R.I.P. "Around the Horn"
I always liked this show on ESPN, but apparently the network is pulling the plug. I liked the original host better than the guy they've had recently, but I thought it was a good show....maybe the problem was that PTI is more popular, and with the shows airing back to back, you basically got opinions on the same set of topics twice in a row.

While I like PTI much more, I also enjoyed ATH. I think they gimmicked it out a little too much. if it had just been a tech version of Sports Reporters with younger columnists it would have been OK

I appreciate Stat Boy's quick rise to a host role, but I think they should have put someone else in his place after Kellerman left.
They key to the success of Sports Reporters and PTI is the people. Wilbon, Kornheiser, Ryan, Lupica.....people tune in to see them. I never felt the need to rush home to see what Adande or Holley or Pearce had to say. I love sports roundtable discussions, but they just didn't have the right people sitting at the table. Mariotti and Paige kept it interesting....but I won't miss it.

I liked around the horn and was surprised when stat boy took over for max kellerman, however when i watched it, the show was still good. Oh well, PTI is still the better of the two shows...

I'm not a fan of Around the Horn. I only enjoyed watching it when Stat Boy started hosting. That's only cause I've got a crush on him
Seems it was an April Fools joke though...

They even referenced to the joke on the second saying it was just a joke.

Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!" |

I dunno, I mean Mariotti missed Friday's show, and they were so unprepared they only had three writers on

If it makes it through the summer, I will be amazed.
Stat boy sucks as the host. He cannot keep control of the show and every now and then just gives people 5 point bonuses. The loss of the disembodied voice really didn't help either. I don't want to hear Stat Boy yell "Show em my motto" at the commercial break... If they want to save the show, they need to do a few things I think. 1. New host. Stat boy can't hold his own 2. Get a new disemodied voice. 3. Get interesting columnists on the show! Bill Plaschke is NOT interesting. Dan Lebetard, Bob Ryan, and maybe even someone off the wall like Bob Kravitz are interesting. 4. Keep Marrioti and Paige off a while. I think they are both interesting, but my god, they hardly ever take a break off. Adam Schefler (spelling?) was a very interesting and witty stand-in for Paige. Keep him on for a while. We'll see I guess...

I think a better rotation would be nice. Marriotti and Paige are fantastic on the show, but I like Schefler too. The thing I really find appealing about the show is the exposure for otherwise unknown columnists like Michael Holley, who is great on there.
Get a few other guys like Jason Whitlock and maybe even Mike Lupica on occasion (especially opposite Bob Ryan) and I think it will be better. Maybe get Zach from Dream Job to host it. I think he would be perfect (especially since Woody would consitantly comment on his hair ).

BTW what happened to Kellerman.
I think they need to rotate people also. I am tired of Jay and Woody. Stat is to stiff for the job. They talk out of there ass so much and they guys are supposed to be professional. They need to get 4 fat guys from cities around the country to talk sports. Art |

Kellerman went to Fox Sports when him and ESPN couldn't reach a contract. He took the disembodied voice with him. He has a new show that will be coming on the network in the next month or so.

I agree with a lot of what has been said. They need to get more columnists from more newspapers to draw in more fans. They ignore columnists from a lot of the major markets, when there is no need to do so. They should place a one or two show limit per week to ensure this. A lot of the time they will discuss an issue across multiple days, and right now all you get to hear are the same people's opinion on the same issue.
That being said, I like this show a lot, even more so then PTI. I hope that they figure out a way to make it work in the post-kellerman era. |

haha, yeah I figured most people would think that. I guess that even though the variety is limited on ATH it is better the PTI. I also don't like how both Tony and Wilbon treat hockey as if it doesn't exist. Tony goes over the top way too much as well. It seems he cares more about making a big production out of everything and not enough about the sports and the issues.

If PTI would keep away from fags like Dan Tard, I would be much happier.
I like when David Aldridge fills in and Bob Ryan. I could do without the other yahoos. I also really dislike the guy from the west coast that they get to fill in sometimes. I miss Kellerman. I only disliked him dissing hockey but even though I love golf...it is not a real sport. They want to make it more of a real sport. The golfers should have to carry there own bags. Art |
