Norv Turner to coach the Raiders

are you kidding me?

i just saw the press conference on espn. this man said that he feels like he belongs in oakland. THIS IS THE SAME MAN WHO CRIED WHEN HE WAS FIRED FROM THE REDSKINS 2 YEARS AGO! i hope the raider nation / black hole rip this guy a new one.

maybe im just bitter, but what do you guys think?

He's worked for Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder. Since he can't work for George Steinbrenner without switching career tracks---I guess Al Davis will give him the trifecta.

Good luck, Norv.

Don't unpack.

Another year of mediocrity for the Raiders. Doesn't sound too bad to me.

It's still amazing to me that coaches with crappy performance can continually be recycled as if they are the new great hope for a team. If nothing else, I have liked the fact that Davis gives up and comers (those without head coaching experience) the chance to take the reins. I just hope Al knows something about Norv that the rest of us don't see.

Well, being a TRUE Raider fan, hopefully that won't be the case. As was the case with the Lakers and Del Harris, change the coach and the program will follow.

Being a Dolphin fan I'm kinda happy. I realize that Turner was supposed to be this "offensive genius" or something, but I was really disappointed with his play calling the last couple of years. But I don't know how much of that was Wannstedt either.

Some guys just aren't cut out ot be a head coach and I think Turner is one of those guys though. I guess we'll see.

This is from The Sports Guy's Super Bowl Blog today and I thought you might get a kick out of it.

Quote:
In honor of Norv Turner getting hired by the Raiders today, I'm running an excerpt from a Vegas column that appeared on my old website (posted on May 7, 2001). In the column, I'm describing a Sunday breakfast at Mandalay Bay with three of my buddies -- including our friend Hopper, who played blackjack until the wee hours with Turner, who had been recently fired in Washington. It's one of my favorite stories ... and it's absolutely, 100-percent true.

Late Sunday morning ...

We're eating breakfast (Bish, Hopper, Mike and myself) as Hopper recounts his blackjack experience with Norv Turner -- or as he likes to call it, "My Brush With Non-Greatness":

"Norv was up about two grand," Hopper explains. "Suddenly he scaled down his bets from $100 to $25 and started playing conservatively, like he had taken a pill that turned him into a giant wuss. I couldn't believe it. He stayed on '16' against a (dealer's) face card three times in a 10-minute span. All three times, he screwed me, and I ended up with his crappy card. All three times, the dealer ended up crushing us. And Norv's just sitting there with this dumb smile on his face, counting his hundred-dollar chips. Meanwhile, I'm losing a hundred a hand.

"So after the third time it happened, I leaned back, looked at the ceiling and muttered, 'The coach ... is ... KILLING me ...' Just like that. The coach ... is ... KILLING me. Up until that point, he didn't know that I knew who he was. He stayed for two more hands and bolted. I drove him away."

The mental image of a failed football coach mangling a blackjack table and driving Hopper insane was just too good ... for the next 15 minutes, we couldn't stop talking about it. How could a man get hired to coach an NFL team when he can't even play blackjack? We were flabbergasted by this. For instance, would someone like Mike Shanahan ever stay on "16" when the dealer had a "10" showing? I mean, EVER? Of course not.

"Norv seemed like a nice enough guy," Hopper said, "but there wasn't anything 'coach-like' about him. Can you imagine someone like Parcells just sitting there and taking it while I bitched about him at a blackjack table, right in his face?"

"How many teams has Norv coached?" Mike asked.

"He was an assistant in Dallas and the head coach in Washington," I answered. "In both places, he lost respect of the players pretty quickly."

"I can see why," Hopper sneered.

We started talking about something else. About 10 minutes later, Hopper started shaking his head again. He couldn't stop thinking about Norv.

"If I owned an NFL team," Hopper said, "before I hired a coach, I'd take him to Vegas for a weekend and play blackjack with him. That would tell me everything I needed to know about the guy. Everything."

One final note: I guess Al Davis wasn't reading my column back then.
One final thing: the Redskins, Chargers and Dolphins offense sucked with him there.

Al Davis prefers his head coaches to be eunuchs. When they aren't their gone. Norv will be another one of his bitches.

Norv Turner wasn't that bad a coach, he just had bad players in general. That team made some bad signings and worse draft picks (can we say Heath Shuler?)

He is going to a team with a real QB (Gannon, at least for now), and some good receivers. He's a passer, and his system should work there.

If he can lower the average age of that team through good drafting, they could be a very good team again very quickly.

Who are these "radiers" you speak of?

Stranger things have happened. Ol' Norv just might be the best thing to happen to the beloved Raider Nation, of course I'm probably fantastically wrong.

I think that Al Davis has finally lost his friggin' mind. It was kind of touch and go there for a decade, but I think it's finally happened.

I don't think it will last long. Norv is only the second non-rookie coach Davis has hired in almost 30 years. The first? Joe Bugel. Anybody remember Joe Bugel?

Didn't think so.

Norv Turner offesive genious. Where does this saying come from. He was in Dallas, where he had one of the great O lines ever, Aikman, Smith (when he was a stud) and Irvin (when he was not on drugs) put me there, and I am an offesive genious.
Redskins, yeah, his actions were offensive
Miami, takes one of the great runners in the NFL, and does what with him?

I am a Raider fan, and like the picking up of Jimmy Raye much better.

I love it. Being a Jets Fan, I hate the Raiders because we always have to play in Oakland and most of the time lose.
