What happens to the BoSox now?

So are they going to dismantle as they did after the 1918 World Series, sell off their good players and dissapoint their fans for generations? Or will they try and build a dynasty and compete for more championships? My sources tell me the former is likely.

they have money to spend. I don't think the team will stay completely intact, but I think it will stay pretty much the same. There's a good owner in place and a good GM. I think they'll do what is necessary to keep a winning team on the field.

Pedro might be gone, that's about the only significant change I can think of.

I think they'll manage to keep Pedro.. hopefully with a 2 year deal. I don't think he has much more than that left in him.

I wish I were smart enough to have thought of this first, but I heard a local radio guy ask, "Now that the curse is lifted, whom are they going to blame for the next batch of incredibly bad luck? Or will they finally have to admit that they're mortal and pitiful like everybody else?"

One of Pedro or Lowe will be gone.

Varitek, Millar, Cabrera, Mueller (I think) are FAs.

Probably see turnover in the bullpen and bench.

They'll be strong next year too, that I'm sure of.

On KNBR (a San Francisco sports radio station) this morning they were talking about rumors that Pedro might want to sign with the Giants. Apparently he's good friends with the Giant's pitching coach from back in his Montreal days.

In the Sports Guy's Game 4 diary he had this entry:
Quote:
Good question from the Sports Gal: "Why wouldn't the Red Sox want to keep this team together if they win?" Because we're not the ones who would have to pay Lowe and Pedro a combined $90 million over the next four years. That's why.
I don't really have anything to add to that.

The Giants are too cheap to sign Pedro. They simply don't have the money needed to give him what he wants. If they had the money they would have traded prospects for Randy Johnson who is far superior to Pedro in every way.

That's just an awesome quote!

I think Boston's priorities should be in resigning Varitek and Cabrera. Varitek is a great catcher and in many ways the hard and soul of the team. Cabrera really sured up their infield and proved to be clutch in the postseason. There are plenty of good pitchers in the FA market this year, so acquiring quality pitching shouldn't be a concern even if both Pedro and Lowe leave.

Pedro won't want to play second fiddle

I don't see Pedro coming back. While he did good at the end, he had a so-so year, and the sox aren't going to want to pay him as much as he will demand. Pedro needs to be the center of attention, but with schilling around he's not. Pedro may be a great pitcher, but he's fragile, you're always afraid he's gonna hurt himself again. Curt is a great pitcher, and plays *through* his injuries!

They need to do everything they can to keep 'tek though - he's another guy that has proven he will go all out for the team.

I seriously doubt Pedro would sign a short deal like that. He will definitely get a longer deal from several other teams, and it appears that his resigning with Boston won't end up being a situation where he settles for less.

They'll lose some players in free agency but will also have some new additions. Anybody here about Millar talking about a communal shot of Jack Daniel's that the team had for Game 6 of the ALCS and every game after it. Wondering how this will play out in the Red Sox offseason plans? If it will at all.

Wow.

The Jack Daniels thing just did it for me. The Yankees are being classy about the loss as are the cardinals. But no the Red sox Just HAVE to be different. Instead you have Millar mouthing off, Pedro mouthing off, Manny's Jeter sign etc etc

don't have to read the signature to spot a bitter Yankee fan.
On a serious note, they will likely lose Lowe, and they are probably 50/50 on signing Pedro (if someone offers 4 years at 15 mill he'll be gone) The only guy they might pay over market value for is Varitek, so it's fortunate that most of the teams that could afford his services don't need a catcher. They probably won't sign Cabrara for more than two years plus an option because they have good young infielders in the farm system that are about two years away, but he'll probably get offers for five years from other clubs because he's reliable and durable. Kapler has already filed and I think that there are a couple more who are eligible so there's a distinct possibility that the team next year could be quite different, but this management is committed to making good financial decisions for the team in the long run and not ending up with tons of dead money (like a certain other team a couple hundred miles south).

Just remember... the 27th championship is always the hardest.

I think Boston owes it to their fans to stay competitive, and I think they will. Sigining Varitek should be a top priority for them. Letting him go means they still aren't thinking like champions, which is why it took them so long to buy... er, I mean put together a winning team.

Pedro is gone, he is useless against the yankees, he wants four years, he is on the downside of his career, he can crank it up at times hitting 94-95mph in that one inning second stint vs. the yankees and they still roughed him up.

Theo E. is obviosuly an excellent judge of talent and market value. It should be interesting to sit back and see what happens.
