Wimbledon- Hantuchova v Sharapova (Think Anna++)
Most of the world doesn't realize this so I thought it's rather important to point out that two of the hottest tennis players on the planet just played each other in the third round of Wimbledon. Sharapova handily defeated Hantuchova 6-3, 6-1. I don't have cable but that match certainly would have been pay-per-view worthy.
Daniela Hantuchova is from Slovakia and was and at one point achieved a worldwide #5 ranking and made four consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinals (Anna never had back-to-back QF appearances). Maria Sharapova is from Russia and ranked 15th in the world and seeded 12th at Wimbledon. She has already won three WTA titles in the two years she has been pro, compared to Anna's zero after 6+ years. Sharapova will face #31 Amy Frazier (USA) in the fourth round, coming up on Monday or Tuesday. Be sure to cheer for her. Judging from those pictures, I'll take Hantuchova.

One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman walked into a pub together. They each bought a pint of Guinness. Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!" |

Damn I had heard a lot of talk about Sharapova being an "Anna who can play," but in these pictures Hantuchova looks like the better looking of the two.
Great players too.

Best wishes to Maria during her Wimbledon FINALS match against #1 seed Serena Williams!! Lindsay Davenport was Sharapova's latest victim, 6-2, 6-7(5), 1-6.

Am I the only person here who loves Maria's game and is not just thinking of how she looks?

She won fricken wimbeldon, of course everyone with any knowledge in tennis does. It is just the fact that rarely anyone woke up early enough to watch it. I for one think she is amazing. She hit's the hell out of the ball, she is not afraid to challenge even the hardest hitting player (serena) to a slug fest. She can get over her mistakes, and not make them twice. She mixes up her serves, and she has a great lob volley. Sorry I didn't post in your thread you made about her... Edit: Did I mention she is hot? |

I'll admit when I started this thread I had never seen Sharapova play before. I figured if she made the QF at Rolland Garros she was decent. I first saw her play against Davenport in the SF and her game is as impressive as her appearance. Rallying from being down a set and a few games to defeat a former champion was impressive. The aspect of Maria's game that amazes me most is her ability to return with authority and put the server on the defensive. I taped the Wimbledon finals and Maria's explosive start amazed me. She was not intimated at all by Williams and showed it by breaking her on consecutive serves. I have no doubt of the validity of "many more Grand Slam finals" Maria referenced in her acceptance speech.
And I suppose she is somewhat attractive.
