Cubs Fan? Buehler? Buehler? Buehler?

So, any Cub fans around? I am a HUGE Cubbie fan and I am getting nervous about our prediciment (sp) in regards to the wildcard (cuz let's face it, we ain't gonna catch up to the Tards), what ya think our chances are now? Speak amongst yourself...

soccerchamp76 09-13-2004 01:26 PM

Slim

Very slim

dylanmarsh 09-13-2004 03:40 PM

The way Houston is playing right now and with six teams vying for one spot, I have some serious doubts about the Cubs. They shoulda traded for Orlando Cabrera and left Nomar to rot in Boston. Thank you for taking Nomar. Yours truly, every single Red Sox fan.

goppers 09-14-2004 05:13 PM

3 months ago I'd be shocked that I'm saying this, but I second what dylanmarsh said about nomar.

bobw 09-14-2004 07:59 PM

Big fan here, but unfortunatly the chances are dwindling....

retsuki03 09-15-2004 12:27 AM

Cubs are falling apart

Go Stros!!!!!!!

Craven Morehead 09-15-2004 05:39 AM

Cubs only win when they hit more homers than th eopposing team. They can't manufacture runs. To many injuries, relief pitching is suspect and not the right chemistry. Something's missing on the team this year. Maybe it was Kenny Lofton or another player but they don't seem to have that certain spark.

dmt767s 09-15-2004 09:24 PM

Huge Cubs fans here. That said, Prior isn't looking like the Mark Prior of 2003, he's reminding me a little bit of a Kevin Tapani with a fastball. They're too dependant on the home run. Too many nagging injuries. If they win the Wild Card (which is possible, they do lead in the loss column) I like their chances in the playoffs. As long as Bartman is kept far away from Wrigley and Nefi Perez is put in at short late in games in which the Cubs have the lead and need a ball to not be bobbled.

dylanmarsh 09-16-2004 08:48 AM

The 2004 Cubs remind me a lot of the 2003 Red Sox. They're gonna score a ton of runs, but without consistent pitching and solid defense, it might be a "wait until next year" season, again.

Let me be the first to say it, Curse of the Nomar!

Dingo2879 09-16-2004 08:58 AM

Huge Cubbie fan here, I have been for a long time, but I am not sure I even want to see this team in the playoffs. Last years team was fun to watch and root for. This year, because of there consistent need for the long ball to score runs, it's painfull to see them play when the wind is blowing in, or when they all get cold at the same time and some journeyman fifth starter pitches a 8 inning 2 hitter. Hopefully next year we can get rid of Alou, eventually get rid of Sosa and build around Patterson, Rameriz, Prior, Zambrano, Wood, and others.....

Kurant 09-17-2004 08:29 PM

Why do people contiunally discount Nomar? The Cubs got him for NOTHING. When are people going to realize that. If you want to debate the fact Nomar wasen't worth Alex Gonzo, then your an idiot. The Cubs make the world series last year if he doesn't bobble that ball turning that double play. Get the fuck outta Chicago.

Getting Cabrera would have most likely cost them Clement as well. Every team benefitted, and got what they wanted. Red Sox added defense, Cubs added defense, and a guy that can put the ball in play and hit 300+. Although, no one benefits from getting Gonzo, except the team getting rid of him.

Yes, I'm a Cubs fan too. We'll take Nomar all day for the nothing we gave up for him. The Cubs are 3 games behind Houston in played games, 2 behind San Fran. And ahead of both of them. The pitching is coming around ever so slightly, and Sammy seems to be hitting a little better. But, the inability to steal bases, get the ball in play, and play small ball just isn't there. They won't make the postseason like that. The pitching is weak this year, and they can't get runs without hitting the ball 360+ feet. It aint gonna work that way.

It's funny, I got crucified on baseball-fever.com for saying trade Sosa earlier this year. Now every bangwagon Cubs fan wants him gone. I've been saying it for 3 years I wanted him out. I guess it's too late, the Cubs are stuck with his 18 million next year. Gee, whoopie fucking doo.

dmt767s 09-17-2004 11:11 PM

I wanted Nomar a lot. I figured we'd get Nomar this spring before he went down. Gonzo, Beltran and Harris is next to nothing for a futre Hall of Famer and one of the BoSox' best farm hands. Last fall when Vlad became a free agent, I told one of my friends that I wouldn't be saddened if Sammy had an "accident" and had to retire so the Cubs could get Vlad. That didn't happen and now he has next to no trade value.

Maddux, Zambrano and Wood make this team a threat in the playoffs. I know Maddux doesn't have a great postseason recod, but he has a pretty good ERA.

I totally agree with KURANT-great points! Nomar is a much better option for the Cubs at SS than A. Gonzo anyday. I still blame Gonzo for Game 6 against the Marlins, not Bartman (and the other "fans" around him). You Red Sox fans did well in this trade by getting O. Cabrera, but the Cubbies would have given up too much in trading for Cabrera alone so that's why this deal was created and I thank Jim Hendry for making it happen. Red Sox fans should realize that this trade was a win-win for everyone and get over it-Nomar is not your problem anymore and the Cubs fans actually like him in Chicago. This is like when you break up with some chick and she was a total bitch to you-hence the falling out, but you are pissed off that she is with someone else and you wish them bad luck despite the fact that you broke up with her because your relationship sucked. Move on with it and leave our Nomar alone!

Now back to baseball....Cubbies have a great chance to make the Wildcard spot as the other teams in contention (Giants, Padres, Astros, Marlins) all play much more difficult schedules than the Cubs who play the Pirates, Mets, and Reds before finally ending the season in Atlanta (who will probably be saving their best pitchers for the playoffs). It is in the Cubs hands to make it happen and I think the pitching is finally coming together as Prior and Wood are starting to show hints of last years domination on the mound and Zambrano is kicking ass in Wrigley. All Cub fans are aware of the bullpen problems and the lack of a real closer, but the team overall has better players than last year (compare last year's players to Derek Lee, Micheal Barrett and a healthy Corey Patterson). I'll be the first to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the Cubs success last season and I look forward to watching them in October this year! And by the way, good luck to the BoSox.

cubs suck! they'll continue to lose forever and their fans are a bunch of dumbasses too...

yoda77 09-26-2004 12:17 AM

Lucky cubs have a soft run to the wild card my GIANTS will either win the div or miss the playoffs , the teams they play dictate how they will finish...no margin for error, the cubs however will get roughed up in the first round by either the braves or the cards, their only hope is if the dodgers make it ....GO GIANTS

dylanmarsh 10-01-2004 02:45 PM

To quote another line from Ferris Bueller, "It's over. Go Home."

I wonder how Nomar is feeling about pouting and wanting out of Boston, now?

ok the cubs may suck and you have a right to that opinion, but to call their fans dumbasses is just plain wrong. What is up with that? Maybe you are a Cardinals fan and that would explain this unintelligent remark. Whatever the case may be, I find it funny that we have resorted to name calling on a thread that was started by cub fan looking to see if more cubs fans are on the TFP.

It sounds like you are still bitter about this Nomar situation. Again, get over it as it was still a win-win for both ballclubs and be grateful that the Red Sox made the playoffs w/o him. I can argue with you all day long about how Nomar had very little to do with the Cubs not making the playoffs as the bullpen was the biggest downfall for the Cubs this year.

I'm not bitter at all. Cabrera, Roberts and Mienkietwicz have been great additions and exactly what the Sox needed. And there's no need to argue something I already agree with you about: Nomar had absolutely no impact on the Cubs not making the playoffs. You're right, too, the Cubs shoulda fixed the bullpen and brought in someone who could bring some spark to the club. I just find it amusing when these primadona athletes, like Nomar, lose sight of the fact that they are in a TEAM sport and yet insist on making everything about them, the individual. Getting rid of Nomar was the best thing the Sox coulda done this year.

Thank you for taking Nomar and saving the Sox season.

You are welcome and I wish the Sox luck in the playoffs. Let's hope the Sox can somehow get past the Yankees as it is getting really old to the rest of the world. Speaking of primadona's, don't you feel that AROD is in that same category? I know he puts up some great numbers and all, but I don't really get the feeling like he is a team player either and he is just out for the money. By the way, I doubt Nomar will stay in Chicago as he is going to want more than $15M that was once offered to him and the Cubs certainly cannot afford that unless by some miracle some AL team picks up Sammy's contract at $18M. If you want to return the favor to the Cubs, pick up Sosa next year as he is really hurting the Cubs in key situations and his contract is disallowing the Cubs from signing up someone that could actually help the team-maybe a Beltran or Abreu. Sammy is another primadona who seems to have a selfish attitude and disrupts the team chemistry/concept.

Konichiwaneko 10-02-2004 12:04 AM

I think you don't need a superstar to win.

dmt767s 10-02-2004 11:11 AM

As a Cubs fan, I cant get used to waiting until October to say "Wait 'til next year"

Zar 10-02-2004 01:07 PM

And the cubs are officially eliminated from the playoffs, losing 7 of their last 8 in the process. What a shocker.

Go Cards!

soccerchamp76 10-02-2004 02:18 PM

Typically, the Cubs choked. There is always next year...

For us, to Round 1 we go.
GO Cards

It is a real shame what is happeneing now that the season has ended. To blame the announcers for speaking the truth shows the real character of this team and its manager. The cubs turned out to be a team that couldn't handle pressure and blame everyone else except themsleves for their mistakes. Also, the way Sosa acted yesterday truly shows his character. Right now, I would take a bag of balls for him becasue he is nothing but a cancer.

Imagine that... a Sox fan mocking the Cubs for choking late in the season.

I'm turning over a new leaf, Mikey. The Patriots and, to a lesser degree, the Yankees, have taught me that arrogance is the key to winning championships. Curt and the boys are going to rip right through the "competition" this playoff year and then Boston will be hated as much as the Yankees for years to come.

Or not...

As a life long Whitesox fan all I can say is this.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Its not as good as the tears of last year in some respects BUT as a total team collapse there can't be many worse.
