One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman walked into a pub together. They each bought a pint of Guinness. Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!"

even without the pics, i think it'd be a sport. i take a very liberal approach to the word sport though.

it takes skill to fish doesnt it? doesnt it take strength to throw the thing in the water? obviously, i dont konw much about fishing.

If you're talkin' about the thing in the picture it might be a bit fishy but I don't think I'd throw it in the water.

Fishing is not a sport, except for the fish.

Hey, I'm not kidding. Think about it. People do go sport fishing.

Thanks for listening.

Define 'sport'

My definition: When your opponent's action directly influences your action. Example: Baseball - the pitcher's pitch influences your swing; Football - your opponents play influences your play;

Fishing - no

Wait, doesn't the type of fish or location determine the bait, or lure, or whatever?

Only if you kill the fish with your bare hands, you know, get in the water and fistfight a tuna or something. That's be a cool sport.

Last week on the Dan PAtrick radio show they were talking about some video where guys fish with thier bare hands. They hold the bait in thier hand or something and then the bass swallow the guys fist and they pull them into the boat. Now is that sport or some drunken amusement?

It is called noodling - there is no bait involved - you reach into holes and under overhangs and grab them with your bare hands - usually done for catfish and can be very dangerous!

WOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
now THIS sounds like a hoot. You gotta admit it, this mode of fishing takes a bit more commitment than standing there on the bank or in a boat with a rod in your hand, all dry....

There would have to be some liquor involved to get me to try that.

I feel fishing is a sport. It's me against them and they tend to do more "winning" than I do catching. I use single barbless hooks and always release the fish.

Fishing takes a lot of skill and patience, however it is not a sport because it does not require more than one person.
