Nebraska player suspended for hitting mizzou fan

http://cf.wftv.com/orlc/sh/videoplay...reamspeed=300k - Link to video of the assault. i really dont blame the nebraska player for this. the mizzou fans were storming the field and were all around the nebraska players and they probably were scared. i blame the mizzou stadium authorities for not providing enough crowd control and letting the fans storm in while the neb players were still on the field. that said, it doesnt look like the fan was instigating anything here. i still support the nebraska player.

Haha, yeah I saw that. You'd need an army to stop all those people from storming the field, it's much easier and cheaper to let them tear the field up and the goalposts down then hiring all those guards. This'll do just fine though, hahaha.

Yeah, but what can you do? You can hire an army of security guards but that would cost so much it would put most teams in the red.
You could erect a fence or something, but people will probably crush themselves to death trying to get over it to rush the field. I'd say the best move is to just let them tear down the goalpost and tear the field up a bit while mounted security begins to herd them out.

My guess would be that the Missouri fan was lipping off within earshot of Huston. This was the first time, in something like 25 years, that Nebraska lost to Missouri. I'm guessing that Huston was in no mood to be hearing smack from the Missouri fan, and clocked him. Justification? Hell, no! I'm in Nebraska (though not really a Cornhusker fan) and I say suspend him (Huston). The "Big Red" has to many indescretions shoved under the carpet because these guys can do no wrong in the eyes of many Nebrasans. This little episode would have gone unnoticed and nothing made of it, except that it just happened to be caught by the camera for the enjoyment of all.
From the 10/15/03 editorial section of the Omaha World Herald.

Suspended for one game? He should be looking at an assault charge. I agree that the fans should not be allowed on to the playing surface, however, we all know that is not going to happen. Perhaps the player feared for his safety, but barring any weapons, does a player in full uniform really have much to fear?

c'mon! .... a mob of students rushing the field after a big upset is NOTHING new. this fuckin' cheap-shottin' brute should be suspended. I'm sick of athletes not being responsible for their actions.

[/QUOT I agree, there a plenty of Husker apologists willing to overlook this incident, and the only reason Solich suspended this kid was because of P/R reasons. I heard that only a few of the local stations ran this story, amazing how much influence football has over the state. |

The problem, as I see it, is that these kids are treated as gods in a state that idolizes Husker football. Even when busted red handed, there are few that are willing to criticize them, and those that do, are quickly shot down by rabid fans. I've lived in Nebraska for...what...19 years now. (yikes!) I still do not understand the mentality behind Husker fans. In truth, I hope that I never do.

I live near Nebraska and have to listen to their crap non-stop from July through January about "Husker" football. The Monday after the game, all the radio show hosts were playing down the incident and were even saying that he never punched the guy. They said that after reviewing the film, it looked like the guy ran into the Husker and was obviously drunk and fell down. The incident was dropped until the guy decided to press charges.
By the way, the teams real name is "Cornhuskers" and are known around here as the "Cornholers". I find it sad that an entire state has so little to be proud of that they have to worship a college football team. |
