BOSTON (AP) -- The Los Angeles Lakers resumed their makeover Friday by trading Gary Payton and Rick Fox to the Boston Celtics for Chucky Atkins, Marcus Banks and Chris Mihm.

The Celtics also received a conditional first-round draft pick and cash in the deal and sent a second-round pick to the Western Conference champions.

The teams were once among the NBA's fiercest rivals, but Boston has fallen on hard times since winning its 16th championship in 1986. Since then, the Lakers have won five titles and lost three times in the Finals, including this year's upset by the Detroit Pistons.

The Lakers then traded Shaquille O'Neal to Miami and replaced coach Phil Jackson with Rudy Tomjanovich. Derek Fisher left for Golden State and Vlade Divac, Los Angeles' center from the early '90s, was brought back for another stint.

Payton and Karl Malone took a large pay cut to join the Lakers as free agents last summer, each All-Star hoping to win their first championship.

Despite struggling through his first year with the team, the 36-year-old Payton exercised a $5.4 million option to come back for another season.

A nine-time All-Star who averaged 18.3 points per game over his first 13 seasons, Payton averaged 14.6 points -- his lowest since the 1992-93 season -- and a career-low 4.2 assists in the regular season last year. He averaged 7.8 points and 5.3 assists in the playoffs.

What.

Although I suppose this move kinda makes sense... dump the old PG for some new talent. But IMO they would have been a lot better off if they re-signed Fisher.

Let's see how the season turns out.

dylanmarsh 08-06-2004 01:22 PM

Christ.

I can dig the Glove coming to Boston; I just wish it had happened back in the days of 'Toine and Pierce in the Eastern Conference Finals. 36 years old and still playing in the NBA.

I've really enjoyed hating Rick Fox all these years since he left Boston and now I have to embrace him? Man, this just sucks. It's like having an old girlfriend come back whom you never really liked and couldn't wait to get rid of. This is the last image I wanted to see again in my lifetime:

I was wondering how well Bill would take it :D

I can't wait....Rick Fox and Johnny Damon in an old fashioned Beantown hair-off!!!!

Seriously though, GP was going to have another off year in LA anyways, why not get rid of some of these older guys and get younger. Please god don't let Chris Mihm be Travis Knight.

Cowman 08-06-2004 06:11 PM

I don't see why the celtics made this trade..losing Atkins hurts, and getting GP and Fox in return? I love Rick Fox, great guy, but his age/injuries have caught up to him, same goes for GP...I just don't see what they're getting out of this.

I am not trying to get a higher post count. Even though that average includes time when I didn't visit the boards, now that I am active again, I still barely post.

Look back on my whoping 62 previous posts if you would like, nothing there will indicate a desire for a higher post count as you indicated.

I'm sure Hal didn't mean to direct that at you specifically, but a good deal of people have just been posting stuff exactly like that recently and it starts getting on peoples nerves.

Kurant 08-06-2004 09:54 PM

Personally I think Boston knows they can't get there. Fox is pretty cheap. Payton only has 1 year left under contract. If it's for Salary cap reasons, it's smart.

Other then that, why the hell else would they want a guy on his downside, and a guy who's been injuried for close to a year.

atkins sux on D and has a $8.7M salary - hurts on the cap...

this is salary dump...

payton's not happy with the trade so the celtics could wind up with his salary of $5.4M and not him and if fox retires they can gain $10M in savings

1) Has Payton ever been happy playing in the NBA?

2) I will be praying tonight, not for my loved ones overseas, but that Rick Fox will retire, become hideously ugly like Tom Cruise in "Vanilla Sky", and never set foot in the great state of Massachusetts.

dtheriault 08-07-2004 11:02 PM

I think it's a good trade for both teams.

Rudy is going to need guys who can play tenacious d for the entire game, plus they're going to run. The lakers get some young fresh legs and a backup for Vlade.

Rick fox will retire. Why leave LA and his great career pimping ford trucks and his amazing surfing talents. So boston gets to dump 5 mil. there. I think that gp can still average 12-16 and 5-7 assists a game and if not he'll retire at the end of the season. plus the celtics are picking up a conditional first round pick that could be in the early teens if the lakers end up sucking next year.

Good for both teams.

This is the big unknown in the trade, especially if the Lakers, god forbid, do not make the playoffs for a couple years. They could lose a high pick in 2006 potentially.

redcigar 08-09-2004 03:08 AM

I hope Payton will play for the Celtics. If not there even more screwed.............Good move by Ainge to free up all the dough. Gotta hope Fox retires b/f the season. 3 All Stars in the Starting Lineup now
