Teams with the most wasted talent

Okay what do you guys think of this one. This is the thread where you list all the teams that have tried to "buy" themselves a championship and failed miserably. All that talent just doesn't seem to work together or injuries, or what have you.

My list:

NY Yankees 2002
Portland Trailblazers for about 4 years now
NY Knicks for about 3 years now
The Michigan "Fab Five" (okay maybe that's a bit of a stretch)
Dallas Mavericks for about 3 years

C'mon lets see some more...

New York Rangers
Atlanta Braves... all those great seasons and only 1 WS to show for it
Cleveland Indians

Grondar 04-22-2003 05:22 AM

New York Rangers (NHL)
Washington Capitals (NHL)

Texas Rangers (MLB)
New York Yankees (MLB)

Surely the New York Rangers.

I kinda disagree with the Rangers cause they have no pitching, and never did. But theres alot of firepower there.

How about the Clippers? Every year people say its their year, they have good talent, and not even a playoff birth.

Loup 04-22-2003 07:54 AM

Just as 3/4 of the responses above:
NY Rangers

NoCure 04-22-2003 08:51 AM

Cleveland Indians in '95 and '97

RAMONES!!! 04-22-2003 09:36 AM

rangers hands down, capitials have jagr, bondra, lang, and lets just not even get to the rangers....

Zesty 04-22-2003 12:20 PM

Red wings
NY Rangers
NY Yankees 02

Quadraton 04-22-2003 01:40 PM

How much is the New York Rangers payroll again? $76 million?

And that, folks, is why I love the sport of hockey so much. Even if you dump a boatload of money into a team, there's no guarantee of success. The Red Wings last year just happened to be the exception to the rule.

HeyAgain 04-22-2003 03:12 PM

The Rangers since their last Stanley Cup.

The have to rebuilt the entire team, release all the old and/or ineffective players, and try to build a team that both quick and offensive minded.

First thing they have to do is release Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, Eric Lindros, and Mike Richter.

bond007 04-22-2003 03:33 PM

the Ohio State Buckeyes, during most if not all of the John Cooper era.

Jadey 04-22-2003 09:19 PM

How about the L.A. Clippers?

I mean c'mon. Elton Brand, Lamar Odom, Andre Miller, Quentin Richardson, etc. And their all still pretty young and improving. Brand is the most veteran of the bunch.

BulletBob 04-24-2003 02:11 PM

I disagree with the Knicks, as they don't have anyone besides Spree/Houston. Right on with the Trailblazers though. I feel sorry for Scottie Pippen as he's stuck in a horrible situation like that.

The_Dude 04-24-2003 02:22 PM

i'd have to go w/ the kansas jayhawks a couple of years ago.

roy williams had a team full of future nba-stars and nothing happened.

i'm hatin on williams cuz he left

Halx 04-24-2003 03:39 PM

Clippers for sure.. holy shit. Andre Miller, Elton Brand, Olowokandi, and Lamar Odom, and they still finished last in the west.

GuttersnipeXL 04-24-2003 04:20 PM

San Diego Chargers two and three years ago....I think it took alot out of Junior Seiau...I mean, they sucked BAD...Can't wait to see him play for the Dolphins though.

G_Pac 04-24-2003 04:53 PM

how bout the early 90's Laker teams.... nick van exel, eddie jones, elden campbell, kobe, shaq, ced ceballos, anthony peeler... i guess it took phil to lead them to the title

gibber71 04-24-2003 06:40 PM

Got to go with the Rangers.Highest payroll and most mediocre talent.

shaq=ignorance 04-24-2003 08:10 PM

Shaq can't buy a brain, does that count?

ExArmyGuy 04-24-2003 09:58 PM

Perhaps it's more a waste of money than a waste of talent but the New York Mets last year (and so far this year) are pretty pathetic.

Prophecy 04-25-2003 07:30 AM

Yeah, the Blazers really just can't seem to bring all the chips together, the team has so much talent and they just can't seem to take it to the next level. Its a shame.

poit77 04-25-2003 11:23 AM

Rangers are by far the prime example of spending way too much money and getting nothing in return. The Dolphins are up there too, spending a ton of money on Ricky Williams and convincing Cris Carter to come out of retirement, and for what, to miss the playoffs. I'd love to see the Seau trade blow up on their face as well

BigBlueWrecking 04-27-2003 09:18 AM

The BRAVES!!! Throw in the Blazers too.

plaino 04-27-2003 11:13 PM

NY Rangers take the cake on that one. They keep on snatching up players that do just fine where they are, and are usually the main draw for all the crowds in those cities... most of the teams that get rid of these players are just trying to save money.

If you think about it though, when they get rid of those players, less people will go to see the superstar talent... not to mention those teams that have to let these players go are usually worse, winning less games... therefore getting less ticket sales. One wonders in the long run just how much money they save by getting rid of them.

I don't know too much about other sports... but it seems to me like Anna Kornikova is sort of wasted "talent" as well... I mean, if she was better, we'd get to see that ass a great deal more in the top matches!!

deepinjello 04-27-2003 11:30 PM

I'm hating on self because he left Dude. We gotta team here at U of I.

How can people say the braves as wasted talent? They have won the NL east like 11 times in a row! Just because you don't win the world series doesn't mean your seaon was a bust folks.

How can you say that once you get to the playoffs a few years in a row its not just enought to get there anymore you have to win the big one

matteo101 04-28-2003 01:55 PM

Both "Ranger" teams...... man are they horrible with such amazing players

The_Dude 04-28-2003 03:32 PM

add this yr's texas a&m team to that list.

they had 6 or 7 draft picks going this yr, and what did they do w/ all that talent? a 6-6 season.

rcarb 04-29-2003 08:20 PM

I agree with the Clippers. But I want to add the Golden State Warriors with a ton of young talent and the Washington Redskins with that payroll of theirs.

dragon2fire 04-30-2003 12:29 AM

o the pacers no question

maybe the jailblazers

bender 05-01-2003 07:13 AM
