Clarett faces multi-game suspension

Quote:
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Maurice Clarett was cleared to resume practicing with national champion Ohio State, but faces a multi-game suspension, the university said Friday.

The NCAA supplied Ohio State with a list of allegations against Clarett on Thursday. Members of the university discussed the allegations with the sophomore on Friday, athletic director Andy Geiger said in a statement.

The NCAA and university had been investigating allegations about Clarett's academic performance and the player's acknowledged overstatement of the value of items stolen from a vehicle he had borrowed.

The suspension handed down Friday was only for non-academic allegations. A 10-person university panel probing charges of academic fraud is completely separate from Clarett's open-ended suspension.

Clarett remains ineligible for games, but could rejoin practices as early as Sunday, Geiger said.

Clarett would do so on Sunday, coach Jim Tressel said Friday.

``He said, 'Can I practice tomorrow (Saturday)?' and I said, 'Well, you'll be alone; I'm giving the guys the day off.'''

Tressel said he didn't know how long the suspension will be.

``Our next step is to make a recommendation to the NCAA concerning the length of Maurice's suspension,'' Geiger said. ``Then, we wait for their reply.

``We have no way of knowing how long this process will take, but it will be a multiple-game suspension.''

Kay Hawes, a NCAA spokeswoman, said the organization doesn't have the authority to suspend Clarett, and it is up to Ohio State to determine the player's eligibility.

Clarett remains on scholarship. Classes resume Sept. 24.

Clarett's mother, Miechelle, and the player's attorney, Scott Schiff, did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment.

Ohio State began an investigation after a New York Times article in which a former teaching assistant accused Clarett of receiving preferential treatment in class. Norma C. McGill said Clarett walked out of a midterm exam last fall, but passed the class after professor Paulette Pierce gave him an oral exam.

That prompted Ohio State to form a 10-person committee to look into charges of academic fraud involving several athletes.

Meanwhile, the NCAA was investigating Clarett's claim that more than $10,000 in clothing, CDs, cash and stereo equipment was stolen in April from a car he was borrowing from a local dealership.

Schiff acknowledged many of the items belonged to the dealer, not Clarett, and that Clarett exaggerated the value of the items. In a statement issued last month, Clarett apologized to his teammates and Ohio State for ``any embarrassment this incident may have caused.''

University officials then announced they would hold Clarett out of team activities ``until and unless'' his eligibility matters were resolved.

looks pretty certain that he will miss some games (my local sportsman said 6 games) but that would definately be a blow to OSU.

Good job NCAA.

College is for learning. The guys that aren't there to learn should be treated very harshly.

I saw on ESPN.com the other day that Ohio St last year were using up to 10 players last year who were ineligible. Where is the NCAA on this? Oh yeah, Ohio St is a money school.

OSU won't be affected in the least. Supposedly they have two other halfbacks who are close to Clarett in ability. Must be nice to be a minor-league football team.

They have two other halfbacks, yes, but not at Clarett's ability.

It was leeked out that it will be at least 6 games. OSU should do just fine without him, they won't defend the title, but will go 10-2, and beat Michigan!

It would be interesting to read the NCAA list of allegations, given it apparently is "not" academic in nature (per article above). It must all relate to the car, and the stuff claimed to be in it.

Bad moves, but worth a 6 game suspension? After he was also held out of 4 weeks of preseason practice? That's 10 weeks.

I think 6 is too many. I'd go with 3 (again that's 7 weeks). It's enough to screw up the Heisman and the Buckeyes (with Wash game 1 and NC St game 3).

Regardless, I hope this makes it clear to Mo that he's not LaBron.

Thanks for listening.

I would be really surprised if OSU had two more backs that are even close to as good as Clarett. I admit I'm more of a Pac-10 guy, though.

Still no word on the #. I still think it's 3-4, not 6, 8 or 10.

After watching Saturday, it's clear the Buckeyes are better than last year. For the first time in a long while, since the mid 70's, they look awesome.

Nobody beats them, with or without Clarett. You read it here 1st.

Thanks for listening.

Nothing worse than an OSU fan who claims his team will beat the mighty Wolverines!

I wouldn't be bragging about a 2-8 record over the last ten years!!!

I hate Ohio State and I'm glad he's gonna miss some games.
Although, he won't miss enough. He should lose his college eligibility. I wish the NCAA would make an example out of someone. Because they don't these damn kids will continue to get away with this kind of shit.

OSU has a damn good coach (bring Cooper back) and I wasn't too upset to see them beat Miami. I couldn't figure out who I hated worse....Miami or Osu! Anyway....

I don't see why people hate OSU so much. Oh wait I know, cause they are good, DAMN good. Sorry Michigan your days of beating the bucks are past, cooper is now gone, you have to deal with tressel now and our great defense. I think now we have taken care of 5 heisman hopefulls, Kingsburry, gesser, nevarr, penn st's RB, Dorsey, and Miamis RB, this year we took care of pickett, and his receiver. The Bucks are unstopable, they will only loose if they do it to themselves.

according to ESPN's heisman watch list, sobody voted him for second, thats not bad, its no chris gamble or craig krenzel. heh he. But really if your team does make it to the SB and wins don't you think that navarre would be a good choice? Or you a Perry fan?

That is totally crazy, John Navarre a heisman candidate?? Well I wish him luck, he's been through a lot with the media here. Early in his career he had a case of the chokes in big games, but he's fought through it. Last year he was solid and Saturday he looked good....We'll see when ND comes to town.

I think the NCAA and school mostly cited the stolen car items issue, but in reality Clarett's been a troublemaker for a long time and they're probably happy to get rid of him. They do have enough depth on their team that they can replace him.

It would be a shame to see Clarett's career continue down this self-destructive path. Maybe Jim Brown can straighten him out? (Yeah, right...)

Two questions:

Why didn't Clarett come clean from the start? Once you're caught, lying never helps.

Why hasn't Geiger filed the official OSU response to the NCAA charges yet?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks for listening.

Well from the information that I have come across, apparently they have found some 100$ check from an anonomous source that clarret cashed along with another 500$ check from someone else. He never reported these and were not found out till this week. Plus that fact that apparently he still was not telling the truth on Monday. But really the rules suck for a kid in college. If you do somthing wrong you either have to tell them the truth which helps the NCAA convict you, or you have to lie. You can't pleed the fifth. or stay nuetral and make them prove you did wrong. either way he did something wrong, then lied and lied some more thinking he was above it. Now he will have to face those consiquences. By the way, the maximum punishment for what he did was 4 games. since he lied, the max punishment for that would be half the season, so most people are saying it would be 10 games 4+6. And chances are if that happend Tressel will not play him the last 3 games.
