Best College Conference (All Sports)

again, i'd have to go with big 12.

all the teams in the big 12 are awesome in AT LEAST one major sport.

even baylor kicks ass in baseball.

schools like texas and oklahoma and very well rounded.

Currently, Big 12.

In 2004, ACC.

The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!"

Obviously, the answer is whatever conference your team plays in. And noone is gonna convince anyone else here otherwise. Let me try to give a somewhat objective opinion:

Of all the major conferences:
Football: ESPN started their championship presented to the best football conference this year, specifically to address this issue. This went to the Big Ten. This is not because they are overated, sucky or anything else I saw in the other thread. This is because they beat teams in other conferences in their respective biggest games of the year, including taking match-ups with the Big12, Big East, two matchups with the SEC, and another with the Pac-10. Last time I looked, they also had the team that won a national championship.

Baseball: Warm weather conferences only need apply. (Though Ohio State fielded a very nice team this year). Give it to the Big-12, Texas, Baylor, etc. SEC is a close second.

Hockey: Of the major conferences? Tough to decide, but that Minnesota team is always amazing.

Basketball: The ACC for right now. I'm not so sure in 2004, cause they just diluted the strength by adding shaky basketball programs.

Wrestling: I really have no clue. But the best ones always seem to come from Iowa and the Big Ten.

Fencing: Let's go with the Ivy League here.

Women's Sports: Pac-10 for things like swimming, diving, some soccer, certainly softball, etc. Big East or SEC for basketball. ACC women play some mean soccer.

i think the b-ball should go to big 12 also.

2 out of the final four teams were big 12 teams.

two of the 4 first seeds went to the big 12.

how could b-ball not go to Big east? who won the NIT, the womens' title and the men's title title?

as for football, that's hard to say it seems to change every year this year however, i have to say it is the big 12.

Big 12 for baseball too.

i've just been in jamaica for 3 weeks, very nice country.

i'm talking conference strength, not a single program's strength.

I have said this before, the PAC-10 has far more many championships than any conference. I can't find the page that has the complete breakdown by conference. But here is the top 10 by school for all sports (as of end of 2002-2003 school year):

#1 UCLA: 90
#2 Stanford: 85
#3 Southern California: 80
#4 Oklahoma State: 44
#5 Arkansas: 39
#6 LSU: 38
#7 Texas: 36
#8 Michigan: 31
#9 North Carolina: 29
Penn State: 29

Number 1, 2, and 3 are all PAC-10 teams, and they almost double #4. That being said, I am not claiming superiority in the 'big' sports, but this thread is about all around stats. You can not argue against the Pac-10 if this is the case.

well, i meant currently.

and i really doubt that all those schools were part of pac 10 when they won all those championships.

In 2004, when the Hokies and Canes join, the ACC will be in the running as the best overall conference.

Right now, I would say it goes to the Big 12.

Remember that football is not the only sport in the NCAA. The Big 12 (with the notable exception of CO) sucks at XC and Track, for instance. The SEC is really strong in Track, but sucks at Volleyball. The PAC 10 is great at XC and Volleyball.

I think that it depends on how you tabulate the scores. Do you count individual championships in Track, Wrestling, etc? Do you count Fencing and Golf?
