NFL's Best Hits/Hitters
My favorite sight in a football game is seeing a guy completly get his head taken off. Roy Williams, in my opinion, is the best at doing it. So, who's your favorite?

safetys usually make a lot of really big hits because they get good position on the play.
Rodney Harrison has always brought the heat. John lynch has always been a big hitter. And of course ROnnie Lott |
Keith Bulluck. The man is a beast.
|
I'm glad someone mentioned ronnie lott... that guy was a fucking freight train.... people who had been hit by cars said it hurt more getting hit by ronnie
|
Speaking of freight trains, how can you forget the man who influenced Ronnie Lott....Dick "Night Train" Lane. If you can catch some footage of his hits, check it out. He was a manimal; his specialty was taking you down by the head/neck.
Nowadays, I have to go with my boy Roy. He brings the pain. Ask Mr. Coles. |
the good old days... Dick Butkus !!!!
|
Rodney Harrison was a constant big hit threat in his hey day...Ray Lewis is probably the biggest hitter now. John Lynch. Roy. Arrington. Urlacher.
As far as all-time, let's not forget a little guy named LT. Can't forget hitters on the other side of the ball. Earl Campbell was a punishing runner. |
Ray Lewis is great..but he has lost a step recently.
Ronnie Lott..but nowadays most of his hits would be fineable Of course the best is DITKA..not sure if he even played defense but I like to say DITKA. |
Terry Tate. :D
Man, where'd he go? Those ads were brilliant, then faded away. |
John Lynch still has some good hits left in him
|
Dick Butkus was the first name that popped into my head.
But then I started thinking of names like Lawrence Taylor and Jack Lambert. One of my favorite was Steve Largent. I know, you say that he was a wide receiver. But back in 1988, the Seahawks were playing the Denver Broncos at Mile-High Stadium. Largent caught a pass over the middle. Denver safety Mike Harden threw a right forearm to the left side of Largent's face, shattering the facemask, dislodging teeth and leaving Largent briefly unconscious and with a sprained left knee. Fourteen weeks later, the Broncos were at the Kingdome. Harden intercepted a pass intended for Brian Blades and headed up the sideline. Largent took off after him like a cruise missile and hit him so hard he fumbled. Largent recovered the ball. Revenge was sweet that day. You can see the hit here: http://www.seahawks.com/MMSec.aspx?vid=60&MMSecID=9 |

He is the reigning NFL's Defensive Most Valuable Player. I live in Maryland, and I have the pleasure of being able to watch every Raven's game on local television. He has not lost step. As for the post, Strong Safety Donovin Darius of the Jaguars is a big time hitter. A lot of memorable hits come on turnovers or special teams. Two that I remember are Warren Sapp crushing Chad Clifton on a block and Ray Lewis leveling a Denver Bronco when McCallister ran back a missed field goal attempt 107 yards for a TD. |
To quote Peter King from his All-Pro team last year:

Gotta go with Lavar Arrington and Roy Williams. Roy puts some hellified hits on people.
And on a little known player...Kenoy Kennedy. Saw him put a few licks on people that were just flat nasty. I need to get a tape of the hardest hitting safeties and linebackers so when ever some schmuck says that football isn't that big of a deal because of the pads I can pull it out play them a few hits and watch them squirm. |
Cross-over, I like watching Ray Lewis. It is not that I want to think that but most unbiased observers have noticed a slight drop off where a year or so he would have caught up to someone but is unable to quite get there. That being said he is so good it is hard to tell because 93% of Ray Lewis is better than 100% of most others.
|
Lott was probably one of the greatest all time but Lewis is an animal.

You imply maybe he has lost a step, but do you get to watch a lot of his games? If you look back, he has actually more lean then he was a few years ago. I think he is quicker now than when B-more won the title. He always tracks guys down, he is in the prime of his career. |
Steve Atwater, who was a safety for the old Broncos superbowl teams. I remember watching several truly awesome hits of his.
|
I think Ray Lewis has lost a step too, but I still don't think he is overrated. He is the best at what he does, which is stop the run and protect the middle. He gets outrun SOMETIMES on outside runs, but his instincts are so good he is usually in the right place at the right time. No one is better than him at finding the ballcarrier, but he is a little bit slower now. I still think if he hit me I would suffer a mortal wound.
|
Anyone see Ray lay out L. Coles Sun. night? Tell me that dude don't hit hard. Made my teeth hurt just watching it.
|
There is a huge difference between losing a step when you are a good player, and losing a step when you are among the greatest ever. The latter doesn't mean much since you are still better then pretty much everyone else.
Take a look at Deion Sanders. He's 37 and has been out of the league for three years. He had an interception Sunday night where he ran stride for stride with Lavernious Coles, who is a pretty fast guy, and timed everything perfectly. Everyone knows he's lost a step, but he's still a very good player. |
Bill romanowski, was a big hitter with denver and oakland.
|
If you bring up Lott, you gotta bring up some of the other great Raiders like Jack Tatum and George Atkinson. Now that was football. Today they have the receivers wearing skirts. Oooohhh, ooohhh don't touch me...
A guy today that not a lot of people know about is safety Ken "The Hammer" Hamlin from the Seahawks. Dude can lay the wood. Seahawk fan can probably back me up on that. I love the way he plays. |
Ole Roy Williams definitely ranks with the best right now. he broke Emmit's collarbone for Christ's sake, and tore up both of Tyrone Calico's knees. People are just afraid when they cross the middle
|
I second Roy Williams, the man just buries people. Good example of how you dont have to be big to make some killer hits.
|
Taeko Spikes can hit a guy like no one else in the league
|
I think Roy Williams may be the biggest hitter in the game (but I am a little biased). That hit he put on Coles in the Washington game was amazing. I don't remember him tearing up Tyrone Calico's knees....when did that happen?
|
Steve Atwater could lay a harsh beating, but Ronnie Lott remains the all-time best.
I don't know how many of you were able to see the Seahawks play, but I caught most of their games last year and Ken Hamlin is just a reckless son of a bitch. I hope to god someone else saw the hit he laid on the Saints' Donte Stallworth last year; if I can, I'll dig up the still frame of Stallworth grimacing as his helmet is knocked flying off. It's only a matter of time before Hamlin gets himself in trouble, but that guy just DROPS opponents. |
