Sad story. I can't cut and paste on this work machine, as it screws up everytime. But none the less, this is terrible.

Yanks' star to be tested for potentially fatal condition

New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi is to undergo tests for a potentially fatal condition sometimes caused by intestinal parasites and he could miss the rest of the season, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Giambi missed Sunday night's 9-6 Red Sox victory over the Yankees. It was the 12th start Giambi has missed, mostly due to an intestinal parasite, which has caused him to struggle to find energy at the plate.
The five-time All-Star has already undergone several tests and the Star-Ledger has reported Giambi will be tested for a parasite called entamoeba histolytica, which can cause a potentially fatal condition called amebiasis.

Apparently, the parasite can be transmitted in a number of ways, including through water and food. And it essentially can embed in the intestinal lining, and can only be detected through very specific tests.

Giambi is expected to be with the team in Toronto on Monday, and then he will fly to New York on Tuesday to meet with an infectious disease specialist.

The slugger is mired in an 0-for-19 slump at the plate and has been replaced by veteran Tony Clark at first base.
As much as I can't stand Giambi, I hope he'll be alright...

It might explain why he lost soooo much weight before the season. Too bad, hope he gets better.

Despite the hate between team fans, individual players in baseball are respectable people. They are brothers on their team and they look out for players on the other team if they get hurt. That said, despite my utter dislike for the Yankees, I cant help but root for Jason to get through this.

Report: Yankee to see another specialist

Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi is undergoing tests for a potentially fatal condition sometimes caused by intestinal parasites, his personal trainer told the Newark Star Ledger.

"He told me, 'I don't care about even hitting .220. I just want to feel better,' " Bob Alejo told the newspaper for a story published in Monday's editions. "He's exhausted, and it's not getting any better."

Giambi is being tested for a parasite called entamoeba histolytica, Alejo said, which can cause a potentially fatal condition called amebiasis. The parasite can be transmitted through water and food, among other ways, and it can embed itself in the intestinal lining, making it undetectable except by very specific tests, according to the Star Ledger's report.

Giambi has been tested for cancer and HIV in the last week. Both tests came back negative.

Giambi is scheduled to see another infectious disease specialist on Monday and will undergo specific tests for E. Histolytica, the newspaper reported. The results of those tests will determine whether the Yankees decide to put Giambi on the disabled list again.

There is concern that Giambi, who has missed 13 starts this season, might have to sit out the remainder of the season to rest. He's sat out four of New York's last five games; Giambi started at first base Friday in Boston but skipped the remaining two games of the series. He is hitless in his last 19 at-bats.

The Yankees won't skip a beat... after acquiring Randy Johnson they'll go out and buy the Phillies so they can have Thome replace him at first....

I highly doubt the spanks will get Randy Johnson. Their minor leaguers are worthless.

It would seem that the MFYs are running into a bit of baseball karma. Giambi with parasites, RJ not being able to go to NYC due to the MFYs' minor league system, and the $60M starting rotation sitting on the bench. I'd love to see this version of the MFYs in the playoffs against the Red Sox and watch Pedro and Curt shut them down.

I know my view isn't popular but I could care less about him. He's a druggy and he cheats on his wife... I have no respect for that. He's not going to die, he'll just miss some baseball for a while... no big deal.

It will just give the Yankees something to rally around to beat any and all comers. Their lineup will make it without him. Sheff, Jeter, A-Rod and Posada have more than enough in the tank to pick up the slack not to mention Matsui and the others.

Their rotation will be fine too. They have 6 decent guys and they will all be back in October after they win the division by trotting out a series of hacks to take turns before Brown and Moose are back.

I hope Giambi will be fine, but I am afraid about the rumors that will start now. He does not need any help at this point between steriods, this health problem and anything else that someone infers from the discription on the CDC website.

Supposedly the DBacks and Dodgers had a deal for RJ in place. RJ for Mota and Werth plus pitching prospects Chad Billingsley (A ball) and Chuck Tiffany (A ball). They also had a variation that would have sent Lo Duca to AZ also. In the end, RJ wouldn't lift his no trade clause.

This would have been a pretty good deal for AZ. Lo Duca may be playing way over his head but a catcher who can it is a great thing to have. Billingsley is lighting it up in the minors.

If RJ only wants to go to the Yanks, he'll remain a DBack.

The DBacks are also talking to the Dodgers about Finley. Fins said he'll only go if he gets to remain a CF and I'm not sure is psycho boy Bradley would be happy about that.

Lo Duca falls apart in the second half.
