Jerry Rice "likely" to be traded to Seattle

Full story from ESPN

So, it's come to this. Jerry Rice, unhappy with being underutilized on a bad team, is going to be traded for a conditional seventh-round pick. Guess he'll be joining the list of woeful veterans who are signing with a contender in the twilight of their career to try to get that elusive ring before they retire.

Just kidding.

But that's partly the point I'm going to try to make. No one has to convince me that Jerry Rice is leaps and bounds ahead of any receiver ever in the Greatest in History vote (although I have visions of Randy Moss giving Rice a run for his money some day). Some have even suggested Rice is the greatest player ever, period. He's got the rings. He's got the records. He's got the respect. What is he trying to prove?

Time to hang 'em up.

he's still got a love for the game tho and competing. He had a good season last year, and maybe with the right team and a more active role on the field he could put up some good numbers and add some leadership. I wouldn't write him off just yet, no matter how bad his numbers are at the moment.

I hate to say it, but see ya later Jerry. He wasn't getting it done for us. He lacks the speed and can not keep up with the youngsters anymore. I wish him luck, but we need to let Gabriel or Curry take his place.

Porter is unhappy too. *sigh*

I live in Canada's pacific northwest, so I see way more Seahawks games than I wish to each year, but I can say that Rice should be a huge addition to the team. His speed and agility may be diminished, but his heart and hands are still as good as ever. The hands are a key when looking at someone like Koren Robinson, who already has more drops this year alone than anyone in the NFL last year, save three receivers (one of which being himself).

Randy Moss is the most overrated reciever in the NFL.

He only has one trick, outrunning the DBs while catching Culpepper's overthrown off-target hailmaryesque lobs.

His small frame is toast if he catches anything in the middle.

Now that's off my chest... I really hope Jerry finds a decent enough role in Seattle to keep on playing, this is the same guy who caught 100+ balls a couple of years ago, don't tell me he hasn't got anything left.

I'm sorry, what's the problem? What more does he need than outrunning everyone and making catches no one else can make? For touchdowns? Does this make him a bad receiver? I don't understand the argument. Don't make me throw stats at you. Have you seen him play?

He hogs the sidelines and comes off like a big man on the stat sheet if he has 3 grabs at 70 yards a pop.

I don't think he's worthy of the praise he gets because he's not a complete reciever.

I've seen him play and have been largely unimpressed by him.

A conditional 7th round pick for Jerry Rice a sad day for footballs best all-time WR

Rdr4evr 10-19-2004 03:17 PM

Seriously, what the hell are we going to do with a 7th round conditional pick, that is pathetic.

Bobaphat 10-19-2004 03:29 PM

I don't care what you do, but I am stoked for the 'hawks. This is coming at a good time since "butter fingers" Robinson is going to be suspended for a substance violation. He may not be what he was in his prime, but he still has the hands and that is exactly what Hasslebeck needs. Expect him to be a difference maker on this squad

7th round, wtf? maybe Al can trade up later?

Except for living up there, you took the words right out of my mouth. He can run the routes, and he can hold onto the balls. Matt Hasselbeck isn't a bad QB. He could be really good if he had somebody more reliable to go to. The only thing about Rice is that he lacks the speed to be a downfield threat, but he will be quite useful in certain situations.

To go further off topic, on the issue of Moss, you've heard about the fox and the hedgehog. The fox knows a lot of things, but is an expert at none of them. The hedgehog knows only one big thing (hunker down and let the spikes do the work, if ya can't figure it out). Anyway, even if Moss isn't a "complete" receiver, he's a hedgehog. He knows one big thing. Stretching the field, making the catch, and scoring the TD.

It's just like video games (or any other game). All you need is to master one effective strategy, and you can win just about every time.

Opinions on Moss are really warped, I find, due to all the negative press he received his first few years in the league, and you could say continues to get. People try really hard to find faults in his game because they either dislike him or are afraid he'll become better than anything the NFL has ever seen (ala Rice). Fact of the matter is that he's taken huge strides as both a person AND player since a few years ago, and he's actually a great team player and leader now. He also is putting up 100+ receptions a year now, and IS quite versatile on the field.

I don't think he's overrated at all. He's likely the most dangerous player on any given play in the NFL, due to his unhmanlike ability to get downfield and pull in a jump-ball.

A "conditional" 7th round pick? This is the best we could do?

To be honest, I'm not sure what to make of this.

Is it indicative of how bad Jerry Rice wanted out of Oakland or how bad Oakland wanted Jerry Rice gone?

Either way, good news for Seattle, I guess....

runtuff 10-20-2004 06:04 AM

Why do so many of the greatest players ever refuse to go out in style??? Add Rice to the list. He is the bechmark for what a great wide receiver should do, be like, but he's 40+ years old. All his teammates from the great 49er teams of the 80's yes the 80's have long ago retired. He should have learned from watching Montana go to the Chiefs and look foolish.

eagle1 10-20-2004 10:03 AM

Rice and Holmgren have a couple of rings together. Holmgren was the QB coach in SF when the Niners went to the Super Bowl. I'm kinda excited to see what Rice will do for the 'Hawks. Reminds me of when Seattle brought Franco Harris to the team.
