Who are your sports heroes?
There's already a thread about people in sports who piss you off now lets make one about people over the years who you've looked up to.
Here's a few: Cal Ripken Byron Leftwich Magic Johnson Mario Lemieux Brandin Knight |
Dan Marino
David Eckstein Magic Johnson (a lot more if I was a bigger hoops fan) Randall Cunningham (loved him as an Eagle when he was good) |
Charles Barkley :D
really, i've never had any heroes, even when i was small |
Grondar, I 'd have to agree with you on a couple;
Stan Musial Rex Hudler Kurt Rambis Dan Marino David Eckstein My sports heroes tend to be the guys that got where they are becuase they worked their asses off. Not necessarily because they were gifted with a ton of natural talent. |
Farve
Jordan Bobby Knight Jackie Robinson |
Well, I can cross Bill Buckner off my list...:(
Larry Bird Adam Vinatieri David Eckstein (popular pick, I just like the little guy) Cal Ripken Jr. Kirk Gibson |
larry brid
bill russel farve |
Charles Barkley is the man plus i love how hes Republican
|
Wayne Gretzky - The greatest athlete of the 4 major sports in this country.. compare his records to any modern day records and there is no comparison.. if he was playing today in his prime he would proably score 300 pts in the new bettman nhl..
Johan Cruyff and Juergen Klinsberg Mickey Mantle ( im a met fan ) |
Michael Jordan
Walter Payton Mike Singletary Brian Urlacher |
Lee Priest
Bruce Lee Michael Jordan By the way it's "Favre" not "Farve". |
bill russell
tiger woods muhammad ali |
Dale Earnhardt
John Elway Brett Favre |
Jared Lorenzen-- some have dubbed him the Hefty Lefty and the Pillsbury Throwboy, but still he gives men like myself hope that we can excel and play quarterback at that.
:D |
Sandy Koufax - quiet perfection, "the left arm of God" as SI once put it
David Robinson - I hate the Spurs but this guy is a model citizen David Eckstein - this guy is amazing, he has no arm, mediocre range, an average bat, but just seems to come out on top all the time Sammy Sosa - very modest but very powerful Magic Johnson - I saw him speak a couple years ago at my school. Very inspirational and a smart businessman. |
Wayne Gretzky
Bobby Orr Pete Sampras Jack Nicholas Tiger Woods Me |
Cal Ripken, Jr.
Gilbert Perreault Pete Rose (let him in the hall) Michael Jordan Jim Kelly Steve Tasker Dean Smith ( the greatest coach ever) |
Emmitt Smith
He is a perfect gentleman. He is a tribute to his sport. He knows that he is a role model and fulfils all the obligations as such. I hope when Arizona comes to Texas Stadium this season Emmitt has a 300 yard game and scores 72 points. |

I would like to present my hero: Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwan (and his little friend).

|
Wade Boggs : my favorite baseball player as a kid growing up
Michael Jordan: my favorite athlete period Bobby Herbert: Saints starting quarterback when the Saints were consistently good with the Dome Patrol. |
joe montana-football
dr j-basketball willie mays-baseball bobby orr-hockey wilt the stilt-all world baller:D |
Quote:
Just an observation, but maybe you should learn to spell one of your sports heroes' names. I believe it's "Favre". :D |
Shjon Podein.
He used to play for the Colorado Avalanche though I lost what happened to him after he was traded out. Sports heros also have to have a good presence in the community and Shjon made himself known in community service by choice, not because he was forced to. |
Wayne Gretzky
Michael Jordan |
Muhammad Ali...
|
sports heros...
well... mohammad ali michael jordan steve waugh john eales tony 'plugger' locket |
I admire a lot of athletes for their skills and accomplishments, but none would be a hero. Too many are flawed in their personal lifes.
|
Everyone has problems sometime in their life, if they're famous however it gets blown out of proportion ten times over.
And Jadey, don't single me out, dragon2fire messed up too :) |
jordan
iverson barry sanders |
Dan Marino (my #1 guy)
Mario Lemieux....he's just an all around super nice guy who can give a good interview to boot |
Nolan Ryan
Ted Williams (I hate the Sox, but this man was a class act.) Every Yankee in Monument Park -Mikey |
Being from Maryland,
1 Cal Ripken 2 Johhny Unitas Both stellar atheletes, as well as decent people. |
This one is easy for me: Dan Marino
Honorable Mention: Patrick Ewing |
Michael Jordan
|
Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Fernando Valenzuela, Tommy Lasorda, Sir Alex Ferguson, Ryan Giggs, Denis Irwin, Roberto Baggio, Dan Marino, Don Shula, Larry Csonka, Alex English, Coach Frank McGuire and Mia Hamm.
|
Dale Earnhardt. He was a great family man, a superb race car driver...just a great overall guy.
|
Ali, Oscar Robertson, Sean Casey. Can you tell I'm from Cincinnati? ;)
|
DEI youre right about earnhardt. He was a very good man. it's too bad he (like every race car driver and fan) got the "hick" stereotype.
|
Johnny Unitas
Brooks Robinson Cal Ripken, Jr. David Robinson |
Mario Lemeuix, cancer and record breaking at the same time has to be tough.
Brett Favre. What a big heart and love for the game. Not Corey Dillon. What a whiney piece of shit. Barry Sanders. The back who had it all. Lance Armstrong. 'Nuff said. |
|
mickey mantle
roy white thurman munson willis reed |
Joe Dumars, particularly in contrast to Isaiah Thomas.
|
Now that Grant Hill is back, I'll add him.
|
Kirby Puckett. His Game 6 performance of the 1991 world series is something I'll remember all of my life.
|
Dominique Wilkins
Michael Jordan Brett Favre Roberto Clemente Ivan Rodriguez |
Brett Favre
Magic Johnson (Game six: rookie year against the sixers) LA Rams fan (not a St. Louis fan) Jack Youngblood for playing in the Super bowl with a broken leg. Hacksaw Jim Reynolds for selling it every game, and John Capelleti. Jerry West Vin Scully and Chick Hearns |
Charlie George (scorer of great goals, but not a great goal scorer)
Liam Brady (Legend) Michael Thomas ('Pool fans know why) Lev Yashin (The Black Panther, The Octopus, Black Gloves, whatever you wanted to call him, it all meant a clean sheet for Russia/Dinamo). Vyacheslav Tretiak (the benchmark for all (Russian) goaltenders) To be honest those were all before my time, but looking through old articles, video and stories I admire them greatly, some of my sporting heroes now: Tana Umaga (current Wellington/NZ rugby great) Christian Cullen (former " " " " " " " " ) Thierry Henry (Frankly, the heart and soul of the team I watch at 3am on most Sunday mornings) Andrei Shevchenko (I'm a 1/4 Ukranian myself, it's amazing what he has achieved, playing in a leauge that is notoriously difficult to score in) Zenedine Zidane (The greatest footballer of the modern era, #2 all time behind Pele) Stephen Fleming (The captain of the NZ cricket team, legend) |
Football: Jerry Rice
Baseball: Bernie Williams, Cal Ripken JR. Basketball: Michael Jordan |
[QUOTE=deaby]Wayne Gretzky - The greatest athlete of the 4 major sports in this country.. compare his records to any modern day records and there is no comparison.. if he was playing today in his prime he would proably score 300 pts in the new bettman nhl..
[QUOTE] Um...sorry? He wouldn't score 300, or even close to his real totals in his career. Scoring is waaaay down since his time, for whatever reason, and not much has been done to fix it. |
Michael Jordan
Joe Montana Julius Erving Barry Bonds Jerry Rice Oscar Robertson Sam Jones Tom Glavine |
Favre - He's the man... plain and simple
Trevor Linden - God I just love this dude |
Michael Schumacher formula one driver
Lance Armstrong cycling Tiger Woods golf Jackie Robinson baseball Jack Johnson boxing Muhammad Ali boxing Michael Jordon basketball Wayne Gretzky hockey Steffi Graf tennis Pete Sampras tennis Andre Agassi tennis Jesse Owens track & field |
Steve Nash- MVP front runner and great role model for aspiring canadian ballers. If he won the MVP he would be assured a place among the basketball heros, at least for canadians. I think he has it alread though with what he's done for canadian basketball.
Roy Halladay is mine for baseball. He is the bright light here in toronto. Whenever he gets the ball you feel that he can win it no matter how bad the rest of the team plays. At least he will show you some sweet at bats. I love the look batters give him after striking out on one of his evil curves. Bad injury plagued season last year but im excited for this season. Fuck hockey |
Michael Jordan - needs no explanation.
Mark Hughes - A true warrior. In a league where changing teams is seen as the ultimate form of betrayal, punishable only by death, he is the only visiting player to receive as big a cheer when he is intoroduced at Old Trafford as any of the home team's players. They will always love him because he is a champion. Gary Kirsten - The Great Man. 'Nuff said. |
I'g going to have to go with a lot of you and say Michael Jordan, there was just something about that man. I'm also very fond of Bird and Sir Charles.
|
Cam Neely
Pedro Martinez of the late 1990's Carlton Fisk Larry Legend |
How did George Brett not make anyones list? 20 years in one town, would have played for food money. 3100 hits, probably the best hitter of our generation (.318 career, hit .390, the highest since Williams went over .400), won a world series for.... Kansas City, gasp!
|
Roger Staubach -- aka, Captain America.
|
Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Mats Sundin, Trevor Linden.
Yes, I only watch hockey :P |
Definitely Steve Yzerman (way to go vbuser for finally mentioning him :))
Also Joe Dumars Stevie's playoff run a few years ago on one leg was one of the greatest I've ever seen. |
