The No Fun League

A pair of Texans decided to make fun of New Orleans receiver Joe Horn during Sunday's game against the Titans. Apparently the NFL is not amused.

Texans general manager Charley Casserly has been informed by the league that quarterback David Carr and center Steve McKinney will be fined for mocking the routine that cost Horn $30,000, the Houston Chronicle reported Thursday. The report did not specify the amount of the fines.

In the third quarter against the Titans, Carr scrambled right and hit Corey Bradford for a 20-yard touchdown strike. Carr and McKinney inspected the padding around the goal post, pretending to look for a cell phone like the one Joe Horn used to make an end zone call on Dec. 14 in a rout of the Giants.

There was no phone, and Carr waved his hand below his chin, as if to tell the crowd the Texans didn't practice such stunts. It appeared to be all in fun -- until the league responded.

"That's the league being the league," McKinney told the Chronicle on Wednesday. "We'll appeal it and probably get our money back. If we do have to pay, I think David should have to pay. I was just an innocent bystander. We were just having fun. I don't really care. It was still fun. You have to spice things up every now and then."

"We were just having some fun," Carr told the newspaper. "We weren't trying to hurt anyone's feelings."

I know the sports writers were shocked and offended by Horn's prank, but I for one thought even that was fun and entertaining. It's always fun to watch football (especially NFL football) but it's the same as any other sport, after you've watched a thousand games or so, they really do all start to look the same and you need at least something to be different to keep you interested. Yeah, new players and new plays will always be interesting, but they can do only so much. I don't see what the problem with innovative touchdown routines is... if players really try, as Horn and now these Texans showed, it can be a lot of fun if we just get off our high horses.
My $0.04 (inflation adjusted)

I felt the same thing about this as I did about TO, when he grabbed the pom poms or pulled out his marker pen...

1, he is getting people to talk about football

2, he is having fun and enjoying the game, he isnt hurting anyone or attacking anyone

This sort of thing just adds some entertainment and fun to the serious sport, I dont see a problem with it.

OMFG! I SAW WHAT CARR did and i just cant fing believe they fined him for it! OH MY FUCKIN GOD!

this was a good natured joke unlike the cocky thing that horn did.

wow, maybe slave masters do run the league.

I think "No Fun League" pretty much sums that up

I don't understand why the league gets so upset about endzone celebrations. They get people interested in the game, gaining the league more revenue. I would have thought they would have realized this by now.

I think its mostly about setting precedents. If you allow hidden cell phones and other props, whos to say where it will end.
Pro atheletes aren't exactly known for their restraint. Next may come folding chairs over the head and spitting blood. And nothing could be said because no rules had been set. Thats what rules are about.

I saw nothing wrong with what Carr and Mckinney did. But I guess someone did and they have the right to appeal, which I'm sure they will. Most likely the fines will be rescinded.

I just don't understand whats wrong with scoring and showing some respect for the sport and your opponents by showing just a little restraint. Act like you've been there before. Get on with the game without a 5 minute comedy routine.

If I was Joe Horn, I would be sueing those guys for gimmick infringement.

Unfortunately I think it comes down to "let 'em do everything" or "let 'em do nothing".

I'd be in favor of #1, but it would probably get pretty scary and distracting watching players try to out-do each other week after week.

Please review this fark.com thread as example:

Thats hilarious, but sadly not too far off the mark.

Is all class imo.

However most of the Fark photoshops lack.

Yeah who cares about the game lets just have it so people can come up with the best endzone crap.

I love how the one who makes it into the end zone gets to do the celebration but the other 10 guys and the coach who called the play dont get to come in and really ham it up.

Give me Barry and Marvin any day over TO and Horn.

if you watch the celebration they are usually all the players on the field. everyone remembers icky woods and the icky shuffle that was the best. score a touchdown in football or a goal in hockey then you can criticise these guys. it's all emotion my friend nothing personal on the scoring teams part.

crewsor 01-05-2004 03:49 AM

Emotion is one thing, staged presentations are a different matter. You don't need props to show enthusiasm.

silent_jay 01-05-2004 07:22 AM

did i mention joe horn no, i mentioned icky woods show me his props. emotion still wins out

All the over paid crybabies need to start acting like they are being paid to do a job, not make a spectacle of there selfish self. Frankly I'm tired of all the BS. Play the game.

silent_jay 01-07-2004 07:56 PM
