Goodbye to the Colonel
The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) seems to be having an identity crises lately. Both of their ideas for a rebel redesign have been rejected by their fans and boosters.
http://espn.go.com/ncaa/news/2003/1009/1634592.html Does anyone have an idea for what a Rebel should look like? |

Rebel Rebel
Got your mother in a whirl She's not sure if you're a boy or a girl Wey babe your hair's alright Hey baby let's go out tonight You like me and I like it all We like dancing and we look divine You love bands when they play it loud You want more and you want it fast Put you down and say I'm wrong And put them on. Rebel Rebel you've torn your dress Rebel Rebel your face is a mess Rebel Rebel how could they know Hot tramp I love you so. Compliments of David Bowie |

Damn Tripod ate your image.
Any image of the Southern "Johnny Rebel" is going to be opposed by those who want to erase/deny "bad" history, either because they were the oppressed or the oppressors. We have a similar problem here with Fort Smith Southside High School. Their mascot: the Running Rebel. There are no images on him on the Website, and on the sideline the mascot is a student dressed in Confederate gray carrying a red flag with a blue S in the center and stars within the S. Every year there's a challenge to the mascot, and every year my father (the "prominent Black cardiologist" in town) is there to help shoot down the protest. He tells them every year, "If you succeed in erasing all the wrongs done to us throughout history, we'll be back in shackles within a generation." He helped in hammering out the current compromise solution. No one is happy with it, but no one ever has any better ideas, so it stays. |
