Yankees vs. Red Sox

Is there a greater rivalry in all of sports? I can see some Laker vs. Celtics argument, but these two teams have hated each other for far longer.

I am a huge Yankees fan, and HATE the Sox with all of my heart. I hope they lose every game from here until the end of time. There is not even a single player I respect or like on the Red Sox. They will play well until August and then they will collapse like they always do! They SUCK and will never win a World Series again. At this pace they are lucky to make the playoffs.

I just hope you are watching the game right now

My greatest Red Sox memory is the one of Bill Buckner going to field the ground ball in 86. Awesome!

I am just kidding with you. My father is a huge Yanks fan, but my mother is a Sox fan. For Father's day (a little early) I got my father 4 box seats to the Sox Yanks game on the 28th of this month at Yankee stadium.

It is a great rivaly but it really loses something since the Red Sox Suck. I mean if there was a shot that the Sox would do something it may be more excitong, but they have not won a WS since 1918 - 1918!!!!! .

There is certainly a lot of emotion though. Boomer rocks. I am listening to the game right now over mlb.com

Maybe the soxcan develop the next greatest baseball player of all time and then sell him to the Yanks for $250k.

Oh forget it - they already did that. . .

heh at least we had the greatest hitter of all time..

on a side note.. I wonder if the Dodgers would have stayed in Brooklyn if that would be a bigger rivalry? They didn't really give much comp to the yanks..but they were close..

always has been about the money always will be untill salary cap.

And before anyone gets their pinstriped panties in a hiffer, let me present the best " it is ALL about the money arguement"

What happened during the years when CBS owned the Stankees?
How many world series wins? 0.

Why? They didnt spend any money.

I know a Sox fan is not complaining about money. You guys have a pretty high payroll too. Difference is that Soriano, Jeter, Pettite, Williams, and Posada were all developed in the Yankee farm system. Sure we have to pay to keep them, but it is not like the Yanks don't have any development. Look at who they have traded out of their system...Lowell and Milton to name two. The Sox spend money just like the Yankees, they just spend it in the wrong places. I guess letting Clemens go was a good move, huh?

bigblue,
50+million buys alot of talent, we are talking about Soriano, Jeter, Pettite, Williams, and Posada salaries, now add them to alot of teams and you have instant contender.
Oh Soriano played his "minor league" ball in Japan.

Yeah we spend some money..and most of it seems to be in the wrong places. The yanks are high and above any and all in the spending category though. Soriano isn't a product of the farm system. The money that we (sox) have spent in the last year has made the team better IMHO. Add a few more pitchers and we'll be where we need to be.

Soriano was bought as a minor leaguer for like 1 million. The Yankees saw what otehr teams did not. I bet any team in the majors would have spent that money knowing what they do now.

He also played for many years in the Yankee farm system. I remember a couple of years back (2000 maybe) the Sox had the highest payroll in the majors to start the season. They spend a ton of money and have nothing to show for it. The Yankees make a profit every year and have to compete with another baseball team as well as other sports. What do the Sox have to compete with in Boston?

Point is, that Yankees have a better orginization and anyone could spend the money if they wanted to.

Please.... the Pirates, Royals,Expos all have well over $200 million to spend on their 40 man roster, get real, go google payrolls, even in the 30's the Stankees had double the league average.

The mets spend $185mil for teams that suck. It is deeper than money. You cannot sign a bunch of Jackasses like Mo Vaughn and expect to win.

The Yankees have to compete with other sports and another baseball team? LOL that's funny. The mets sucks.. the knicks suck, the rangers suck beyond comprehension so I wouldn't really say they have alot to compete with in that area. At least in Boston we have to compete with the Bruins and the Celtics The Mets, Knicks and Rangers have huge payrolls and they still suck. I don't care how much money a team spends, I'm just a Red Sox fan and I will always hate the Yankees.. plain and simple. Another thing, this curse of the Bambino.. what a load of shit. There is no curse. People are so consumed in this thing.. it pisses me off. At least with Boston I don't have to worry about all the commercial bullshit either. Hell the Yankees are the biggest fad.. everyone wants to wear their logo. Why? Because they win all the time, nope.. just because they are "in style" most people that wear the crap couldn't even tell you a single thing about the Yankees. 98% of Boston fans can give you a full discourse on the history of the team. Sure there are some loyal fans in New York.. but we'll see what happens when the yankees hit a dry spell and don't win championships for a while..which will happen soon

It was so good to watch the Red Sox beat up the Yankees today in Yankee stadium. The yankees are in a slump aww where are all the "fans" now. The Red Sox are 2 1/2 games up in first place. Both will be in the preseason.. and I'm willing to bet that the Red Sox come out of the division if we keep hitting like we are now. Early? Yeah I know but I can hope right?

I am still here, and guess what...every year for the last three or four the Sox have been on top at one point through the season. You know what always happens...the CHOKE!!!! There are a ton of loyal Yankee fans. I have been watching the Yanks since I can remember. My father is a Yanks fan, and his father was. Here are who the Yankees have to compete with for headlines:

Nets
Devils
Giants
Jets
Mets
Islanders
Rangers
Knicks

Not all of those teams suck, and most have been very good over a ten year span. The Knicks, Devils, Nets, Rangers, Giants have all been to their championship game over the past ten years. How many NBA finals or NHL Finals have Boston teams been to over the past ten years? The Pats are the team with the most recent success. The Red Sox have competed with the Yankees in payroll over the past five years, and while the Yanks are a little higher, their success is immeasurably higher. The spend money, but more often than not they spend it in the right places. Tonight's game should be fun and I plan to watch. My father is going to the game with frint row seats on the first base dugout tonight as a father's day present from me.

I think this rivalry is the greatest in sports, and each team is better off when the other is playing well too.

I hope they don't trade for another bat and they just ride it out while Bernie and Nick Johnson are out. George is an ass about a ton of things and I dislike everything about him other than his desire to win. He underminds his manager, coaches and players at every turn. I am glad that he will spend the money though. There are plenty of teams that could spend the money and don't that it is nice to have him care about winning.

You're right this is the greatest rivalry in sports..and each plays better when the other is playing well. I wish the Red Sox would actually spend something on pitching. I hate all of our starters except for Pedro of course. we need a decent closer and some relief.. our bats are fine..(up until the last two games) Nomar lost his hit streak damn yankees

Please. If the Yanks offered Pedro $15 mil a year, for the chance to win the series, you know he'd jump at it. Or maybe you think he'd like to spend the rest of his career waiting until next year.

Yes, the Yankees spend money. And now, we also give EVERY team in the league money to help you try to beat us. When the other owners decide to piss it away on shitty players, or worse, not use it on baseball at all, then it's not our fault. The Yankees sign players to high salaries, but if they don't perform, they're gone.

And for my special friends, the Sox fans, we have the same rivalry a hammer and nail have. Let me refresh your memory.

Quote:
Dec. 26, 1919: Red Sox owner Harry Frazee gives Yankees a late Christmas present by selling them Babe Ruth's contract. Legend has it move was made to allow Frazee to finance Broadway show "No, No, Nanette."

May 1, 1920: Ruth hits first homer as a Yankee in 6-0 win over Boston. Ruth finishes season with 54 homers, more than twice as many as entire Red Sox team.

April 18, 1923: Yankee Stadium opens and Ruth hits a three-run homer in 4-1 victory over Boston. Yanks go on to win first of 26 World Series.

May 25, 1935: Ruth hits final three homers of career for Boston - the Boston Braves. Red Sox struggle to fourth-place finish.

1941: Ted Williams hits .406, but the Red Sox finish 17 games behind Yanks, who ride Joe DiMaggio's record 56-game hitting streak to 101 wins and another title.

Oct. 15, 1946: Red Sox, in first trip to Series since selling Ruth, lose Game 7 to Cardinals, 4-3, when Johnny Pesky holds ball and allows Enos Slaughter to score from first.

Oct. 1, 1961: On last day of season, Roger Maris hits record-breaking 61st homer off Boston's Tracy Stallard at Yankee Stadium. Standings have familiar refrain as Boston finishes in sixth place, 33 games behind champion Yankees.

Oct. 12, 1967: Boston's "Dream Season" comes to nightmarish end in Game 7 of Series as pitcher Jim Lonborg gives up seven runs in six innings to Cardinals. Maris, now with Cards, hits .385 in Series.

Oct. 21, 1975: Boston's Carlton Fisk hits game-winning homer in the bottom of 12th inning to win Game 6 of World Series. Next day, Red Sox take 3-0 lead into sixth inning against Cincinnati, but lose decisive Game 7, 4-3, on a bloop single in ninth.

June 18, 1977: Yankees don't seem to need Red Sox as a rival, since they have themselves. In sixth inning of game at Fenway Park, outfielder Reggie Jackson and manager Billy Martin share heated exchange and have to be separated in dugout. Yanks lose game, but win pennant by 2½ games over Red Sox. New York wins 21st World Series as Jackson earns "Mr. October" nickname with three homers in Game 6.

July 17, 1978: Defending champs find themselves 14 games behind Red Sox.

Sep. 7, 1978: Yankees travel to Boston for four-game series, trailing first-place Red Sox by four games.

Sep. 10, 1978: Yanks leave Boston with series sweep, outscoring Sox 42-9.

Oct. 2, 1978: With Yanks trailing 2-0 in seventh inning of one-game playoff, light-hitting shortstop Bucky Dent hits three-run homer to send them to 5-4 victory and AL East crown.

Oct. 17, 1978: Dent is World Series MVP as Yankees earn another championship.

July 4, 1983: Dave Righetti gives Yankee owner George Steinbrenner birthday present by pitching no-hitter against Red Sox in the Bronx. Wade Boggs, eventual AL batting champion, strikes out to end the game.

Oct. 25, 1986: Yankee fans don't know who to root for in a Red Sox-Mets World Series. At least they have a good laugh as Red Sox come within one strike from Series title in Game6, but allow Mets to put together three-run rally in 10th, capped by Bill Buckner's error. Two days later, Boston brings 3-0 lead into sixth inning of Game 7, but loses, 8-5.

Oct. 23, 1996: AL East champion Yankees win Game 4 of World Series when former Red Sox Wade Boggs draws bases-loaded walk in 10th. Bombers go on to win first Series in 18 years, 4 games to 2.

1998: Bosox win 92 games but finish 22 games behind the Yanks. Boston bows out in first round of playoffs; Bombers steam roll Padres on way to championship No. 24.

Oct. 13, 1999: Red Sox take a 3-0 lead in first two innings of Game 1 ALCS at Yankee Stadium, but lose, 4-3, on Bernie Williams' homer in 10th.

Oct. 14, 1999: Yankees overcome Boston's 2-1 lead in Game2 as Chuck Knoblauch and Paul O'Neill pick up RBI hits in seventh inning of a 3-2 win.

Oct. 16, 1999: The Red Sox rough up their former ace, Roger Clemens, on way to 13-1 rout of Yanks in Game 3.

Oct. 17, 1999: Yankees benefit from Knoblauch's phantom tag at second base in eighth inning, then score six runs in ninth for a 9-2 triumph in Game 4.

Oct. 18, 1999: Babe Ruth's daughter throws out the first pitch at Fenway Park. The Red Sox lose, 6-1, as Yankees clinch AL pennant on way to beating the Braves for yet another world championship. The Red Sox have not been back to playoffs since.

May 30, 2001: Pedro Martinez, gets caught up in rivalry, delivering brush back on the notion Red Sox are cursed by Ruth. "I'm getting tired of talking about the Yankees," Pedro says. "It's so stupid. It's starting to upset me. Look, I don't believe in damn curses. Why don't we just wake up the Bambino and I'll have him face me and maybe I'll drill him in the ass."

Sep. 2, 2001: Mike Mussina retires first 26 batters at Fenway Park before pinch-hitter Carl Everett breaks up perfect game bid with single in ninth inning. Mussina ends up with 1-0 victory against a pitcher familiar with perfect games - former Yank David Cone.

Dec. 26, 2002: After Yanks agree to contract with Cuban pitcher Jose Contreras, whom the Red Sox had coveted, Boston team president Larry Lucchino calls Steinbrenner's team "Evil Empire." Rivalry continues, as one-sided as ever.
Did I leave anything out?

It's hard to make an arguement for it to be the worst in sports because there is no real way to compare. But in baseball, it obviously is the biggest.

For Football it would have to be the Packers and the Bears, for Hockey, up in the air, as of late the Red Wings and the Avs, for all time, probably the Maple Leafs against everyone, for basketball, the Lakers and the Celtics obviously win out.

Meantime, enjoy this piece, by ESPN Page 2's Jim Caple. He's one of their better writers, even if he makes no attempt to hide his raging pro-Sox/anti-Yanks bias. He manages to zing the Yankees at least once in every column, even if it's not even about sports. Page 2 recently sent two writers accross the country to rate the ballparks. Fortunately, the other one got Yankee Stadium and Fenway, so the reviews could be as objective as possible. Fenway beat Yankee anyway. HERE Caple gives HIS favorite moments in Yankees history on the occasion of the Yankees' 100th anniversary.

Yanks for the memories
By Jim Caple
Page 2 columnist

Henry Ford founded his auto company, the Wright Brothers made the first airplane flight and the American League played the National League in the first World Series in 1903, but that year wasn't all good. The New York Yankees were also born in 1903.

If you weren't aware of their birthday, you're not alone. Thanks to the notorious midwest media, the Yankees have never gotten their full due over the years. In fact, they've received so little coverage that you might not remember these important dates from the first century in New York history ...

Jan. 9, 1903: Businessmen Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchase the defunct Baltimore Orioles and relocate the team to New York and rename them the Highlanders. In their first official move as owners, they sign left-handed relief specialist Jesse Orosco.

Jan. 10, 1903: Columnists and small market owners accuse New York of trying to buy the pennant.

April 1913: New York officially renames the team the Yankees, forcing Boston vendors to sell their entire stock of "Highlanders Suck!" T-shirts at a huge loss.

Jan. 3, 1920: In the most infamous and lopsided deal in American sports, the Red Sox sell Babe Ruth and their immortal soul to New York for $24 worth of beads.

April-Sept. 1920: Ruth hits 54 home runs to shatter the single-season record and earn two dozen nicknames, including the Bambino, The Sultan of Swat, the Consigliore of Crunch, the Lieutenant Governor of Lumber, the Chief Operating Officer of Bash, the Senior Vice-President in Charge of Purchasing and Slugging Percentage, the Right Honorable Ensign of Clout and the Notary Public of Horsehide.

April 18, 1923: Affectionately known as the House That Ruth Built, Yankee Stadium opens, setting the stage for many additional structures such as the Apartment That Rizzuto Built, the Townhome That Skowron Erected, the Duplex That Horace Clarke Leased and the Low Income Housing Complex That Pepitone Gutted And Sold Off As Luxury Condominiums.

Oct. 15, 1923: After the Yankees beat the Giants to win their first world championship, columnists and small market owners complain that there needs to be better revenue sharing, because the Yankees win the World Series every year.

April 1925: Ruth misses the first two months of the season when he accidentally eats a hot dog from the Yankee Stadium concession stand.

June 1, 1925: In a very poor career decision, Wally Pipp calls in sick and stays home laying on the couch and watching TV.

May 16, 1928: Billy Martin is born. He is bottle-fed by Ballantine.

July 4, 1930: The unsuspecting victim of a witches' coven, Rosemary Woodhouse, gives birth to the son of Satan, George M. Steinbrenner III.

August 12, 1931: Steinbrenner utters his first words, telling his nanny, "You're fired."

Oct. 1, 1932: In one of the most dramatic moments in World Series history, the Babe steps to the plate, points to center field and orders two dozen hot dogs.

May 30, 1939: Lou Gehrig ends his playing streak at 2,130 games, and Mayo Clinic doctors deliver the most obvious diagnosis in medical history, telling him that he has Lou Gehrig's Disease. It is only one of the many ailments named in honor of a Yankees superstar. Others include Epstein-Berra Syndrome, Non-Knoblauch's Lymphoma and of course, Mickey Pox.

July 17, 1941: Joe DiMaggio's amazing record streak finally ends when he signs an autograph without attorney Morris Engleberg charging for it.
