HBO Boxing After Dark - "Baby" Joe Mesi

What do you guys think of him?

I was watching his fight tonight on HBO, other then Roy Jones, there really isn't another Heavywheight out there with his handspeed and from the looks, his footwork is very, very well mapped out. Changes directions alot, smart, always moves away from the big punch. I'm actully kind of anxious to see him go tot he Top 10 and see where he stacks up. I watched him fight in Buffalo about a year ago, just getting started. Scored a a KO, very impressive. He's bigger, faster, and 100% improvement from then.

At 233 pounds, he's got to get in there with a Chris Byrd, or a David Tua. I can't wait to see it, maybe even a Jones/Mesi matchup. This guy definitly has the ability, I just can't wait to see how good he really is. Jones/Mesi would be an absolute dream. He lacks the experience. But I can't wait to see where he goes.

I personally don't think Lewis fights again, and Jones won't go chasing anything in the Heavywheight division that will pay him less then he can retire on. A couple more tune-ups, Mesi could eaisly take on a Byrd, or Rahman, and woulden't be an absolute suprise to win.

Dominic Quinn looks impressive too. Not as nice as Mesi though.

I watched those fights too. I'm not a huge boxing fan, and maybe I missed something, but the tall skinny guy Mesi ko'ed did not look like it took too much to leave him out cold. How would he have done against either of the other two winners, or even the huge African guy with the dreadlocks. If Lewis doen't fight again, What chance would Mesi have against V. Klitscko? What chance outside of Buffalo?
Other observations:
Was it just me or did the aforementioned African dude have a womanly face in his picture, and quinn resemble rapper Ludicrous?
Sam v. Gomez: a big black guy fights a hispanic looking guy, you think the hispanic looking guy is Gomez, right? wrong.

I'm not knowledgable enough about boxing to contribute much, just my uneducated thoughts.

Mesi would destroy Gomez and Quinn at this stage in they're careers.

The guy Mesi fought had a very good golden gloves and so far, professional career. Mesi moves, punches, talks, and is smart enough to be the real deal. His only dawbacks are inexperience and the reach he has for being 233 pounds. Lewis/Klitchko probably have 2-4 inches on him. He's not very tall.

Gomez/Quinn looked impressive, but the calibur or opponents they fought are far less then Mesi has, not to mention, those 2 are lesser calibur fighters. Quinn has the talent, punching power, Gomez, well, he sucks.

Mesi will go outside of Buffalo. He HAS to step up now. He's off Friday Night Fights on ESPN, he's signed an HBO contract, and he's got to move up. Klitcko? No chance, yet. Byrd/Rahman/Tua? I think he moves well enough, hits plenty hard enough, and is certinaly smarter then all 3 of those fighters. He just lacks inexperience.

Mesi is definitely on par with Tua, Rahman, Byrd. Having said that, that's not saying much. First, I don't see what Byrd is talking about when he says he's underrated. He's lucky he's rated at all (Byrd).

Tua is lazy. He'll never go higher in the ranks than he is now. That's all I have to say about Tua.

Rahman's a little better than both of them, but not by much. His bout with Corrie Sanders was awesome to behold, though.

Mesi could knock any one of these guys out right now because he is on the brink of success and can tase it. Plus he has a huge punch. However, I don't really take him seriously untill he beats a top-ten guy.

Coulden't agree more.

I really think he will, I can't say the last time I watched a heavyweight fight, and was actully impressed froma 230 pound fighter in movement, and boxing skill. Doesn't move like a middleweight, but moves just as good, if not better then ANY true heavywheigt out there.
