Keyshawn Johnson deactivated for season

I guess we will hear lots more about this later today, but it just showed up on espn.com. First it showed up as Johnson Waived, which would mean that he would be a Free Agent and could sign with anyone. As I understand the fact that he has been deactivated means that is still on the tampa roster, but that he won't play a game for the rest of the season.

wow.

NO!!!!! This better be a sick joke as I have him on my Fantasy Football team and I really kinda need him as I am weak at WR. I am in first place right now and this is the last week for pickups!

Ha, if you have and are depending on The Mouth as a key fantasy receiver you've got bigger problems than this!

Has any specualtion been hinted as to why this happened??

Bucs deactivate Keyshawn Johnson

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson has been deactivated for the rest of the season.

"Keyshawn has made it very clear to us that he has no intention of wanting to remain as a Buccaneer beyond the 2003 season, and this approach and his actions are having a negative affect on our football team," said Bucs general manager Rich McKay. "Like every team in the NFL, we are focused on winning football games."

The controversial Johnson caught 45 balls for 600 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games this season for the struggling Bucs (4-6). In his eighth season out of USC, Johnson has totaled 603 receptions for 7,936 yards and 48 touchdowns.

Johnson has played in Tampa since the 2000 campaign after spending the first four years of his career with the Jets.

Reports originally stated that Johnson was released, but if the Bucs cut him, he could have been claimed by another team.

The Pro Bowl wide receiver has had a shaky relationship with head coach Jon Gruden the past two seasons over the amount of balls thrown his way.

"From a players' perspective, from a coaches' perspective, from an organizational perspective, this situation has become a distraction," McKay added.

With the move, the team is likely to trade Johnson at the end of the season. The NFL trading deadline for the 2003 campaign passed in October.

McKay has scheduled a news conference for later this afternoon.
off of Sports Network, found with Google News Search.

yeah. sorry abou that I should have included a link of some sort. both espn.com and sportsline had something up. I assume they still do.

I also heard the conference call was going to be at 4pm, so i guess we should know more soon.

I think it's good that teams aren't fucking around with some of these bratty players anymore. Deactivating him is a good move cause then he can't even play anywhere else and just has to sit and watch and not get any balls thrown his way. Maybe that will start teaching these players to quit crying so much.

Well I have Holt, Jimmy Smith, Sherri Glenn, and James Thrash, but we play 4 wideouts. Actually I am in 1st place right now since I have Culpepper and LT and McAllister at RB. But just hate to lose a player since now a injury could be deadly.

Wouldn't it be great if Parcells and the Boys picked him up along with Corey Dillon next year?

If I'm not mistaken, by deactivating him they still must pay him.

It makes me wonder just how big of a jerk this guy must be to have his team say, "just leave" ,"go away", we'll still pay you but just get the hell outta here.

Had to be one hell of a distraction I would think.

crewsor - yeah they still have to pay him. As i understand there are two reasons they kept him.

A) the trade deadline for this season has passed, so they cant trade him until after the season (i suspect he won't get 2 first round picks this time)

B) if they just cut him the would still have to pay him for this year, and the team would take the cap hit for both this year AND next (or at least the signing bonus money that would have been defered) onto their cap number for THIS year. I've read they don't have that kind of space, so they would have to also cut other players just to deal with Johnson's cap hit.

still... he must have really been a cancer to earn this.

feeling tingly

Wow. I'm stunned.

I'm not surprised that Johnson would put himself in this kind of situation, but I'm floored that a team would put one of their biggest offensive threats on the shelf for the rest of the season at the expense of trying to make the playoffs.

Of course, we don't know the entire story....but I commend Jon Gruden for his guts. No one player is bigger than the team....let's see how it turns out.

Just throw him the damn ball.....he's the one in street clothes.

i'm undecided about this...i mean, he was bitching a lot, but like...that's a super slap in the face...needless to say he's gone next year, but what a bad note to end on. he'll do well somewhere else.

I read that the owner talked to his agent and told him there is no reason for him to even be at the facility. I guess he is going to Disney World early.

I think it'll be a great thing for the team. Team attitude can make a huge difference; I think that's part of Parcells' success each time he starts with a new team. When your "top player" is pissing and moaning, it'll bring the team performance down. The rest of the team will be rejuvinated from this.

I wish Jim Fassel, the soon tobe ex- coach of the Giants, would get tougher with his team of underachieving misfits...good for Gruden!!!

They need to do the same thing with Sapp. Keyshawn didn't produce so it was easy for the Bucs to deactivate him, Sapp atleast helps the team (sometimes).

Keshawn spent too much time in Gruden's face during the games!! Way too much distraction for the team.

He thought he was too important for something like this to happen.

He'll move on somewhere next year. and if his attitude doesn't change he'll move on again and again.....

Good, maybe now he'll think about how maybe he should change or no team is going to want his overrated, unproductive whining ass. No one has picked up the equally immature Michael Westbrook off waivers yet, and he's younger and faster than foolish Keyshawn.

haha, I am a big fan of this, maybe {fill in name} (Terrel Owens, Randy Moss, Corey Dillon, Kellen Winsow JR, Raul Mondesi, Bonzi Wells, Rahseed Wallace...) will take note, and decide to play and let that speak, rather than be a cancer on the team.

I think there should be more of this in sports... nowadays, players have become more important than coaches in the eyes of managementy and therefore have no respect for coaches.... that is not how it should be....

Yeah that kind of reminds me of Omar Gooding's character on playmakers, thats funny how it mirrors the NFL's top stories.

Keyshawn is a fuckin whiny douchebag! These fuckin athletes make tons of money and complain! I'd love to see them come and work where I work for a night! I would give my left nut to have the talent they have and would show up and be a workhorse just like Cal Ripken Jr.
Hey... where do you think the ripken in perripken came from?

haha agree gunawan04, Gruden is in the lucky position of having a brand new shiny ring, and that carries alot of weight especially for that team. Other coaches are not in the same enviable position

Gruden did the right thing in my opinion. Some of these players start thinking (and acting) like they are God. Hey buddy....you are a football player - that's it. Lighten up.
Keyshawn was a disrespectful jerk in my opinion and a disruption in the locker room.
Maybe some of these other "attitude players" will smarten up and start doing what they are supposed to be - and that's to keep the ego in check and play football.

This was the best sports news I heard all week - perhaps other loud mouthed egomaniacal athletes might think twice. I doubt it, but hey, I can dream!

I loved Keyshawn's appearance on Fox's pregame show this morning. Jimmy Johnston and Terry Bradshaw weren't easy on him at all, and you could tell KJ was really in damage control.
