Looking for a good, low priced mountain bike

So I walk out my door the other morning and find my newly repaired (got to ride it 2 times) bike stolen- I have almost zero chance of getting it back
but want to ride, so I need a new bike- what I dont need is anything too fancy- I do not plan to off road it too much, I just need something good for heavy street use, dont need more than ten speeds- looking to spend about 100.00 or less- my main goal is something sturdy, weight is not much of an issue. anyone got any brands to recomend- any to warn me about?

Good question, I've been thinking about getting a bike too, but my needs are little different. $250 max, mostly off roading,& I don't know if I need more than a ten speed. So I'm in a similar situation as Fire, I just don't no what to look for and what to stay away from.

Fire, if I find anything that matches your specs when I'm looking for me, I'll let you know.

Sorry to say, it's been my experience with bikes that good pretty much excludes cheap. For 100.00 or less, to get something decent, you'll probably have to find a deal on something used.

if you can find a used Schwinn Highplains, that's a good one. I had one for years, rode it up curbs, up steps, down mountains, you name it, the damn thing refused to break. Finally took getting hit by a train (don't ask ) to kill it.

Check out Target or Walmart; they've got dirt cheap bikes that look decent enough to cruise around on.

I can vouch for the Schwinn Hichplains also.Thats a tough bike. I bought one about fifteen years ago and still use it as a second bike. Never had a problem with it. Just routine stuff like replacing chains and truing wheels.

roadmasters aren't bikes, they're a caterpillar tread away from being a tank. sturdy doesn't describe them.

sadly, under a hunnie means you're buying a sweat shop bike. even schwinns and amfs are made off shore now. go used, stay away from the college market and hit the burbs for yardsales or try craigslist.

Check the paper or call an auction house and see when the police auction is...might be coming up. In my city it happens twice a year and they have hundreds of bikes. You will definately find an awesome mountain bike for a great price. I got a basically brand new Peugoet (spell??) 21 speed hybrid bike for about $200. I love it. Road tires on a mountain bike frame. I use it all the time to bike to work and around the town.

It's an idea for you to look into.

Check Sam's club. Last time I was in there they had a decent looking bike that was pretty cheap. I think it was a Mongoose or something.
