Kansas? A bowl?

OMG! they just beat the #23 ranked missouri and their fans seem to be going crazy taking the goal post down and other stuff.

They're 4-1 and 1-0 big 12 and they might just get a bowl!

gov135 09-27-2003 11:48 AM

We didn't know too much about Missouri - their win against Illinois looked good until Illinois decided to lose to California. (Since Missouri's win over Illinois, we've found out Illinois is pretty bad).

Kansas is going to have a tough time with their Big-12 schedule. It would be nice for their program to get to a bowl this year, however.

As for the students going crazy, good for them. I can imagine this game means alot to them.

RoadRage 09-27-2003 12:01 PM

Kansas hasn't taken down a goalpost in so long, they don't seem to know how to.

Looks like Kansas is no longer a whipping boy.

Last bowl trip for Kansas was 1995 to the Aloha Bowl, where they soundly beat UCLA. Three more wins for them to be bowl-eligible.

Yeah, the Kansas football fans haven't had much to root about in a while. The KU-MU rivalry has been going on for almost a hundred years...KU-K-State isn't much of a rivalry because KU gets shelled every year. The game with Missouri means a lot more to them.

If I remember right, you only have to have 6 wins to get a bid which would mean they only need 2 wins to be eligible. They still have Baylor, Oklahoma State and Iowa State on their schedule so it is more than possible...

RoadRage 09-27-2003 10:08 PM

To be bowl-eligible, a team must have 6 wins against I-A opponents and be over .500.

Kansas is 4-1, but one of those wins is against Div I-AA Jacksonville State, so they have only three I-A wins.

Artermis 09-28-2003 07:37 AM

Actually you get to count some D1-AA schools towards your win total every few years. I forget excatly how it works out. I think it is one for every 3 years that you can count a D-1AA team towards your victory total.

Art

edit:According to postseason eligibility bylaws, a Division I-A team can use an exception once every four years to count a victory against a Division I-AA opponent toward the minimum number of wins necessary to become bowl eligible. This waiver will allow a Division I-A team to utilize the I-AA exception this year without regard to use of the exception in previous years. The 2001 season will not be counted in the application of the I-AA exception for future scheduling.

In an 11-game season, NCAA bylaws require that a Division I-A team win a minimum of six games against Division I-A opponents and have more wins than losses to be eligible for a bowl. If a Division I-A team is able to play only 10 games this season, finishes the regular season with a record of 5-5 and no more than one win against a Division I-AA opponent, the team will be eligible for postseason competition for this season only.

Wow, I forgot about the 1-AA win when I posted...but nice work on the research Art!!! That gives us Kansas fans a little bit more hope...

Aren't they on Bowl suspension for some kind of violation?

winsecure 09-29-2003 03:24 PM

Archer:
You must have Kansas confused with another team... I can't remember when KU's football team was last on probation, if ever. The last time a major sport was put on probation was their b-ball team the year following their National championship in the 80's.

That's the University of Alabama Cheating Tide™, not the Univerisity of Kansas Jayhawks.

What would be absolutely crazy is if Kansas were to beat KState this year. I know it's a pipedream, but as a Kansas Resident I would love to see all those crazy Manhatten people to take it in the face after a loss to KU.

stallion 10-02-2003 10:46 AM

Man, I would sell my soul to the devil himself to see the same thing ddjones. I have been to games in Manhattan twice, last year when Texas beat them and in 2000 when OU came to town when K-State was ranked #3 and OU was #8 and OU won 41-31. The looks on the fans faces after both of those losses was priceless...

Unfortunately I missed the Marshall loss this year...
