Ron Artest of the Pacers will have surgery Thursday for a ligament tear in his left thumb and will be out indefinitely, the team announced.

Artest first hurt the thumb on his non-shooting hand during a game against the Nets on Jan. 17, when it was diagnosed as a sprain. He aggravated the injury when he fell in the third quarter of Tuesday night's loss to the Hornets.

Artest, who did not start Tuesday because he was late returning from the All-Star weekend in Los Angeles, clutched his thumb during several possessions and shot 1-for-10 for the game. He made 11 of 13 free throws and finished with 13 points.

He did not speak with reporters after the game.

Artest missed the workout before the game because he did not return in time from Los Angeles. He was not on the flight that was originally scheduled for him and had to take a later flight.

i wonder how long he'll be out

MontanaXVI 02-19-2004 02:09 PM

welp who will win the east now?

Mojo_PeiPei 02-19-2004 02:30 PM

Artest could still be back before the end of the season intime for the playoffs. Al Harrington will step in and get more minutes and he has carried the load when Artest has been out in the past. Although you gotta love that Sheed went to the pistons today.

Wow that didnt take long for the Pistons to get that other Wallace guy. Very interesting, everyone knows Rasheeds rap...super talented, super flaky. If he decides he wants to fit in Detroit, Ill put the Pistons up against anyone in the East now. They got the D, now they may have the O. I liked Sura and am sorry to see him go, but you gotta love the potential Rasheed brings.

Oh, and bye bye Indiana.

The Pistons and the Nets are the teams to watch in the East.

Well, with the recent R. Wallace signing the pistons are going to be the team to beat in the east. I think that wallace is just what the pistons needed.. a consistent scorer and a presence in the paint... the only question is... will he be on his best behavior?

Your crazy, the Pacers defensively will feel the pinch of Artest being gone but he isn't gone for the season. They have the Sixth Man of the Year in Harrington and if Croshere gets some more PT (which he will) the points will come. There isn't a doubt in my mind that the Pistons will be a better team now but Rasheed needs to make sure he isn't a distraction (shit he will probably only play this year in Detroit and then move on). I don't think Larry Brown is in the mood for another AI that he has in Rasheed.

Both teams are back six games in the playoff race and NJ is going to cool off soon. I seriously don't expect to see Carlsie letting his team go down the gutter like that piece of shit Isiah did last year (sorry NY fans but your stuck with a proven loser).

You might be right...

The more I think about it, the more Im thinking this might blow up in Dumars face. The Pistons are all about hard work and teamwork, and their team leader (B. Wallace) is a quiet, hard working guy who leads by example. Knowing that R. Wallace wanted to go to NY in the first place might be the problem. Just thinking about what a tempermental prima donna R. Wallace is and looking at the type of team (and city) Detroit is, Dumars might want to start loooking to see who he wants in trade for Wallace from the Knicks. He might be a better fit for that team and in that market (a la Sprewell).

Great game tonight at Detroit vs. Minnesota...

Ron Artest, and Rick Carlisle's ability to keep him focused, has been the difference in the Pacers this year. If the hand doesn't heal real quick, Indy is in trouble. Harrington is not going to be able to fill the void night after night.

The Pistons and Nets are going to push them for best record in the east.

Bigt6909 02-20-2004 10:19 AM

I agree that indy is good, but not only was artest good on defense he put up points... I dont think that harrington will be able to come up big on both sides of the ball. As for the Detriot and Wallace trade, we'll only know after seeing a few games. I hope that he is on his best behavior and that he isn't a distraction. I have a feeling that they (the pistons) are going to come out on top in the east.

whoizzy 02-25-2004 09:16 PM

I think the Pacers still gotta chance to make a factor in the playoffs, plus Ron Artest is one of the toughest players in the league.

Mojo_PeiPei 02-25-2004 09:49 PM

Ron Artest is still practicing and I bet he will be out (at most) 4-6 weeks, just in time to get back to the playoffs. Seeing as to the bottom 3 teams in the East are all below .500, I'd say Indiana is guarenteed a first round victory.

dragon2fire 03-04-2004 10:02 AM

... litsten very carefully form a hoosier

if indy has the best recornd in the east witech it looks like they will there is no question that the best team is indiana

you have no clue the six man they have in us fans

looking foward to buying some play off tickets

Mojo_PeiPei 03-04-2004 01:31 PM

Artest is back in less then two weeks, his second game back he dropped 25 points. Indiana is going no where.

ReggErving 03-04-2004 10:18 PM

And we are still rolling after this debate. Artest came back and we are winning, sorry NJ fans and Detriot fans, the Pacers are the best in the East right now.

Not only are they the best int he East but they can compete with the best in the NBA, although i will give respect to Timberwolves what they respect, if Pacers pull out the best recoerd thwy will win the Finals.
