Frank Solich officially out at Nebraska
Despite only nineteen losses in his tenure and a 9-3 record this year, plus a #23 ranking, Frank Solich is out at Nebraska.
"Sources close to the program," whoever in the hell those people are, claim that Walt Harris of Pitt will be heavily pursued by the Cornhuskers. So the question is - what do you think of the move? Fair? Unfair? Who should replace Solich? |

Hell...if Solich is gone like that...shouldn't someone be holding Ron Zook's place in line at the unemployment office?

Bob Stoops:
Coach Bob Stoops of top-ranked Oklahoma called Solich "a great coach." "He's got a long track record there, and a lot of success," Stoops said. "He was just in a (national) championship game two years ago. "I think a lot of Frank and his staff. Sometimes when you make some changes, it takes a year or so for everything to take effect. It seems like they're on the way to doing that." Mack Brown: Texas Coach Mack Brown, no stranger to coaching-change rumors himself, said he doesn't believe talk that Solich is on the hot seat. "Nebraska is one of the classiest places in the country," Brown said. "Frank Solich is doing a great job. They don't cheat. They graduate players. His guys play hard for him." Late-season losses at big-time programs, Brown said, often stir unfounded scuttlebutt about changes. "Frank has been so loyal to Nebraska for so many years," Brown said, "that I think we're talking about rumors." Bill Snyder: Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder, the dean of Big 12 coaches in his 15th year, said discussion about Solich's job security is difficult to comprehend. "Frank has meant so much to the University of Nebraska over the years," Snyder said. "I think he's probably the winningest coach or right at the top of the winningest coaches in the conference, and in the nation. "So I'm hard-pressed to see that that's anything more than just a rumor." |

Parallels?
Gibbs follows Switzer, not quite as successfully but still a good program, Gibbs gets fired by popular demand, and it's four years and the third coach later (Schnellenberger & Blake) before they see another winning season. Solich follows Osborne, not quite as successfully but still a good program, Solich gets fired by popular demand … Howard Schnellenberger is still alive, isn't he? |

For the record, Howard Schnellenberger took his buyout and ran to the Florida coast, where he is currently leading Florida-Atlantic, a I-AA school, to a 10-2 mark. I hope the same for Frank Solich - take your buyout and head for someplace quieter, nicer, and warmer where you are appreciated. |

From what I have seen and know about Nebraska you'd have to have sold your soul to the devil to have taken the job in the first place - any program that can be as dirty as they have and still appear to be a clean program has to have a PR Department that is better than that of the Democratic Party. Nebrasak almost makes Florida State look good yet, forever, they have an almost squeaky reputation. BS. Solich may have been the lucky one!

Being from Nebraskas I have a little different perspective, one year after a new A.D. is brought in he sees little improvement in a team that is rebuilding slowly and decides to fire the old coach. There are some strong rumors that he is gonna bring is his coach from Pittsburg. Makes you wonder if that was his plan all along.

As Roadrage states above the Sooners fired Gary Gibbs after a 9-3 season and were "road kill" for the next 4 years... remember Nebraska 70 OU 0. I do! NU better find a coach who can recruit a QB with a servicable arm and some speed or he'll end up like Smellingburger and Blake. One was a drunk and both were fired! I wonder if Mike Stoops thinks he jumped a week too early?

9-3 is an improvement on last year, so clearly Solich, must be a horrible coach, let's fire him! Oy, this disgusts me, you don't fire someone like Solich without a damn good reason and I mean like a 1-11 season.
