM

Im too pissed to talk about it now. perhaps tomorrow.

Ilow 01-23-2005 08:10 PM

I'm not normally one to gloat, but after this thread...

Baaaaahhhaaaaaahhhaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again the Steelers prove that they're a good, but not great team. Throw some more picks Ben, not every DB got one!

heccubusiv 01-23-2005 08:20 PM

The city of Pittsburgh is in true dismay. THere are random drunk people everywhere... at least by me, swearing and freaking out. On a more promising note, Dan Marino has the record for my picks taken back for touchdowns. Its his second playoff game against a great defense that shut down peyton. I knew going into the game it would be ugly. We just need some db's for next year to hopefully make a run

The_wall 01-24-2005 07:59 AM

Big Ben showed he was a rookie last night. He did a hell of a job for his rookie year though, and I defineatly think you'll be hearing a lot about him in the years to come.

I just hate that everyone thinks he does so great because he's a rookie. Tom Bradey, though not technically a rookie when he replaced Bledsoe, was only in his second year and until that time had no play time. He however took his team to a superbowl victory. Though I'm biased as a HUGE long time patriots fan.

djtestudo 01-24-2005 08:42 AM

Well, Big Ben's clock finally struck midnight...

("How late did you stay up to think of that?"

"I got to bed around two, two-thirty.")

socal 01-26-2005 11:33 PM

At the end of the day he is a rookie. His passes during the game had not juice. Something to work on during the off season. Can't wait till next year, but I do hope the Bus gives it one more year.

drakers 01-27-2005 07:36 AM

Rookies...some can play...but Roth. could play, he just finally lost and it just happened to be a huge game. He can only get better through the years.
