Jalen Rose to the Raptors

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1673879

Saturday, November 29, 2003

The Toronto Raptors believe they have found Vince Carter some help.

The Raptors and Bulls agreed to a deal Saturday that will send Jalen Rose, Lonny Baxter and Donyell Marshall to Toronto for Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams and Chris Jefferies, ESPN's David Aldridge has learned.

The league office is closed for the holiday weekend, so the trade won't be announced until Monday at the earliest. League sources tell ESPN.com that Davis and Williams will not play for the Raptors tonight in Miami. Jefferies is on the injured list and would not be eligible to play anyway.

The Bulls are not scheduled to play this weekend.

Even though Rose struggled this season with the Bulls, he was the key player in the deal. Three times in his career he has averaged more than 20 points per game, including the 2002-03 season (22.1). He has a career scoring average of 14.4 points per game.

ESPN.com reported last week that the two teams were discussing a trade involving Rose, and were trying to get the right players involved so the deal would work under their respective salary caps. This was the third attempt between the two teams to get the deal done.

Okay, what exactly did Chicago get out of this trade? I don't understand this from Chicago's perspective at all.

I think all they did was clear cap space.

But they did trade away a disgruntled player who probably would've clashed with Skiles.

Very nice!

Now the Raptors can rely on someone besides VC to score for the team.

Chicago got raped on this deal. They were just desperate to get rid of Rose.

i think that this is a bad idea on Toront's part. They would lose 2 of their better rebounders and "hustle players" Jalen Rose is on the downward half of his career now and will not be a huge help to the raptors, who already have carter and peterson who ably play the 2 or 3 spot. chicago already has a couple of big men who can rebound in eddie curry and tyson chandler (although he's more of a guard type player). overall, i am of the opinion that this trade is of no major benefit to either team.

I agree to an extent, but I think both teams "dumped" players that wanted to get out of town in Rose and Davis. I think Rose is a much better numbers guy than an actual teammate and Marshall could end up being a big part of this trade for Toronto. But Chicago needed some help inside which they will get from Davis. Chandler is nursing a back problem (I can see this bothering him all year if he doesn;t sit for a week or two) and Curry is still way to inconsistent. BTW, other than his weight Chandler is far from a "guard type". He has the height and wingspan to play center and doesn;t have much of an outside game. Williams basically takes Marshall's spot on the bench for Chicago. Toronto was desperate for someone else to score though, and that's what they got.
