You just can't run a college offense in the NFL.



Saddled by an accumulation of losses, and apparently convinced his Fun 'n' Gun offense would not succeed in the NFL no matter how long he stayed, Steve Spurrier resigned as head coach of the Redskins on Dec. 30 after only two seasons. ESPN's Chris Mortensen first reported that Spurrier had opted to step down, with the coach saying his departure was "in the best interests" of the franchise. Earlier in the day, only a few hours before the resignation, ESPN.com reported that Spurrier had retained prominent agent Jimmy Sexton to help him evaluate his contract and bring his status to a speedy resolution. The end of Spurrier's tenure in Washington, where he was 12-20 after a highly successful college career, was clearly expedited by Sexton, who represents four of the Redskins' most prominent players and has dealt extensively with owner Daniel Snyder in the past.

The resignation came after two hours of confusion during which Spurrier told a newspaper he didn't quit -- after the team announced that he did. Spurrier was not aware that final details already were worked out between his agent and the team.

"We had a little miscommunication there," Spurrier told The Associated Press by telephone from Florida.

Spurrier planned to release a full statement later in the day.

He called owner Dan Snyder on Tuesday morning to offer his resignation, and Snyder accepted with "much regret," according to a statement released by the team. Spurrier then told Snyder to work out the final details with agent Jimmy Sexton.

With Sexton in Memphis, Snyder in Washington, and Spurrier on a golf course in Florida, the coach didn't know that all the issues had been resolved when he told The Washington Post, "I have not resigned." Minutes later, after hearing from his agent, Spurrier acknowledged he was quitting.

It's great when everyone is one the same page.

just a rumor i heard from somebody : spurrier goes to nebraska.

again, probably a husky wet dream, but i'd like to throw it out there.

i dont see how the "fun n gun" guy will fit in ground-oriented nebraska, but who knows.

my thoughts exactly. most likely candidate for that job. can't think of any others at the moment anyway...

There is no way Spurrier is going to Nebraska. It is too cold for the golf-loving Ball Coach. I'd say his most logical spot if he returns to coaching in 2004 (which I don't believe he will) is Duke or UNC.

I don't think Spurrier will be coaching at all.

"This is a very demanding job,'' Spurrier said in a statement. "It's a long grind and I feel that after 20 years as a head coach, there are other things that I need to do.''

To me, it sounds like he's done with it completely...for now at least.

He will take a year off, and listening to offers after that. That is my prediction.

I doubt he would go back to the NFL, if he came back, I don't think a team would want to give up draft picks or whatever for a coach who really didn't have any success in the NFL. I can see why the Chiefs would for Dick Vermeil who was a proven coach and had just led his team to the Super Bowl.

He never should have let Stephen Davis go to Carolina and he played all of his old UF players who were second rate NFLers.

Good he and the Redskins sucked anyway.

Spurrier will only come back if the situation is the way HE wants it.

That means anything north Florida, Texas, and California is automatically ruled out.

Hrm...Aren't the Longhorns going to be looking for a coach pretty soon?

I dont want him to coach the Longhorns I dont want to see him coach anywhere.

Seeing that arrogant Spurrier fail gave me so much joy

Now that his enormous ego has been whittled down a bit, I wouldn't mind seeing him coaching again soon. Good coaches are rare enough, at any level.
