Baseball all-star help

Which change would help increase the excitement of the All-Star festivities (Not the game, just the other stuff)???

Aluminum Bats in the home run derby?

Skills competitions (a la NHL weekend, but with a MLB twist: throws from the outfield, speed running the bases, etc.)?

Old-Timers Game?

_____________??
(Your suggestion here)

Drop the home field advantage crap.

The fact that the result of a game that doesn't count could affect the outcome of the one game that counts more than ANY OTHER is stupid. Especially given all the limitations placed on the managers (players who don't belong there on the team due to quotas, requirement to get all bench players into the game).

That said, I'd like to see a skills competition much like in the NHL, with home to first, or quickest time around the bags, accurate throw (catcher to 2nd, OF to the plate) and so on.

Well, being that before this year they simply had home field advantage swapping between the leagues every year, I don't think this is much different. Except now I guess you can blame your fellow league players if they lose? I dunno.

A stat:
The AL has only won 14 of the last 38 all star games, but they've won more than 50% of the World Series in the same time frame. I'm not gonna crunch the numbers on the winner of the All Star game and the winner of the world series, though I'm sure someone has already done it...

The AL should be a little worried and ready to show up under this new format....

I think that making every team have a representative lessen's the excitement of the game because you are not going to be seeing the truly best people playing. I think that only the best players should be represented and if that means your team has nobody in the game, then nobody should be in the game. This also screws deserving athletes out of an all-star appearance

even if they didn't send one from every team, the best still wouldn't be there. Do you really think godzilla was an all star.
Fans want to see one from their home team.
