Skins reach deal with Brunell
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1739475
7 years, $43M with an $8.6M signing bonus. Wow, this could be the worst signing in NFL history. The Skins don't need a QB, and Brunell is not worth anywhere near that amount. The cap hit when they cut him in two years is going to huge. Jags get a third round pick. |

The thing is, as far as I can guess, it's done this way to count less against the cap.

Brunell will never see the last four years of the deal which probably greatly inflate the value. Regardless that bonus will get accounted for eventually.
Now they have to trade Ramsey - other teams can play hardball and only offer a 2nd round pick. |

Why were/are they so keen on Brunell ? He's had some shocking seasons, played ok last year, then went down injured to be replaced by a rookie.
How is this guy supposed to revive the 'Skins ?

a move that makes 0 sense to me as well, bitching and whining about Champ Bailey yet they go blow money on Brunell with Ramsey playing his ass off last year with virtually no protection from either his RB's or his O-Line, why in the hell would Snyder do something like this?
Oh, wait this is the same guy who signed every FA in the over the hill gang a few years vback when he took over the team. I know Gibbs was/is high on Mark but the move still makes no sense, give Ramsey a better line and a decent RB (yeah Stephen Daivs looking pretty good right about now huh coach visor) and he would smash any chance of Brunell being the starter this year. best wishes to Ramsey and hope he gets the hell outta Washington soon.

I have to agree. After the season that Ramsey had last year, with little or no protection, I didn't think QB was even on their list of problem areas, much less their first deal. It is a shame to not see Ramsey get a chance to continue to grow. I alsso thought Brunell would end up in Dallas. Go figure.

To me, Brunel is a definite upgrade at that position, but I think the Redskins had greater needs - I would be pretty pissed off if I was a fan if they let Champ Baily go at the same time as this.

The only way he's an upgrade is because he was a more mobile QB then Ramsey is, and with his age and the fact he was hurt most of last year that difference is going to drop dramatically, especially when compared to a situation with Ramsey, a decent O-line, and a decent running back.
Even without the contract, it is a truely stupid move, especially when a guy like Kurt Warner, or if the rumors are true Jeff Garcia, could be availible on the market. Even signing Anthony Wright to compete for the job would be a better move; at least he's truely mobile and willing to be a backup.

I'm guessing the reasoning behind this is to have Brunell act as a mentor to Ramsey.
I think the thing that will help the Skins the most next season is picking up Greg Blache as defensive coordinator.
