yeah, our football team has had some down years lately, and I'm not trying to re-open that can of worms, but did want to brag about the second Baylor track athlete winning the 400 meter in the past 10 years. ESPN.com has an article about how it is weird that he's white.

And that fact seems to be the immediate second comment about his win in all the articles I've seen about him winning it, followed by the fact that he was from the same track program and same coach as Michael Johnson.
I think it's a shame that the fact that he's white is such a big deal, but, frankly, it is so unusual that I don't fault the media for mentioning it.

So, discussion....
Maybe Baylor Athletics don't suck so much
and
Who pays attention to race in sports
or
white guys can run fast?

I think it's hard to argue that Baylor athletics suck, since that school (and that coach) have produced two incredible runners in the past few years.

Funny how the tables have turned. Jesse Owens was the big news in track because he was a great athlete and black. Now, this guy is making headlines because he is a great athlete and white.

It's long been my contention that the only difference between black and white people is the amount of melanin in their skin. The thing is, multiculturalism has taught us that we can dismiss the fact that 90% of CEO's are white as an example of inequity of opportunity. Can we dismiss the fact that most great athletes are black by the same rationale?

Are minorities afforded greater opportunities in the sports world? Do minorities take to sports more than whites because it seems like the only way out of institutionalized poverty? Have whites fallen behind in sports because there are so many other avenues open to them that it doesn't seem worthwhile to train ten hours a day?

I don't have the answers to these questions. I still hold the belief that the primary difference between the "races" is melanin. But in the back of my head I can't quite crush the thought that the kind of differences brought up in this thread are more than just cultural.
