Ultimate Frisbee

I know there are others out there who play, it's time to show the love for a sport which isnt base don winning as so much as fun, and rediculous throws of what was once a pie tin :D I play for the Lafayette College club team as a freshman, and man I am sooooo0o0o0o0o hooked, its not even funny. I've become a disc whore too, collecting them left and right. I've been to three tournaments and now have 6 discs... prolly would've had more if there were better ones out there. Anyway, speak up and give the disc some love.

rock_bottom 04-25-2003 08:50 PM

We started playing just for lack of anything better to do one night. That was 3.5 years ago, since then it's kind of exploded into an informal league - 4 teams, loosely based on around which high schools we went to.
It's been so rediculously fun, and we've gotten a lot better over time. A lot of people play on college teams now, so I'm not very good comparatively anymore. What gets me is people are always asking for the game disc after our games. Gee, we play like 50 games a summer, we can barely get people to pay $10 when one breaks every 15-20 games, let alone a new one every night.
Ever do any disc golf? We've been doing that a lot lately.

Loup 04-26-2003 04:20 AM

First played about 4 years ago when I was looking for a new summer activity. I loved the sport and always had a blast.

Have yet to play DiscGolf even though there is an actual DiscGolf field 15 minutes from where I live. My buddy had just bought his own discs at the end of last season and I'm planning on hitting the course with him this one.

BlueFaceBeast 04-26-2003 04:28 AM

Ok, first off how much of an oxymoron is the term 'Ultimate' frisbee. Come on!!!

Obviously everyone who plays has heard those words or something similiar to them at some point. I picked up the sport last year, so this would be my second year playing. We play in a fairly visible field, and we get A lot of girls honking at us as we toss that disc around and do acrobatic leaps to catch it. Then the 'jocks' who shout out...FRISBEE SUCKS!!! Anyone see a football player try and play ultimate frisbee? I have, they don't last 15mins because of all of the running.

sixate 04-26-2003 08:41 AM

I played it a few times only cause some people I knew needed one more player. What a lame ass sport. I thought it was pretty easy. When I was done I went back to the basketball courts and never played it again.

scandelous 04-26-2003 09:00 AM

Whew... lame ass sport... ouch. Obviously u didnt get into a good game. And pretty easy... uhm, no. But hey to each his own. And DJP i never knew there were actual disc golf courses! that's awsome.

rock_bottom 04-26-2003 10:03 AM

Well it's called Ultimate to get around the fact that Whammo owns the copyright on the term "Frisbee" and will sue you if you have a "Frisbee Tournament" so you have to have an "Ultimate Tournament".
And to each his own. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's a lame sport.

BlueFaceBeast 04-27-2003 12:47 AM

Wow, lame ass sport? I know a few people who don't find it entertaining...they enjoy more contact, and a little more organization. The group we play with doesn't usually have 'set' plays that are highly developed. "Ultimate" though is one of the best cardiovascular activity/sport you can do. It has more athletic envolvement then Basketball.

Yeah, they have the course laid out with the "holes" (don't know what it is called) and the pars for each hole. I'm looking forward to the dryer weather so I can get a round in ... maybe some pics of the course too.

Cuball 04-27-2003 06:20 AM

freesbie is for the on the beach and it should stay there :-)

i'll go shoot some hoops now

Thanks for the laugh. I could play that sport (I use the term sport loosely) and not get tired. After a few hous of hoops you will get worn down. I'd bet any amount of cash that I could hang with you and whoever you play with, and I bet you couldn't keep up with the guys that I play hoops with. It's such a tough sport that there are a ton of pro leagues all over the world. To be a good basketball player you have to be a pretty good athlete which will make it easy to play silly games like that.

scandelous 04-27-2003 09:53 AM

What a shame to see an argument form in my post :(...however i do have to disagree with you sixate that you could stay with anyone who plays ultimate, I play basketball too with guys on my varsity team, and i hang with them every time. The real difference is, is that ultimate is the same amount of cutting as basketball, over a wider field, and with longer points. SHortest tournament games I've ever played was an hour and half, and that was a trouncing on our part. So, to rebute you, you may be able to play with the better players, I won't doubt that, but to say you wouldn't be tired.... HA!:D

rock_bottom 04-27-2003 09:53 AM

Bleh, at IU I've been running with Frisbee guys at the same time as Basketball guys were running - starters from our b-ball team that went to the final four. They ran about a mile and were beat, we did five miles and that was just our first run of two that day.
Ultimate Frisbee stresses different physical skills than Basketball. At the tournament level it's all about running, if you can't sprint for minutes on end, you will be scored on relentlessly.
I do agree that at the pickup game level, Basketball is much more physical and challenging than Ultimate, but that doesn't mean real games in both don't demand true athleticisim.
At any rate, I'm just saying that no one is going to like every sport they play. I'm sure you don't like it when people try to write off basketball as a crappy sport by saing it's all about being abnormaly tall. People who play Frisbee like their sport and are serious about it, just like people who play Basketball.

Cuball 04-27-2003 11:51 AM

but I am sure basketball players are much more allround athletes than Ultimate Freesbie players !!!

rock_bottom 04-27-2003 12:10 PM

Um that's a convincing argument you make there.

smarm 04-27-2003 01:20 PM

Having almost recovered from my 4 year addiction to Ultimate (college) I would have to argue that bee huckers run more than bball types. Ultimate is a game most comparable to soccer, in my opinion. A soccer game with just midfielders is more like it.

I would expect that world class ultimate players (yes there are world championships) would outrun world class basketball players, but so what? Most ultimate players would get dunked on all day by bballers.

What is your metric of all around athelete?

Strength? - BBall
Endurance? - Ultimate (No doubt)
Speed? - Ultimate
Dexterity? - BBall, a point guard would probably be more dexterous than a "controller" for an ultimate team

What are other criteria for judging?

sixate 04-27-2003 01:32 PM

The argument that you need more endurance for frisbee is kinda dumb to me. I played it and i wasn't even in great basketball shape and I didn't even get close to being tired. If I played with better players that might be different, but if all I did was play this game I'd have the endurance in no time and my basketball conditioning would go to hell. You need a different level of conditioning for each different sport. Do all you frisbee players think that a good basketball player can't get in frisbee shape. Gimme a break. I'd bet my life that T-Mac and Kobe could play that sport and be quicker and better than anyone on the field, but why would they waste their talent on a sport that people don't watch. There's no market for it other than for college kids that don't play real sports. Last time I checked frisbee was never on Sunday afternoons on TV competing with Footbal and Hoops. It wouldn't stand a chance and everyone knows that.

rock_bottom 04-27-2003 02:27 PM

Eh, you're putting words in my mouth. I never said a Basketball player couldn't be good at Frisbee if they trained at it, just like they had to train for Basketball to be good at that. I also never said you need to have great endurance to not get tired at a pickup game, that's one way basketball and frisbee are different.
The whole "Frisbee sucks because no one watches" is a bad argument because Frisbee is 30 years old, to Basketball's 110. Did anyone care about Basketball in 1920? I'm sure baseball and football fans at the time saw Basketball as "for college kids that don't play real sports". There wasn't even a pro league until 1940 (50 years later), and it really wasn't even a quarter as popular as it is now until the 1970s. It takes time for a sport to get popular. If after 110 years no one still watches Frisbee, then you hvae a point, but until then it's apples and oranges.

Peetster 04-27-2003 02:46 PM

I played in both an intermural indoor winter league, and an outdoor collegate conference. I loved it then, and I still enjoy it.

scandelous 04-28-2003 06:14 AM

On a side note to this awsome game... anyone have any cool frisbee designs they play with? My school team is trying to make a calvin and hobbes disk, and once i perfect the art of posting an image ill show you guys, but in the mean time anyoen who wants to show their discs post away :)

BlueFaceBeast 04-29-2003 04:15 AM

Sixate, if you're saying you didn't get tired at Ultimate are you sure you're playing Ultimate? Just ossing the Frisbee around isn't the same as playing Ultimate. Sure people can toss a disc around and not get tired, hell it's like throwing a football around and not getting tired. As soon as you start going for a goal line or end zone you'll start feeling the impact of the sport. Sure Kobe would do well at Ultmate, he's got the hops which is important for being able to get the disc out of a crowd, but could he throw it while being guarded? I won't disagree that Basketball players aren't in great shape, but they don't have the stamina though that most Ultimate players have. (Take any center in basketball and have him play the entire game, because that's what happens in Ultimate.)

sixate 04-29-2003 12:24 PM

Trust me I know what ultamite frisbee is and there's nothing ultamite about it.

BTW, I play center and power forward in hoops. That game would never wear me out. ;) Right now would be a different story, but that's because I have torn ligaments in my right anke.

Cubby 04-29-2003 03:50 PM

I agree with rock_bottom here, ultimate is a great sport. I've been playing it for 4 years now and it is a great workout. BBall is too but Ultimate is just so much more.

Ultimate has many different levels of play though so if Sixate played in one of the "lower" levels, he probably did find it easy. But take it to the upper echelon of play and he wouldn't be able to keep up.

The game takes finesse, endurance, and class. Sixate says there is no market for the game. He couldn't be further from the truth, there are over 500,000 players across the world with a 150,000 in the states alone. It has had media coverage as well..here are some links to articles:

New York Times

USA Today

Wall Street Journal

Forbes Magazine

Some athletes that play the game (From the USA Today article):
former and current NFL players Shannon and Sterling Sharpe
Olympians Picabo Street and Eric Heiden

Some info on what the game combines:
Ultimate, a high-endurance sport with few basic rules, combines the nonstop movement of soccer, the defensive strategies of basketball and the passing of football, former US. masters team captain Andy Borinstein says. The sport revolves around passing a plastic disc. On a rectangular area shaped similarly to a football field, seven-player squads must complete a pass in the opposite end zone to score. To advance the disc, the player with possession has 10 seconds to pass in any direction. Athletes may not move with the disc or initiate physical contact with another player.

I think the popularity of it will increase even more in year's to come. In Vancouver and Ottawa the leagues are the largest organized leagues in the cities. There is a 30% growth rate in Ultimate per year. This sport will see its day.

BlueFaceBeast 04-30-2003 03:34 AM

Great links Cubby.

Just kidding. I started playing Ultimate in 7th grade, and we had weekly games in my hometown every summer through college. I miss it.

matteo101 05-06-2004 01:44 PM

Ultimate is an awesome sport. I'm getting back into it this year, after not playing for about two years. It is finess, speed, endurance everything. It's an awesome sport and for someone to say that it is a "lame ass sport" just because it's "easier"(which it is definetly not) than a different sport, is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard in my life. I had to laugh reading the comments that a certain person posted. No question ultimate is an awesome sport.

Cubby 05-13-2004 02:43 PM

Love the sport...now in my 5th season. Our team's playing exceptionally well with a stifling Zone-D. 3-0 on the season so far...!

Great sport to play through the summer. As a member of my team pointed out the other day. It's our version of our parent's summer softball league.

Ripsaw 05-14-2004 10:11 AM

I'm looking for pickup games in Manhattan. I'm trying to get my endurance up, and running on softer turf is going to be easier on my knees than running on pavement. Anyone have any idea where I can get some game time in on Sundays?

ForgottenKnight 05-17-2004 12:06 PM

Ultimate's awesome. For warmup in our fencing practices we sometimes play "Ultimate Breastplate." It's where we use a small metal breastplate instead of a frisbee.

imp 05-21-2004 10:25 PM

Ultimate is a great sport =/ It can be boring if you play with inexperienced guys. I've played roller hockey for 2 hours or more every day of the week for the past few months and when I recently played ultimate. I was tired in about 40 minutes of play!! takes alot outta ya.. at one point I felt like joining some guys who were shooting balls at the hoop thing so I could rest.

I beg to differ, I played football for several years and i was on the intramural ultimate frisbee team. I think it just has to do with endurance, granted yea, some football players wouldnt last, but i dont see why most cant. Football players are supposed to be conditioned well enough to handle the lengths of games, non stop...

On a different note, I really enjoy ultimate frisbee, Its awsome. when I would play with all my friends it would get kinda physical with pushing (for "frisbee" positioning) and blocking, which made it a bit more fun. I really enjoyed those days!

SiNai 04-24-2005 02:44 PM

Time to resurrect this thread again. Ultimate rocks my world. I've been playing for about 6 months now and it is great fun. Much like soccer but less precise because the wind can dictate where the frisbee goes as much as your hand does- it's easy to jump in and catch the thing, but a little harder to get throws right. I love it though, it takes a ton of endurance to make it through a game- those guys yackin about basketball don't know what they're talkin about..

Oh, and to add a bit to the arguments, calling people "football players" is a little contrived, not all football players can be grouped into one category, and so on.. people have more strengths than the sport they play.. anyway..

Ultimate! yeeeeeeeea

hambone 04-25-2005 07:16 AM

I would only really play this in college when we had midnight games. It made things much more challenging trying to find that disc in the dark field with only one light present. Lots of fun though. College was great.

CityOfAngels 05-01-2005 09:48 PM

Can I make an Ultimate disc out of a La-Z-Boy?

drewpy 06-02-2005 08:15 AM

not only is ultimate frisbee a great sport, physical challenging etc... it is also the coolest culture ... the people are cool, laid back and focused at the same time, they party well etc... also it is a great co-ed game ... chicks who love disc are the coolest!

ah franken-jesus, what a sad life you must lead, spending time to flame a random sport. noone forces you to play it, n you apparently never played it properly.

here is a newsflash, noone cares about your deep thoughts, which game is more physicaly demanding. maybe you should do the simple math about comparing dimensions of bball and ultimate playing field and time.

btw. id really love to see, how such a highly intelectual philosophy as atheism works with tiny little mind you are presenting here.

my suggestion: start a thread "who hates the disc", maybe you wont get that much attention, but at least you will save people from reading "stuff" like that.

high_jinx 03-19-2008 12:01 PM

on disc golf...

it's amazing. you use different discs for different things like clubs in golf. and it lends itself better to more kinda hiking situations than just flat greens, so you get some really cool dog legs and downhills. there's nothin quite like hearing that chain cage clink when you nail it from 150 yards away. and when the wind factors in, those discs go crazy. i highly reccomend disc golf to anyone who enjoys ultimate.... or golf.

snowy 03-19-2008 12:27 PM

Regardless of however this thread came to be at the top of the Sports pile, I am glad it did! I play ultimate, have played the last two summers casually (I was still getting in shape), and am planning on playing more than casually this summer (now that I'm in shape). I play with friends on a team in a summer league organized by parks and rec.

In a good game of ultimate, you are constantly on the move, always running. It can be tiring if you don't have the endurance for it. One of the things I've noticed in our division (we're in the "spirited" division, meaning we're not novices and we're not competitive) is that despite being in the non-competitive division, each team has at least one player who takes the sport super-seriously. Now, this can cause problems as ultimate is refereed by the players, and everyone calls fouls. We had one instance where this one jackass was calling every foul he thought he saw--in the final game of an all-day tournament. Needless to say, people weren't too happy--especially the players who had been playing all day and whose game kept getting longer.

So, my general advice to any player of ultimate--carry a copy of the latest edition of the rulebook with you. And a first aid kit.

I'm really looking forward to my team this summer! A lot of people from last year's team are returning, and we have some cool new players signed up. We haven't picked a name out yet, so any suggestions people have would be welcome.
