XXVIII Olympiad

I figured the Olympics deserved a thread, so here it is.

Go Michael Phelps, my Baltimorian homie!

Ace_O_Spades 08-13-2004 09:40 PM

Go Perdita Felicien... I think it's time someone who ISNT doping wins a medal in Track events

Fantasma 08-13-2004 10:36 PM

I think Mexico only has chance to get medal in:

- 400 mts women (Ana Guevara) -> Gold
- Men's soccer -> Silver (Argentina gets gold)
- Boxing -> 2 bronze medals
- Diving -> Silver

GO MEXICO!!!

highthief 08-14-2004 05:43 AM

I'm an Olympics junkie. It's on 24 hours a day so I figure I'll get about 4 hours sleep a night.

Gabbyness 08-14-2004 06:07 AM

I'm watching Germany Vs. Cuba Volleyball, and boy, I'm riveted.

crewsor 08-14-2004 07:39 AM

Damn, I gotta turn on the Olympics.

One of the few sports events I watch. Along with Red Sox games and Pats Games.

goddfather40 08-14-2004 09:27 PM

It's kind of Olympics overload right now. To go along with the normal coverage on NBC, there's coverage on CNBC, MSNBC, Bravo, and Telemundo. At one point today I reluctantly admit to watching some preliminary women's table tennis match for a bit.

Omar12 08-14-2004 11:39 PM

I expect a medal in boxing for Puerto Rico...i dont know if any other sport :(

Ace_O_Spades 08-15-2004 07:56 PM

USA Men's Basketball team lost to Peurto Rico by 19

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I hope they dont win a game

Omar12 08-15-2004 08:06 PM

puņeta!!
Go Puerto Rico

it was a complete surprise to all.

Fremen 08-15-2004 08:58 PM

Yup, US Men's Basketball sucks ballz so far.
Iverson, reportedly, doesn't even show up for practice.

In other news, US Women's Softball team kicked Australia's ass today with a 10-0 victory. (sorry, Aussies)

From "The Houston Chronical":
Quote:

SOFTBALL

For the second straight day, the United States softball team played less than seven innings. For the second straight day, the American women showed why they're in a class of their own. Veteran pitcher Lisa Fernandez (1-0) gave up just one hit in five innings, and knocked in three runs at the plate to lead the U.S. to a 10-0 victory over Australia in a game shortened by the Olympic seven-run mercy rule. Stacey Nuveman belted a three-run homer for the Americans, who earned a 7-0 victory over Italy in five innings on Saturday. This one also lasted five innings, and was especially sweet considering the Aussies got the best of the Americans once at the Sydney Games four years ago. The Americans ended up with gold, and are now looking for a third straight Olympic title. They face Japan next on Monday.

I was suprised how well South Africa did in the Men's 4 x 100 Freestyle. While, also, being surprised how poorly Australia did finishing in sixth. I though they would atleast medal.

schUsseln 08-16-2004 12:07 AM

Go US rowing! 2 world records in the big boats - and I know most of em!

Australia's team wasn't as good/strong as last time, so it was expected that they'd weren't going to be as good. I am glad SA won though, and that the US didn't win :D

Australia have been going great so far. With a population of about 20 million, we're second on the list (by gold) and have equal amount of medals :)
- although swimming is probably our best event(s), so later on we'll probbaly slow down a bit. Anyway, i am hooked, watching all kinds of nonsensical events and always going for the underdog or the Australian :D

Dangit, the Canadians also beat the world record, but were still second in their heat to the US. Unbelievable standard of competition this year, can't wait to watch more!

ShaniFaye 08-16-2004 03:20 AM

I admit Im a junkie too....yesterday I watched the table tennis, the womens softball, the swimming, rowing and gymnastics, ordinarily the only thing I watch is gymnastics....Man that game between the womens US and Australia softball teams was awesome!!!

Gabbyness 08-16-2004 04:27 AM

Nothing like international butt shots. Go get em swimmers!

Almo 08-16-2004 10:13 AM

For some reason this years Olympics doesn't interest me much. I guess I prefer the winter Olympics.

Kodega 08-16-2004 10:35 AM

Men team gymnastics final is on tonight (If I read the schedule right). My prediction is that China will win gold. Japan will win Silver and either Romania or USA will win bronze.

Strange Famous 08-16-2004 11:16 AM

I'm enjoying it so far, even though the only medal UK has got is for "syncronised diving" - Phelps vs Thorpe was pretty good. Paula Radcliffe has a good chance at the women's marathon, and we should pick up some medals in the sailing and rowing...

Kodega 08-16-2004 01:18 PM

Just finished watching the Men's 3m synch final and I have to say it was more exciting than I thought it would be. In the third round America managed to pull from 7th place to 2nd, but all the action happened on the final dives. One of the divers on the Chinese team (who had a commanding lead toward gold) failed his dive dropping China out of gold contention. Then one guy on the Russian team hit his feet on the diving board. Greece came out and did a great diving putting them into first. Then the American team was up. All they needed to beat Greece was 8.0 and 8.5's, but they messed up their dives bad, under-rotating and making huge splashes, and ended up in 5th. Leaving Greece to win the gold.

bundy 08-16-2004 02:16 PM

i'm so stoked by my timing.
i wanted to watch the mens 200m freestyle final, which had Thorpe, Hackett, Van Den Hoogenband (sp?) and Phelps in it... but it was on at 2.43am this morning...

so what does my weirdo body do? it wakes me up at exactly 2.43am this morning.
watched the race. and what a frigging awesome race.

GO THORPIE!!! just too strong.

he's now the greatest olympian Australia has ever produced or something like that.

and go Japan... atm coming 3rd in the overall medal tally!!

slimshaydee 08-16-2004 03:18 PM

Thorpie must have very wide gear ratios. It takes him a long time to hit top gear then he just burns the rest of the field. Go thorpie in the 100 tonight!

almostaugust 08-17-2004 01:56 AM

Been pretty entertaining so far. The aussies are kicking some arse in the pool. There has also been some great boxing aswell.

Heh, that's why it's good to be in Perth, cause it's only 12:43 for us :p

Womens 100m and womens 200 m breaststroke tonight - should go nicely in both :D

Porkchop 08-19-2004 03:35 PM

Funny i usually love the olympics, but this time havent really watched any of it. Still track and field starts tomorrow.

canuckguy 08-19-2004 03:45 PM

ah yes track and field soon, always my fav. the swimming this year as been awesome watching the thorpedo and phelps go for golds. baseball has been nice to see, love seeing the different arm angles of the japanese teams.

Kurant 08-20-2004 06:28 PM

Misty May is hot.

That is all.

Ace_O_Spades 08-21-2004 03:36 PM

aaaaaand the usa mens basketball team loses again

horray!

Go_AVS 08-21-2004 08:44 PM

I think I was going to say something about the Olympics until I saw that Brazilian ass and now I am speechless....

Ella 08-22-2004 12:41 AM

Way to go Grant Hackett....he took the 1500m for the second Olympics in a row, and broke Keiren Perkins' Olympic record. Perkins won the event for two Olympics running too, so now Aussies have dominated long distance swimming for four Olympics!

Look forward to Jana Pittman winning her hurdles run - that chick has been through hell to be there.

robert m 08-22-2004 07:04 PM

i think gail devers is faking it ,i think she`s just too old ..

Average_Joe 08-26-2004 10:23 AM

US hoops just beat Spain to advance to the medal round. This never should have been in question, but for now, they seemed to have saved themselves from some embarrassment.

Lunchbox7 08-26-2004 11:33 PM

Did any of you see the bronze medal boxing match between Australia and Egypt (I think). The ozzie was kicking arse but everytime he hit the egyption the egyption got the point. So the ozzie lost like 24 points to 8. The crowd as well as the commentators were all booing the scorers because it was sooooo dodgy. If you hit the other guy then your meant to get the point. Not the other way around.
