FFL - #1 Pick

Any advice for the #1 pick in my upcomg FFL draft? Am I going to look like a fool if I don't take Holmes?

Any other FFLers here?

McNabb. Consistant. Consistant. Consistant.

Marvin Harrison would be a good second choice if he's available.

Portis is a good no. 1 pick. I think LaDainlian Tomlinson would be a good secound round pick if you cant get Portis. But stay away from Vick and Fred Taylor who are the most overrated fantasy players this year.

I personally wouldn't go Holmes with the #1 overall.

Obviously, I wouldn't go WR, Defense, or TE. So you're left with a QB or a RB. LT is a nice pickup, but not #1 overall. Though if you want him, he might not fall to your pick in the second round (I'd almost wager there's no way he gets past the first round, cause in a 12 player league, I think he's worthy of one of the top 12 slots, if you have smart owners). There's only about 6 decent FF QBs (off the top of my head, I'm thinking McNabb, Favre, Vick, Garcia, Gannon, McNair or B. Johnson) and a scant # of RBs. Vick helped me win 2 leagues last year, so I'm not gonna bash him. Plus, I'm a VT Alum.

So after all that, I agree with Jimmy4.

I'd take Holmes but make sure you cover yourself by taking his backup.

I've seen Holmes first, Ricky Williams, Faulk, Mcnabb, thats about it. I've seen drafts with no WRs till the 3rd round so that should tell you not to take Harrison number one lol. GL though

I will probably still stick with Marshall Faulk. He's puts up more numbers in 12 weeks, than most guys put in 16 weeks. It is definitely a chance to take given his last few years, but it has worked to my advantage so far. The beauty with him is that you get a lot of rushing and receiving yards, which is a bonus. I'm still a little weary of Holmes. That injury hasn't sounded like it has totally healed.

RB's are usually the most solid picks. I generally will wait a round or 2 for a QB.

I always go with a RB in the first round. Ricky Williams would be my top choice. I would shy away from Holmes and Faulk high in the first round because of injuries. Tomlinson would be a good choice as well. At the bottom of round one, I am going to be looking at Portis, McCallister, and Faulk. Personally, I wouldn't take Holmes until maybe the third or fourth round if everyone gets scared away.

Its all about strategy, NEVER pick a QB first!!! and NEVER pick a RB first, unless they all run out. always find the best at the hardest positions (TE, DEF, and maybe even WR).

For example, i picked up Drew Bledsoe with second to LAST pick in the draft, and he ended up being one of the best QB's...

I think i might go with Miami DEF with my first pick this year. but thats just me....

hope thats helps...

I agree with a few of you guys.. Dont Pick The most ovious players first cause look what happend to Faulk and Warner last year. THey were pick 1 & 2 in my league. I ended up with Garcia as my first pick. I still had Green as my 2nd pick for a running back so Choose Either a Decent Rated QB Not one that takes chances of getting hurt alot! ( Vick ) Macnabb, Gannon, Garcia ect. Or choose Portis, LT, R williams as your first pick.

I am kinda buyest on my first pick though. Usually I try to not only pick a good player but one who is on a team I plan on routing for that season!

My 2 cents...

AT

GO BUCS..

Texans are a joke.. I dont tell people I live in Houston when Im talking about football..

I think it depends on how your leauge scores, there is an emphasis on QB in my league, so QB is more important than others, that being said, Porits, Holmes, Tomlinson, I am not sure if they are the Williams, Healthy Faulks, Martin caliber. Tomlinson is beginning to show he is, but Holmes has to be healthy, and Portis needs to do it again.

Somewhat on a tangent, I hate having the first overall pick in the draft. I prefer a low first round pick and the high second round pick.

Go with Faulk, when he is healthy (he is) he is unstoppable. Plus, people are starting to take the Rams for granted and that means tons of fantasy points for Marshall.

BTW, who the heck is having their drafts this soon? What if LT or Faulk or McNabb get hurt in the pre-season? Then you're fucked. I just rather wait until the last week of pre-season, but maybe it's just me...

I wouldnt touch Vick yet, another year like the end of last absolutely. I'd go w/ Williams or Portis. I hate having the #1 pick, would rather have the 6 or 7th out of 10 or 12 if the draft is set up like a "snake"

Ricky Williams, LT2, Holmes or Portis. Any of these RBs will do.

And don't you DARE draft a WR or QB with the first pick, that's just dumb.

take a top rb first. then a top qb. as far as getting points, there are some stout defenses this year worth taking a look at over wr's or another rb with the third pick. for instance, if harrison and owens are gone by your third pick, take the bucs or panthers D, both of those D's will get you more points than the 3rd or 4th best available receivers. but you did ask what to do with your first pick. unless you are first overall...take any good rb that is left. if you are first overall...its a toss up between mcnasty and williams. tough call, glad i dont have first overall.

as for tomlinson vs williams vs faulk. you gotta look at the corresponding defenses. miami's d is gonna limit the time opposing offenses spend of the field, which translates into more running time for ricky. conversely, the charger and rams defenses arent as stacked and both back could see fewer carries. particularly with the great passing offenses on both of those squads. just some shit to noodle on in considering your first pick. good luck!

Harrington might be an ok fantasy player later in the season, but this is his second system in as many years. Not good for a new quarterback, or a young team for that matter.

SLEEPERS:

RB Ladanian Tomlinson - San Diego RB who carried the team last year. Things will change this year with WR David Boston, but I don't expect LT's numbers to go down dramatically.

WR Peerless Price - I know you usually don't pick a WR with your first round pick, but Price will be the key receiver catching passes from the ever so sweet Michael Vick

Defense Baltimore - So they didn't make the playoffs last year, its because Lewis was out for most of the season. With Lewis healthy and the addition of Arizona's Terrel Suggs, the defense should be banging.

Wow! I think it ultimately depends on the scoring for your league. Depending on if it's a points league or yardage league, or a combo of both. I would mos tlikely avoid Holmes with the number 1 pick, but he's still a first rounder. With Larry Johnson around and the concerns about Holmes health, they'll probably lessen his work laod a bit. Though he'll still be a stud. Most likely you can't go wrong with Williams, Portis, Tomlinson, or Faulk.

As a side note, I'm in a keeper league in which I get to pick 2 players from my roster last year that were picked after the 4th round. (That way all of the "studs" are thrown back into the talent pool for the draft). So, of the players I drafted after the 4 round last year I have Portis, Vick, Randy McMicheal, and Donte Stallworth. I'll probably keep Portis and Vick and then go RB and WR with my first two picks. But, it's awful nice going into the draft knowing I've already got 2 horses on my roster.

Ladianian Tomlinson is not a sleeper, he's getting drafted with the top five picks in most drafts. A sleeper is a player who you can get in the seventh or eighth round who will put up huge numbers, like K-Rob was last year.

Go RB Tomlinson, or Portis, or Ricky Williams. Holmes has a few to many questionmarks.

I also agree with the idea of picking up QB's later. Two middle round picks for me last year were Brooks and Vick.

Thanks for listening.

I think in most leagues, Vick will go very high this year. I think he is just to big a risk to take in the first round. Brooks will be available in the third or fourth round where he would be a great pick.

Vick has to be the first pick. He passed for almost 3000 yards lasat year but he rushed for an astounding 777 yards. He had only 16 passing TD's but he had 8 rushing TD's (only 15 games btw). He only had 8 INT also.

In most leagues you need to throw for 50 yards to get a point but only 20 yards rushing for a point. His 3000 passing yard was worth 60 points, which is not bad compared to proabably 65-70 for the better passing qb's but he had another 35 points rushing, which most of the better passing qb's might get 5-10.

Plus Vick is in his 3rd full season in the NFL and his 2nd as starter. he also has peerless price to throw to now.

I want all of you in my league so I can get Vick and own the league..

I think Vick is too big of an injury risk and he doesn't throw enough TDs. Maybe Price will help but I am not convinced that he is going to make a big enough difference for me to take Vick first overall.

He had 16 TD's passes with a decent WR.

Lets look at this for a second. Aaron Brooks (LMAO sorry.. had 25 TD passes and 2 rushing TDs for a total of 27 and he threw for 3500 yards and rushed for 21 yards.

Vick had 16 passing TD's rushed for 8 more and had 3000 yards passing and more importantly 777 yards rushing. I suspect the rushing will go down and the passing will go up. If he can pass for say 3800 yards and get 22 passing tds and keep around 500 rushing and 8 rushing td's who in the league will be more valuable?

Btw why is he at any more risk of an injury than any other RB. He is not small and brittle.

Vick is certainly not slight and brittle but I don't think he is as solid as a typical running back. Also he is far more subject to getting blindsided and is a target for someone trying to make a big hit. I also feel that for a top pick you shouldn't have to hope that the passing offense improves. Perhaps most importantly though, to continue with your example, are those numbers for Vick enough better than the numbers by Brooks to justify taking him in the first round? I think the drop off at RB is much greater than at QB.

If that's your strategy, you must be terrible or else your leagu settings are very skewed. RB's should go first and second rounds. In traditional leagues, they get the most points. Once all the Tier 1 backs are gone, you go with best available, IMO. However, I will probably go RB, RB, WR, QB in the first 4 rounds. Maybe even take QB in third round, depending who it is. I guess it will all end up in how my buddies pick. Holmes will still be a top 5 pick probably, but he is a little risky this year with his injury status not 100% clear.
