Will Vlad Guerrero be the MVP?

When ARod went to the Yanks the writers were getting ready to send in their ballots for MVP before the season even began. They forgot about the Impaler though. He's always hit for a better average than ARod, collected more RBI, stole more bases, and had higher OBP. The only thing ARod has is about 7 more HR per season.

I'm so glad that he's in the AL now. I hated when we had to face the Expos. He's one of the best bad ball hitter hitters I've ever seen. I remember last year when he took a pitch about 2 inches off the ground from BK and hit it into the seats.

Baseball prospectus had picks for this year. 7 of 13 chose ARod for MVP. 1 picked Vlad.

No he will not.
Yes he had 9 RBI in one night. One night does not make a season.

How about my birdies Scott Rolen? GG defense and league leader in RBI? Nobody can beat his defense and he is having his best offensive year ever.

It doesn't take "one night" to be a triple crown candidate. Vlad is 4th in BA, 2nd in HR, and 1st in RBI. Vlad is tied for the league lead in outfield assists, including a gunning a potential game winning run by the Yankees in the 9th inning about 10 days ago. He has carried the Angels through the onslaught of injuries into a solid first place standing. He is the MVP right now, and should be in running at season's end.

Yes, and Scott Rolen is having a fantastic year and deserves a ton of credit for having the Cards a game out in the Central.

bellzboy 06-06-2004 06:24 PM

Vlad should be a contender for it, he's having a great year. Scott Rolen should be considered in the NL, he's an RBI machine, and I could watch him play defense all day.

jasonresno 06-07-2004 09:04 AM

Alright I hate the Cardinals, I'm a Yank BTW, but even I have to admit that if Rolen keeps up like this..he should get it IF he keeps up like this.

kutulu 06-07-2004 09:33 AM

Ahh the NL MVP award is a fucking joke. They'll give it to Barroids like always. Pujols should have won it last year and he got fucked. It'll be the same shit this year as it was last year.

As for other actual MVP candidates, Rolen is amazing this year, but what about Sean Casey right now?

perripken 06-07-2004 01:05 PM

Vlad is a friggin stud and should get it...man I wish the Orioles had landed him!

cameroncrazy822 06-09-2004 04:20 AM

If he keeps pace the rest of the year I thik he is a prohibitive favorite if not the front runner... we'll see.

bellzboy 06-09-2004 09:18 PM

I had forgotten Casey, if he keeps hitting .380, he has to be considered too. He hasn't been the RBI machine Rolen has, though. Rolens on pace for like 170 RBI. And Rolens got a huge edge in defense.

Bobaphat 06-09-2004 10:05 PM

Vlad is definately in the running for MVP at this time. There is nobody else in the AL that is close. He has kept his team contention all season even with while half the starting line-up is on the DL. His number are rediculous. I can think of anyone else in the AL that deserves it right now with the possible exception of Manny. The season is young yet though so it is way too early to even speculate.

soccerchamp76 06-11-2004 04:58 PM

I do not know how stupid I was when I made that post.
I guess I just sorta forgot that Vlad got traded.

Roidy should not be given the MVP.
Pujols got robbed and if Rolen keeps up this pace and loses it to the loser Barry, I will be pissed.

AL9045 06-13-2004 09:53 AM

There are lots of players up for contention right now.

The playoff factor is there as well, so we have to wait until it becomes crunch time in September to see who the real contenders are.

Cross-Over 06-13-2004 03:33 PM

People previously listed his stats, the fact that his team is contending, and he plays equally well defensively.

So I think the obvious answer is, right now, he is MVP. If he and the Angels continue on their pace, he'll most likely win it.

I wish he would have been more open about his intentions this past off season. All analysts, as well as the O's, thought he would sign in Baltimore, but he quickly accepted what would have been less money (the O's were willing to go a little bit higher) without even wanting to negotiate any further. I don't blame him at all, just dissappointed for the O's.

dylanmarsh 06-13-2004 04:41 PM

Let's talk about this in three months. Vlad has been solid, yes. Arod has come around. But to talk about MVP in the second week of June is a bit ridiculous, IMO.

kutulu 06-14-2004 12:14 PM

Personally I think he went with the Angels because he knew that Baltimore has no shot at contending at any time during the lifespan of his intended contract. It's not a shot at the O's but realistically with the Yanks and the Sox and their current state of pitching could you really see them doing anything?

Moreno (sp?) wanted to buy the DBacks after they won the World Series. Now that Jerry Collangelo is selling is part of the team I wish Moreno could have been the one to buy the team.

I think Vlad is a legitimate MVP candidate. I think the only other real contender is Pudge Rodriguez with Detroit. Although he is not a favorite of mine, just look what he is doing for that team. They have completely turned around from last season's nightmare, he is leading the league in batting, and he has that pitching staff playing way over their heads. I hate to even say this stuff, cuz I'm a huge Angels fan,. Pudge and Vlad are the top two contenders in my mind.

thephuse 07-02-2004 06:41 AM

Vlad is having an amazing year, but even as a Yankee fan, Manny Ramirez is having another incredible year, with no protection whatsoever early in the year... Nomar and Trot were out, with only Ortiz in the lineup, now he's leading in HR's and batting something around .350

IT's be a close one so far.. lets see if they can keep it up

It says a lot about his leadership skills and catching ability. I'm thinking Buck Showalter, Alan Trammel or Lou Pinella will be manager of the year this season.

Between the three of them, Buck is probably the most likely to win it. In two seasons they lose the best catcher in the game and then the best player in the game. They only went from last place to first place. He also picked up one of the worst hitting catchers in baseball (Rod Barajas) and he's currently one of the best. I think Barajas has a lot to do with the pitchers improving. He's always been an amazing defensive catcher but he could never hit. I doubt he'll still be hitting at the end of the year but he'll still be a great catcher.
