David Wells to the ... Red Sox???
Isn't this the same guy who has talked over and over about how much he loves the Yankees? If he meant any of it, how does he go and sign with the Red Sox?

I was just reading that article you linked from ESPN, seems like a pretty good contract for a 41 year old. He still is a good pitcher though, and the Sox can put up the runs to win with his decent ERA. You would think though, with the deal they offered a 41 year old Wells, they spice up the deal to a younger, Cy Young award winner, Pedro. Then again, Pedro's ERA shot up a lot last year, and he really gets hammered in late innings.

If his back can hold up, it could be a good deal for Wells.

as a red sox fan this is one trade I hope doesn't make the table.

I have a myraid of problems with David Wells, mainly old wounds that will never heal, but the guy can still pitch. He threw nearly 200 innings last season and only gave up 20 walks (1st with a min. of 195 innings pitched) with a WHIP of 1.14 (top 10). For amount of money the Sox are giving him, he is definitely worth the risk as a #3 starter. Wells has to make the starts and pitch the innings to bring the contract to its full value, which should give him plenty of motivation to stay healthy. I view this signing as a bridge to get Ben Sheets when he's a FA.
Plus, this will infuriate Steinbrenner every time Wells takes the mound in the Bronx. |
