R.I.P. Herb Brooks..

Being a die-hard hockey fan, this really hurts. The coach of the 1980 miracle on ice USA hockey team died today in a single car accident.

Yeah I am watching it on tv as I write this. I am stunned and very sad. One of the greatest hockey coaches ever. :(

RIP Herb Brooks

One of the greatest accomplishments in US sports history !

Definately one of the greatest, if not the greatest accomplishment.

A moment like the 1980 hockey game versus Russia will never happen again in the Olympics since they let the pros in. It's a shame!!!

archer2371 08-14-2003 07:04 AM

Yeah, the only coach to ever get Team USA to win two medals in hockey (remember, he coached the '02 team as well). As a fan of hockey, the Stars (he coached the North Stars for awhile), and of the United States, this is a damn shame. *Sidenote* We didn't beat Russia for the Gold, we beat Finland for it, but beating Russia was a huge step towards the gold.

BigGov 08-14-2003 12:59 PM

Russia was the semi-final game. Russia also had professional players while we just had college guys. Well, Russia didn't have "professionals", they were in the "military". They just practiced hockey all day. That's what made it all so special, we didn't have a chance.

archer2371 08-14-2003 06:33 PM

Oh I know it was hugely important because it was the Big Bad Russians who should have squashed us into the ice as if we were nothing, and we took their own game and spit it back at them.

BigGov 08-14-2003 06:56 PM

Wasn't saying you were wrong or out of line or anything, just giving some added background to a great story.

Nikilidstrom 08-15-2003 08:01 AM

he will definitely be missed. An amazing coach and by all counts an amazing man.

Tex 08-15-2003 08:44 AM

Another thing that made it so special is that in an exhibition game a few days before, the Russians had demolished the Americans 10-3.

Here's a good article about the game...
