Danny Green retains IBO cruiserweight belt, stuns Roy Jones Jnr in round one
By Adrian Warren
December 02, 2009 .Danny Green stunned Roy Jones Jnr in their International Boxing Organisation cruiserweight title fight in Sydney, stopping the American in the first round at Acer Arena.

Green put down the eight-time world champion with a well-timed right-hand punch midway through the opening round, and he then pummelled the American legend with a flurry of blows against the ropes.

English referee Howard Foster called a halt to the fight at 2min 02sec into the contest.

Boxing legend Jones, 40, had been stopped only twice previously in his 20-year career, by Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson, both in 2004.

Green sounded almost apologetic after humbling one of the greatest fighters in history.

"He's one of the greatest fighters of all time and the opportunity to fight him in Australia, thanks Roy Jones Jnr," Green told the crowd.

"I almost feel bad doing that.

"That almost most hurt me to do that to someone whom I aspire to look up to as a professional fighter inside and outside the ring.

"He's a bloody legend."

Jones offered no excuses for the defeat that could signal the end of his career.

"We don't make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny," Jones told the crowd.

Jones is scheduled to have a rematch with his old American adversary Bernard Hopkins early in 2010, but that bout and his continuation in the sport must surely now be in doubt.

Green took aim at the critics who had given him no chance of upsetting Jones, even though the Australian had trumpeted his underdog status before the bout.

"I didn't surprise myself," Green said.

Green, 36, was making his first defence of the title he won with a fifth-round TKO against Julio Cesar Dominguez, from Argentina, in Biloxi, Mississippi, in August.

Jones was bidding to become the first boxer to win world titles at all five divisions between middleweight and heavyweight, but he was overwhelmed by Green's first-round onslaught.

Green has now won 28 of his 31 fights since 2001 - 25 by knockout.

Jones's record now stands at 54 wins (40 by knockout) against six losses in 60 bouts.

green looked imressive but i think the fight was stopped prematurly.

jones was still able to keep his hands up and defend himself.

sure he was getting a pummelling, but that should have been allowed to go on as long as his hands are up

$10M for a two minute workout..not bad eh?

I agree dlish it did look like a premature stoppage, Jones was absorbing a lot of the punches with his gloves, he was rocked mind you, but yeah could have gone longer.

I'll take 10 mil for 2 minutes of that, mind you I may not remember any of it after it's over.

Jones is 40, and hasn't been a serious threat to anyone since his knockout loss to Tarver. Having said that, Green seems to show potential, but he hasn't fought a whole lot of good fighters. His division is lackluster in general (most of the great fighters are at retirement age), which is not his fault, but still.

Taking nothing away from his victory; it just doesn't impress.

Roy Jones has been gone for a few years now. One of the greats, but time to call it a day

I'm not so sure that what amounts to a standing fetal position qualifies as defending oneself.

i suggest you watch the video again and tell me how many clean headshots green got in in that final 40 seconds or so. chances are you're unlikely to see more than 2 - and maybe 2-3 clean body shots.

ive seen bigger pummellings that have gone far longer.

if you can keep your hands up whilst letting very few punches lands out of a few dozen attempted, then that amounts to defending oneself and the fight should have been left to proceed. a horizontal foetal position and you might have a point.
