Do you believe in Miracles!?

well, i just saw Miracle, and i am just awestruct. i wish i would have been alive to see it. the movie is excellent, best movie that has come out in a long time. it is kind of that "rocky" type "makes you feel good" kind of movie. but as a sports fan and especially a hockey fan, the scenes of the games are excellent. especially the game against the russians. i highly recommend it. infact i do not recommend it, i demand that you go see it.

Maybe in 20 years Canada can make a movie about Canada whooping the USA's ass in the gold medal game for their first gold in 50 years...

I agree with ledhead! The movie is great. A++++! Great performances, great action, great story. I am not a big hockey fan and I really liked it a lot. My wife even liked it!

Can't stand the miracle on ice.. wow so you beat the USSR (minus Tretiak.. but that's another story) and then Finland to get the gold.

Once. (Yes I'm aware of 1960, but for all intents and purposes..).

Honestly, its a game so upsets can happen. But dancing around and calling it a "miracle" and bringing it up every 5 minutes is surely over the top.

What I think is a miracle is how the Unified team won it in '92 when the Soviet Union was collapsing in on itself like a white dwarf.

If you people are so quick to forget 1980 was one of the lowest points for American morale in the history of the modern era. Then you get a bunch of college kids who beat a bunch of professional Russian players who have dominated the sport for years. It was something for the people to rally behind, don't know why you have to bring people down for it.

I wouldn't watch this movie with Mojo_PeiPei's eyes and Ace_O_Spades buyin.

Let's blow something way outta proportion so Americans can tell themselves they're the greatest one more time.

I'm sorry, no offense to Americans but c'mon, you can understand if some of us grow a bit tired of the rah rah rah USA USA stuff we're bombarded with every...single...day.

From what I hear the Russians were over confident and beaten up from a grueling come from behind victory against the Canadians.

Not trying to cut it down for the sake of cutting it down. Thing is, you'll have another "we're the best" flick out next week so it's all good.

Did they include the Czechs bringing the Americans an oxygen tank during one of the intermissions? Just curious.

As for a real miracle, try January 3, 1993 in Buffalo NY. Buffalo rallies from a 32-point third-quarter deficit to beat Houston (OIlers, before they left for Tennessee) 41-38 in overtime in an AFC Wild Card Playoff, the greatest comeback in NFL history. Bills quarterback Frank Reich (Jim Kelly was injured) throws four touchdown passes and kicker Steve Christie boots the game-winning 32-yard field goal. Then again, maybe I'm just biased, my brother played in this game.

Not really, I'd rather have 8 Ice Hockey golds..

Ooh, I wonder what kind of movie there would be if the US had won the gold back to back.

Maybe one day we Americans can make a movie about Lennox Lewis for you Brits...

Oh NM he is actually Canadian.

Let me see what else can we make a movie about....

English losing WWII...done.

I know how about a Moive about the English winning the Falkland Island War....that is sure to stir up some warm fuzzy memories of beating that super power known as Argentina.

How about we just let you keep Madonna and we call it even?

feeling tingly

Of course it's over-hyped, it's a movie! If all films were true to life---nothing would happen for a few hours, then something of slight interest would come up....and then nothing again.

Any sports movie is going to have to be pumped up and overblown. Whether is "The Natural" drilling a homerun into the lights, or one of the "Bad News Bears" running around the Astrodome with none of the adults being able to catch him. If you want realism, turn on the news.

If you want an escape for a few hours and you want to relive a very exciting time in U.S. sports history, go to the movies. I'm sure it's not completely accurate and I personally don't care--this isn't a history class, it's a movie.

Yes, American's have been clinging to this for nearly a quarter of a century---you know why? It was exciting. The Russians were supposed to kick that team's ass---and they didn't. The U.S. team was a bunch of college kids who didn't belong on the same ice as that powerful team and they still won. It's pretty amazing. Yes, there have been other amazing moments in the Olympics and other sports, but with the timing, the characters and the final result, this is a pretty amazing story.

Do I believe in miracles?

Absolutely.

From someone who was alive when that happened, it is good to see the story again.

I realise some of you who aren't old enough to remember, or live outside the U.S. don't appreciate the story.

It's different for some people though who lived through it. Hockey has alway been a big thing here in Michigan. Back in that time there was a little league here called the International Hockey League. It eventually got bigger and then later folded, but at the time it was a pretty small market.

Some of those kids had played briefly in places like Flint, Saginaw, Port Huron and Toledo. If they were good and played hard for quite a few years, they might of had a shot at the NHL. Local teams were farm teams, but it was still several steps below the big leagues.

Most NHL teams were still getting their players from Canada. The U.S. minor leagues were still not taken seriously and neither were the U.S. colleges.

The 1980 "Miracle" team changed that. as JoeyB said above,

So forgive us for clinging to a 20-year-old story, but some of us have a little deeper connection to it. I can walk upstairs right now and talk to someone here at work who is related to Ken Morrow. He not only played high school hockey here, he won a gold medal. Had he not been on that team, the Islanders would have never given him the time of day. But he was, they did and now he has four Stanley Cups as well.

Do I believe in miracles?

I have since then.

Perhaps this thread should've been started in Tilted Entertainment since the focus was originally on the movie itself and not the actual event. However, I do take exception to some of the comments, in particular Spartak. If your location is true to its claim, I don't see where you have much room to talk about movies being over blown with dramatics. Yes, "Miracle" was a bit Disney'ed out, but one could also point to the New Zealand based "Whale Rider" and the unrealistic the plot-lines in it.

Quite frankly, I think the 1980 US Hockey team is one of the best things to happen to America, and gave us, as Americans, the ability to suffer through the monstrosity that was New Zealand's Thompson Twins.

At the risk of taking a serious discussion and turning it into something completely ridiculous...

That's HILARIOUS!!!

alright all you people who do not live in america. in no way shape or form did i say or intend to say that america is the best country and that this movie supports that. i meant for this thread to be a praise of the movie. sure, the actual event that happened was great for our country. it did great things for our moral in a time of depression. but this movie is not even about praising america.

it is about a group of people who did not get along and overcoming that to achieve something no one thought would happen. in fact, go get the new sports illustrated, it has an excellent article about the movie and the characters.

i do not even believe for a second that this is a movie made to glorify america some more. i have pride for my country and i hope you do for your country. but swallow your pride and just enjoy a good movie and if you cant do that, fuck off.
