Urban Meyer to Florida
I just saw on ESPN that Urban Meyer, from Utah, has accepted the head coaching job at Florida, replacing Ron Zook. The Domers at Notre Dame have to be upset about this, as everyone had Meyer going to ND.

I didn't.
I thought he had a good chance either way. The amusing thing is now Notre Dame is SOL. They fired their coach partly to get Meyer, and now he's gone.

This is definitely a new low point in ND history. If they couldn't get Meyer to come to South Bend, who can they get? It just keeps getting worse and worse for them.
Obviously Florida was the more attractive situation and I think they'll get back to the top where they belong with Meyer at the helm. |

Well, I didn't mean literally everyone. I would have preferred he stay at Utah. I hate it when the bigtime programs steal the rising coaches away from their schools, and no, I don't blame the coaches for bettering themselves, but how are the Utahs' of the world supposed to compete? He was what 21-2 at Utah, what happens to them now? Will they continue to be in a position for BCS bowls? Or will they fall back with the rest of the mid-majors? As an OSU Buckeye fan, I am glad we are pretty much at the top of the food chain, along with the USC's, Michigan's and Miami's among others.
Those coaches aren't lured away to better college jobs, they HAVE the best college jobs. Keeping them is another story.

Yeah yeah we got out-coached by a coach who got fired. As long as some changes take place during the offseason I'll get over it.
anyway. After thinking about it some. I've come to the conclusion that Urban Meyer is an untested coach. He took Utah from a loosing program to beating Texas A&M and BYU in a few years. Well I have news for you Mr. Meyer. Florida aint Utah and the SEC aint the Mountain West. good luck. you're gonna need it. |

i too think urban meyer should have stayed at utah... but out of florida and notre dame, it's no contest- florida all the way:
- some of the best football talent is in-state - you can get junior college transfers (something you can't do at notre dame) easier to attract out of state talent (would a top recruit rather go to florida or notre dame, where the style of offense has only started to resemble a pro-style offense the past 2 seasons?) - guaranteed to have good opponents every season Quote:

he's not gonna be able to play w/ the big boys @ the SEC.
he hasnt proven himself to me. utes are undefeated in a weak conference with bad ooc play. he'll have better talent @ uf, but the competition will also be better.

this is the next nebraska type coaching search. a fan base that expects bcs/mncs when you're basically in the middle of nowhere.
unless you can churn recruits like the ca/tx/fl schools, you're not gonna be able to be able to compete with the elite. the era of notredame/nebraska is over. (ps nebraska does have a decent class coming in this year, but that's due to the incentive of immediate playing time)

Don't ever forget that Bill Curry once fired Spurrier, and Spurrier took every opportunity to pile up points on Curry after that. I suspect that Karma will hit Florida very soon when South Carolina will be accused of throwing the deep ball against Florida when they're already ahead by 40 in the 4th quarter.

But, wow, I can't wait until it's time to tee it up against Central Florida. It's been a long time since I've looked forward to any season more than next year's. |
