Records that will never be broken

I started this thread in the the old TFP, looking for some fresh ideas now.

Some easy baseball ones...

Cy Young, 511 career wins.
Rickey Henderson, 1403 career stolen bases.
Cal Ripken Jr, 2632 consecutive games played.
Nolan Ryan, 7 no-hitters. Hideo Nomo is the only active pitcher with more than one. He has two.)
Connie Mack, 7755 games managed (Tony LaRussa is the highest active manager... he's not even halfway there.)

and...

1971 Baltimore Orioles... 4 pitchers with 20 wins, although the Yanks might have a shot at it this year!

Unless drastic rule changes take place:

Wayne Gretzky's 92 goals in '81-'82,
215 points in '85'-'86, and career numbers of 894 goals, 1963 assists, and 2857 total points. Someone will have to come along who will average about 45 goals a year for 20 years to break to goal record.

In the NBA, Wilt's 50.4 ppg in '61-'62 is untouchable, though I think his 100 points in a single game can be broken.

Nah, 100 points in a game will never be broken. The closest I can remember was David Robinson scoring 72 a couple years ago against the clippers. That's still not 3/4's the way there.

i agree. reaching the century mark in the nba is absolutely unheard of now. even with the greediness of kobe bryant on the court, i doubt it will ever happen. if it does, think about the publicity. it will be either praised for breaking the record, or looked down upon on being the most selfish play in history.

Of them all, I think the fastest 3 goals (hat trick) will be the most impossible to break. Goalies and players are too well coached and trained these days for that to happen.

if anyone stands a chance of breaking Wilt's 100 pts in a game it has to Iverson b/c of the # of shots he throws up in some games. of course he'd have to nail all of those shots and that in itself would be a record....

i agree with username. John Stocktons 15K assists will never be broken. nobody will ever even come close. i mean, the second highest assist leader is marc jackson i think, and he barely has 10K assists.

with expansion teams in baseball the pitching has become so diluted it's worse than a watered down drink...
with so many pitchers now and a 5 game rotation you won't see anyone come close to Denny McLain's 31 wins in 68 - he only lost 6 - striking out 280 and walking only 63...
only the Strawman will come close to the number of years behind the wall

If you'd asked me this question 10 years ago, I would have said Roger Maris' 61 season HRs.

But now I'll say Hank Aaron's 755 career round-trippers. No one will get close. They'll all retire early.

Barry has an outside chance, but he will have to play an honest 3-4 more years, Griffey is hurt too much, A-Rod has a chance but has to stay healthy

Yup...was just gonna mention Richard Petty's 200 wins. I do also believe that it's going to be hard to beat Petty and Earnhardt for more than seven championships. Jeff Gordon stands the best chance for that...the guy is good, so time will tell.

Cy Young is the 1 record in sports that is absolutley impossible to break in today's game. 3 man rotations, sometimes starting twice in 4 days when he got his 511 wins.

It just can't be done. Guys only get 33-40 starts a season, they'd have to win 20 games a year for 25 years. Unless 3 man rotations come back, this record will never be broken.

i really believe that unless something drastic happens, a rod will break the career home run record. And I know it is still waaaay to soon to say, but look at Albert Pujols' first two seasons. Keep that up and he'll have the record.

I was going to say the same!! This record above all else in world sport is the most unlikely ever to be beaten. No one will get within a bull's roar of it. An absolute freak of nature and a national treasure.

I can think of a few that weren't mentioned:

Mario Mendoza - Number of sub 200 seasons, these days, you'd be out of baseball after one, he had six or seven.

Johnny Vander Meer - Two consecutive no hitters

Anthony Young - 26 consecutive losses - for the same reason Mendoza's record won't be broken

Rickey Henderson - 120 SB in a season

going back to the wilt chamberlain record.

he did that in a time when there was no 3 second rule. he camped out under his basket. i don't even think he went back on defense. they just lobbed him the ball across the court whenever the other team scored or didn't score. i honestly do not give much credence to wilt's records in comparison to today's game because of the differences in the game itself. With rule changes, it makes it impossible to compare 2 completely different eras in basketball.

A record that has been tied a few times, but never will be broken is hitting the first pitch of the baseball season for a Home Run. The last I can Remember was Dwight Evans hitting on off Jack Morris of Detroit many years ago.

heh, I remember that being a big Evans fan. I'm not sure if this is really a record though, it's not something that can be broken unless maybe the first 2 pitches are hit out by the first 2 batters.

Its a shame Randy Moss doesn't have the right attitude. He could have a shot if he had the right attitude. Alas, he's got a terrible attitude and he'll never stay in the league long enough or try hard enough.

YEah some of these guys get close to big records, like Seattle in season wins a couple years ago, and Giguere's playoff shutout streak, but in the end they all fail. Except the home run record but these days I'd almost put an asterix by it with Coors Field, crappy pitching, etc.
