NASCAR points system-change it?
There has been a lot of talk about changing NASCAR's point system to reward wins more. I don't think this is a good idea, since inconsistent teams like Ryan Newman's don't really deserve to win if they have 8 or 9 bad finishes to go with 8 wins. I would like to see the 5 points for leading one lap go away since too many teams stay out during cautions to pick up a cheap 5 points. I would also like to see no points awarded past 30th place, just to prevent guys that have problems early from fixing their cars just to try and pick up two or three spots for points. An example of this was Robby Gordon's hood blowing off at Daytona and going in the stands. I would give five extra points to give a small reward for winning the race, but not enough to offset numerous bad finishes.
What would you do to the points system, if anything? Here is my idea of how the points should work Finishing Position Points 1 155 2 145 3 140 4 135 5 130 6 125 7 120 8 115 9 110 10 105 11 100 12 95 13 90 14 85 15 80 16 75 17 70 18 65 19 60 20 55 21 50 22 45 23 40 24 35 25 30 26 25 27 20 28 15 29 10 30 5 31-43 0 The driver leading the most laps will continue to receive 5 bonus points. |

I like it the way it is, regardless of all the complaints about it.
Ryan Newman is a special case, as he has won almost all of his races on fuel (and people are getting suspicious about his mileage game). As for the 5 pts for leading a lap, it ensures that the race leader has competition for the top spot. Yes, teams stay out one lap to get the 5 pts, but they risk running out of gas/getting caught on a diff pit strategy. Even so, it's just five points and it doesnt necessarily go to the most point hungry person. As for not awarding points to drivers 31-43, I think that it can be fixed in a different way. Lets NOT award points to drivers who finish x # of laps behind the leader. The more time they spend fixing the car (in the garage), the more laps they will be behind. By not awarding pts at all, you are robbing pts from drivers in races without much cautions and most drivers on the lead lap.

See, the points system has worked for a really long time and then all of a sudden, Matt Kenseth comes along and turns the racing world upside down. Then everyone starts actin like Chicken Little and yells that the whole thing is gonna come down on top of everyone's heads. The points system is fine, leave it alone. Well, I do think that awarding points for pole position would be the ONE and only change I would make. Something like 50 points extra for pole.

I like the fact that it rewards consistancy........ so leave it alone.
Teams that hang it all on the line to win get rewarded by the biggest paycheck for that week. Thats winnings reward. If you want to be a champion, yes win some races but finish well in the ones you don't win. Its a guy (or team in this instance) that gets the most outta his bad days and then capitalizes on his good days that will be your champ.
