What are some of your favorite/worst sports memories?

Here are some of mine..

When I was a little kid, I begged my parents to take me to a Braves vs Dodgers game in L.A. ( Me being a braves fan from the L.A. area.) I begged and cried for about 2 weeks. Finally, the day of the game came, and my parents told me that we would not be able to make it. I was crushed. So later on the day, I turned on the T.V. to watch the game.

The Date: April 8th, 1994.
The Occasion: Kent Mercker became the 2nd Atlanta Brave ever to throw a no-hitter. :(

About 4 years ago, I went to an Angel game with a couple of buddies of mine. They were playing the Boston Red Sox and we were sitting right next to the right field foul pole. At about the 6th inning, Trot Nixon comes up and hits a towering fly ball our way. I reach over my seat and catch the ball in my glove. I got an ovation from the crowd. :D

Best: January 6, 2002.

Bears vs. Jaguars.

The game had been postponed due to September 11th (it was originally scheduled for that weekend but was one of the games held back until the end of the season). I had tickets to the original game, but they were still valid for this one. This was even better than it would have been back in September. The Bears needed to win this game for a 13-3 record, the division, and a first round playoff bye. Not only did they win, but one of the most bizarre and funny plays I have ever seen happened on that day, and I was there for it.

In the third quarter, three hundred plus pound lineman Keith Traylor intercepted a pass and ran 67 yards downfield with it before being tackled. The Bears ended up winning that game, and I still remember seeing Traylor on the big screen at the stadium. When they showed his face, I started laughing uncontrollably. He looked like a deer in headlights. He wanted to get rid of the ball so bad, you could really tell. Just thinking about that play puts a smile on my face, especially since I was there to see it. :)

Best: Being at Cal Ripken's 2130th consecutive game, tied with watching my Maryland Terrapins and Baltimore Ravens winning Championships.

Worst: Two words: Jeffery Maier (godamnmutherfuckinsunovabitch...)

Worst sports memory...

1995, Second round of NFL playoffs, Arrowhead stadium.

We (the Chiefs) were 13-3 that year w/ home field advantage through the playoffs and were playing the Colts for our first playoff game since we had a bye the week before. It was incredibly cold, with snow on the ground. Our kicker at the time, Linn Elliot, missed 3 field goals (2 of which were extra point distance or shorter.) Any one of those field goals would have won the game. We were upset by the Wild Card Colts, and it was miserably cold.

Best: Maryland vs Indiana for the 2002 college hoops title. Watched the game at Cole Field House and then rioted.

Worst: 92 - Duke-Kentucky

Best personal accomplishment... In a softball game, I hit for the cycle with an inside the park HR, I went 5-6 with 8 RBI's. I had success in little league, but that topped it. Second, when I shot 75, beating my best golf score by 4 strokes.

The best was when Stevie Y held up the Stanley cup for the first time, I almost cried.

it was the last home game of the season for the sooners and texas didnt lead till the last 2 mts of the game and WE WON THE DAMN GAME!

it was so fuckin cool to see the OU seniors cry! yes CRY!
it was like the lakers, the sooners were CRYING! boy was that SWEET?

Best: Nov 9th, 2002. The Bluegrass Miracle. LSU was downby three and threw up a desperation Haily Mary pass at the end of the game. Incredibly, Dedric Henderson caught the pass and ran into the endzone. The douchebag UK fans actually torn down a goal post before they realized what had happened. My whole apartment complex rocked after that play.

Second best: Tie betweem the Saints only playoff victory and Warren Morris's bottom of the 9th HR to win the CWS for the Tigers.

Worst: 92 Duke/Kentucky

Best: David Robinson retiring as an NBA champion

Personal: My middle school basketball team went 72-2 through 6th, 7th, and 8th grades

Best - Can't remember the date, but I was at the Nets - Magic game where Shaq ripped the backboard down.

Worst - 1997 World Series, Anytime the Cavs met Jordan in the playoffs, The Drive, The Fumble

Best - 2003 World Champion Cleveland Browns, 2004 World Series Champion Cleveland Indians, 2004 NBA Playoff Champion Cavaliers.
Uh, more seriously, how about Ali at the Olympic Ceramonies in Atlanta?

Best - Hasen't happend yet. When Emmit Smith retires and I don't have to watch his overrated ass every Sunday. Good thing the Cards are never on TV.

Worst - Gary Andersons perfect season, down the tubes against he Atlanta Falcons, costing the Vikings the game. Same game, Dennis Greens call to kneel on the ball with the best offense in NFL history on the field.

The date: October 26th, 1997.
The place: Joe Robbie Stadium.
Event: The wildcard Marlins pull off miracle win in eleven innings.

Most dramatic game I've ever been to - had me on my feet throughout. Sealed my love of baseball.

I still consider it one of the coolest experiences of my life. Shame what happened in subsequent seasons - but as a certain gubernatorial candidate is fond of saying: we'll be back!

My best and worse happened at the same time.

Red Wings win Lord Stanley's Cup and then Vlady got hurt in the limo. It was just about the saddest thing that could have happened to the city of Detroit...only way it could have been worse is if it was Stevie.

Then the Red Wings won Lord Stanley's Cup again and watching Vlady hold it made me do something that had never happened to me before with sports....It made my cry it was so magical.

Worst:
1. Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals. 4th quarter meltdown by the Blazers that sent the hated lakers to the finals.
2. BCS not allowing the Ducks into the Rose Bowl in 2001 when they were without question the second best team in the country and the only team with any chance to beat Miami (they woulda!)

Best: Watching the Ducks destroy an overrated Colorado team and then seeing an extremely overrated Nebraska get demolished by Miami in the the game they should not have been invited to.

Do I come across as somewhat bitter?

Best...Has to be 1986 [the whole year!] Mets beat the Sox. Giants win the Superbowl [I know it was '87, but the '86 season] and Penn State are your National Champs...great year [especially the 16 inning playooff game between the Mets and the Astros and, of course, Bill Buckner!!]

Worst--2000 Game 1 World Series and Armondo Benitez gives up that homer... He SUCKS...good luck Mariners!!!

Me getting promoted to the little league majors and striking out in every game...

hard to say off the top of my head, but one of the worst moments that springs to mind was when I was stuck on a firewatch (watching for sparks, fires, etc) on my last command and had to sit through the superbowl for the first and hopefully last time in my life. From the little that I can recall it was the Green Bay Packers vs somebody else (probably '97, not that concerned to look it up) and I forget who won now.

Best by far . The night Holyfield beat Tyson what a night.

ok, so this ones about Cricket so i doubt many of yall will care (or understand).

anyway, Australia vs West Indies (i think 1996, but i may be wrong).

Great match, the windies batted first, and put in a big score. Warnie and McDermott smashed away at them, but it wasn´t enough.

well, when the aussies came to bat, there was a bit of a top order collapse.
yada yada yada...walsh, ambrose... blah, blah, blah.

it came down to the last over, and we looked like we were going to lose.

by the last ball we needed four runs to win. michael bevan - possibly our greatest one day cricketer - was at the crease.

the whole 90,000 or so in the crowd were absolutely electric.

bevan was looking square, everyone, even the windies were expecting him to go for the square boundary... but no, he played a perfect drive, and played the ball into the fence (4 runs for those who don´t know) directly in front of him.

massive crowd, incredible game. everyone was just partying like nothing else.

but apart from the great cricket, another aspect of that event that makes it special for me were the pissed guys in the crowd.

this was in the day of full strength beer being sold like hot-cakes, of mexican waves where everything from golf balls to glasses or urine were thrown in the air, and constant police presence

anyway, one particular incident i remember was when this guy sitting one row in front of us jumps up, and announces to the whole area, that he can drink beer out of anything.

so, someone produced a battered old leather hat. and he poured beer into it, then drank out of it.

then someone produced a thong (thats a simple aussie shoe, not a g-string), and he poured beer down it and into his mouth.

then, the crowning moment was when the guy sitting two seats to my left, stripped off all of his clothes, and gave the guy his underpants.

at this point, at least 1000 people were shouting and yelling and encouraging this guy.
so, then, he dunked this other dudes undies into his beer, then squeezed all of the beer into his mouth.

this is quite possibly the funniest, and grossest thing i´ve ever seen.

anyway, at that point the police arrived and arrested him and the nude guy.

god i miss drunks at the cricket.

I remember that game!!! Definitely the best ending to a cricket match I've ever seen. Although that World Cup in 99 against the Safas was pretty good as well.

There was another one about a year ago when Bichel and Bevan did it again for us. I think against Sri Lanka ?!?

Gotta love the piss-heads at the cricket. The latest craze is the beer wench. We got one last year for about $50 an hour and i must say not having to get up for your beers was superb. Unfortunately though, she got kicked out for flashing her cans one too many times :p

Anyway, the best sporting event for me would have to be the Sydney Olympics. In particular Aus V Russia in the basketball. Atmosphere was just electric and the game had everything with the Aussies getting up in a nail biter.

Seeing the Knicks play in Madison Square Garden was also pretty cool.

the best had to be when 3 of my sons won the golden gloves in st louis .had 3 rings set up and they were all in a ring at the same time.was a great time.couldnt be with them all at the same time so i seconded the youngest ones corner. priceless!!

Tese are football (soccer) memories, so i doubt anybody will care!

Best: England need at least a draw to qualify for the World Cup '02, but are losing 2-1. With about 10 seconds left, and with literally the last kick of the game David Beckham (I'm sure some yanks must have heard of him!) rockets a free-kick straight into the corner. I've never shouted so loud in my life!

Worst: England being knocked out of World '90 in Italy after losing a penalty shoot-out to the Germans. The bloody Germans!!

Game 6 - 2002 World Series - Giants vs. Angels

My dad turned off the TV, but I kept watching and witnessed the most miraculous comeback i've ever seen.

Worst

Dodgers trade Mike Piazza.

I will list best and worse both as a fan, and from my (very) limited playing experience.

7th grade B team football: We ran our plays onto the field through rotating recievers. Our coach was in the hospital with his wife who was having a baby, and another coach who had never worked with us was in charge. After a touchdown, we did not have kickers, and so 2 pt conversions were the norm. I ran the play in, but told the Qb a different play, a pass to me. The play got messed up, but he threw it to me, and two points! Because it got messed up, I think the coach did not know what I had done, or maybe he just didn't understand or care, because he never said anything about it.

As a Baylor fan, there were lots of lousy football games, but my worst sports memory was Baylor vs. UT in '97 at homecoming. As usual, we were having a terrible year, and I had been up all night the night before working on homecoming stuff. I stayed for part of the game, and then we got behind and I went home to take a nap before the festivities that night, not wanting to watch yet another defeat. I woke up hearing the bells on campus ringing as the freshmen carried the goalpost through the campus. We never had much to cheer for, but I had missed the one huge upset of my years there. I tried to learn my lesson and stay till the end, or near the end of every game after that, only to watch them lose. Alot.

7th grade basketball, I was on the B team. The last game of the season the coach had the A team rest for the city tournament, and was going to divide the B team and have us play the A and B teams of a really lousy middle school. I was on the "upper half" of the B team, until I got in trouble for goofing off during practice, when the coach put me with the group playing the other school's B team. The morning after the game, my name was on the announcements as the high scorer of the "C team" game. The only time all year I had made the morning announcements, and I was thoroughly embarassed!

My best memory, easily, was made in autumn of 1995. It actually comprises two separate incidents, but they're so inextricably linked in my mind, they sort of count as one memory. As a die-hard, true-blue Seattle Mariners fan, this was the season of dreams. I remember watching Randy Johnson dominate - not just beat, but dominate - the California Angels to hand the Mariners their first-ever playoff appearance. Twenty-plus years of futility, pain, and 'wait-til-next-year' were over with that blowout in a one-game playoff. I recall Ken Griffey, Jr. homering in that one, and I also recall being stared at by people passing by my dorm room, who apparently thought I'd gone insane. Maybe I had. Anyway, the best part of this memory, though, came a few days later. In the fifth game of the American League Division Series against the Yankees, the Mariners took the game to extra innings, but gave up a run in the top of the 11th to go down 5-4. In the bottom of that inning, the M's got two runners on when Edgar Martinez came to the plate. Edgar lashed a wicked double down the left-field line, scoring both runners, cementing his place as the greatest Mariner ever to live, and sending the hated Yankees home to think it over for a few months.

And if I thought the looks I got during that single-game playoff were wierd, they were nothing compared to the ones I got that night.

2 moments really stick out in my mind.

The first was when I was 15 playing our grand final in cricket. I bowled out their best batsman by bowling my very first ever flipper.

My second greatest accomplishment was more of a psychological victory. We were playing soccer a few years ago. Both teams were hacking each other a fair bit. Buggy (guy on my team) and this other guy were giving it to each other throughout the game. Buggy did a quite bad hack. Straight away he turned away, head down, hand up admiting he did bad. The guy hit him from behind. Buggy just kept walking away. He hit buggy again. Our coach charged onto the field and belted this guy. Both teams swarmed into a massive brawl. I was on the opposite wing so it took me a while to get there. I jumped on the backs of thes 2 huge guys. Grabbed them around the throat and peeled them away. They turned to belt me. For once common sense got the better of me. I yelled I was trying to break it up. They turned around and saw the brawl finishing so they didnt push it. I was marking one of these guys a few minutes later. He started picking a fight with me. I told him to have his go before I wiped the floor with him. He wouldnt do it so I laughed at him and moved to a better position. About a minute later this guy came running down the field with the ball. I came charging in and yelled "Ankles" just before I hacked his legs out from under him. He went flying face first into the ground. The ref gave them the free kick. I just walked away pretty pleased with myself. He got up and hit me in the back. I just kept on walking. He came in again but the ref restrained him. He was yelling about what I did to him. The ref told him they had the free kick and it was accidental. At that point I turned around and flashed him the biggest grin. The ref who was physicall restraining this guy couldnt see me because he had his back to me. This angry guy could. He totally lost it and went mental trying to get to me. The ref red carded (sent off) him. We were a man up for the rest of the game. It was a psychological battle that I won. My mum is totally against violence but even she was proud of me with this one.

Best - Even though I am not a Lakers fan, Game 4 of the 2002 Lakers were down 99-97. lakers ball with I think 12 seconds left in the game.

Kobe drives in past two, puts up a floater that bangs off the top of the rim. Shaq tries for the immediate putback, but it is off, Divac smacks the ball out of the paint, and it goes to the top of the three, were none other than Mr. Robert Horry is waiting. Webber charges out, Horry calmly puts up the shot right as Webber reaches him......in the bucket just as time expires....100-99 Lakers.

Such an excruciantingly pleasant game.


Worst- An easy memory. i was in india during the World Cup that was played in america. Everyone gathered around to watch the game, I think it was Italy v Someone......and before the game what should happen, but the commentators saying, 'and now for the true winners of the games...the AMERICAN TEAM' and then they went and paraded around the field. i was very embarrased to be American that day.

Worst: It would have to be 2 years ago when Derek Jeter came out of nowhere to redirect an errant throw to get the weed-smokin' Jeremy Giambi out at home. Why couldn't he have just slid? I swear if I see that replay one more time, I will seriously hurt somebody.

Best: Nothing right now but hopefully will have one come mid-October.

Best: The Drive, The Fumble, the Broncos 2 Super Bowl wins, the Avalanche winning two Stanley Cups, Dale Earnhardt winning his seventh championship, Earnhardt winning the '98 Daytona 500.

Worst: The three Super bowl blowouts against the Giants, Redskins, and 49ers, the Avalanche being eliminated by the Wild in the first round last year, Earnhardt's death in the '01 Daytona 500

Cubs game in the bleachers.... wait a minute, I don't know if this qualifies for best or worst.... in fact, I don't even remember anything after the 4th inning.... or who won.... or who they played.... But my head really hurt the next day !

Never been to a pro football game but my worst sports memory was January 3, 1993, Buffalo comes back from 32 points down to beat the Oilers. It was gonna be a Texas Super Bowl but they blew it. We had to get a new T.V. the following monday by the way. DIE FRANK RIECH DIE!!!!!!

Worst moment was when the Orlando Magic went to the NBA Finals, which I think was 1994 or 95. They had home court advantage and got swept by the fucking Houston Rockets. Such a disapointment... (Nick Anderson's fault)

Best moment was when Tampa Bay whooped up on Oakland last Superbowl. Tampa Bay all the way.

Decent moment was when the Marlins beat the Indians in the World Series, when ever that was.

worst memorie would have to be me going to indy for a colts titans game (im a niners fan but go to games that might be good within a few hours driving distance i live in ohio) anywho we get there 4 of us from work and while walking down the stairs from the top of the parking garage to the stadium we hit a landing where i see the biggest pile of shit i have seen in my entire life it looks like someone took some major laxative on top of a days worth of beer and chicken wings, now mind you this is sunday afternoon half hour before kickoff.

best: 1999 HR derby in the right field bleachers at Fenway Park watching Mac go nuts.

worst: seeing Reggie Lewis collapse during a playoff game and then dying shortly thereafter

The best; watching Mickey Mantle play. The worst; watching the Mickey Mantle funeral on t.v. Reality sucks.

Best:

Farve hitting a streaking Rison for a touchdown in SB XXXI starting the domination of New England.

Worst:

All of SB XXXII.
