The Umps finally get it right!

If you saw the Sox/Yankees game you know what I mean. They got the right call when they reversed the double into a home run and they got it right when they ruled that Rodriguez knocked the ball and glove out of the pitchers hand.

I would have been so wrong if the Yankees would have won because of two bad calls that were clear on the replays. It would have just reinforced the "curse of the Bamino" and that's all you would hear about the next year.

yankeefatboy 10-19-2004 09:03 PM

Yep, they got it right. It's not looking good for our heroes, but that's why we play the game. It would not have been right if we won the game because of the calls.

Heh... I think most of your brethren who were at Yankee Stadium would disagree. ;)

I think they already did...

If they had made them right in the first place, it would probably be the twins in the yanks place =P I think they got scolded pretty bad after that and told not to make the same mistakes twice..

eddo31 10-19-2004 11:35 PM

it is great to see the umpires get the calls right when it matters. i could really care less if they get it right initially or if they correct it with an umpires conference, but the most important thing is clearly they get it right.

this is the best result of the umpires union being broken a few years back. the egos are a lot smaller now, and they make sure to get the calls right in most situations.

runtuff 10-20-2004 06:00 AM

Its great to see the umps actually working hard together to make the RIGHT call rather than a snap call and sticking with it no matter what anyone else says or saw.

Jimellow 10-20-2004 09:39 AM

Yes, I agree completely.

Oftentimes the umpires are stubborn and don't review, let alone, overturn calls.

They definitely did the right thing here, and if they hadn't, can you imagine the ripple effect this would have had through the media, fans, and TV outlets?

Last night I was talking to my dad, and told him it would be interesting if a Boston journalist would write an article as if the play hadn't been overturned, and ultimately led to the Red Sox losing the series.

It was the first time I've seen a play like that, and I have to give props to the umpires for stepping back, talking, and making the right decision at a key moment.

Game 7 tonight is going to be THE game this year IMO, and I'm sure the ratings for it will be through the roof.

stevo 10-20-2004 10:31 AM

They should play the entire game with riot police on the field. I'd like to see that.

Well my friend, many games are won and lost on bad calls that once we see the replay, we know the opposite. Bad calls/no calls are part of any game, you can't throw in the replay card unless you're talking football.

yoyoyobro 10-20-2004 01:41 PM

Two calls reversed (correctly) in the Red Sox favor. Have to ask yourself is this the begining of the end of the curse?

Beatlefan58 10-20-2004 02:10 PM

I for one favor adding technology (i.e. replay review, sensors under home plate) to take out as many of the bad calls as possible. An experiment could be done in spring training games to see how to make it work best. No more umps saying "that's MY strike zone", no more bad calls deciding the big games. I know the argument about the human element being a big part of the game; I just don't accept that it has to stay that way.

The crew last night did great in getting it right, but I don't understand why the ump in the outfield has to get help on those calls? Same thing happened on a home run call in the first round (don't remember exactly which game, but I think it was Yankees and Twins); the guy closest to it missed the call.

Jay_Jay 10-20-2004 02:23 PM

I have to hand it to the umpires, I was sitting there watching there thinking that there is no way that they could reverse the call considering the amount of time that it took them to make both calls, but they proved me wrong and I must hand it to them for that. BUT how in god's good name did the the ump miss that homerun? I caught it out of the corner of my eye and still knew that it was gone, a ball doesn't hit the outfield wall and just trickle down like it did after hitting that fan.

bbbbbb555 10-20-2004 02:24 PM

it was good to see them go back 2 times and actually get the right call.
it makes the games a lot better.

Coincidentally, Bill Simmons wrote about this very thing earlier today:

Quote:

So what happens Wednesday night? I'm probably the wrong person to ask. I haven't slept in four days. My back feels like Schilling rammed his protective shoe against it. Even my jaw is sore -- from chewing gum like a madman during Game 5. The classic move would be for the Sox to come back, win three games in a row, then lose the climactic 7th game. But this isn't a classic Red Sox team. The old Red Sox would have blown Game 4 or Game 5, and they definitely would have choked in Game 6. With the old Red Sox, Bellhorn's homer gets ruled a double, A-Rod definitely gets called safe at first base, and Miguel Cairo clears the bases for the game-winner in the ninth.

Here's the point: Those things haven't been happening. Sometimes you pass a point where history becomes a factor -- like with the Patriots three years ago, when the diehards kept waiting for the Other Shoe to drop, and we were waiting and waiting, and suddenly Vinatieri's final kick split the uprights, the most liberating feeling you can imagine. That's the thing about baggage as a sports fan -- you can shed this stuff. You just need a few breaks. This Boston team is getting them.
Now, I *know* that Bill Simmons doesn't believe in The Curse, but he was awfully close after Game 3. But, I like his point here - things are finally starting to go right for the Sox, hopefully the other shoe (or emergency boot built by Reebok) doesn't drop, I would love to see them in the World Series this year.

Tonight is gonna be gut wrenching.

I was glad to see the umps making the correct calls. I for one would *HATE* to see replays in baseball. That's what makes the game unique. The fact that every ump calls balls and strikes differently allows better matchups. The way things are now should be fine as long as the umps are willing to reverse a call if necessary. From watching last nights game, I think they are on the right track.

oh and espi.. there is NO curse

runtuff 10-20-2004 03:20 PM

Well lets hope the umpires do not figure into the flow of the game. This should be a great game. I'm so excited, and so tired from watching all these late night games.

whiplash13 10-20-2004 05:50 PM

Mattingly is a coach on the Yankees now. Maybe his curse is stronger than the curse of the Bambino :)

aliali 10-21-2004 12:47 PM

They got the calls right, but with extra umps out there, why did the ones right there miss both those plays. Does it really help to have more of them out there?
