JL Langer passes The Don, becomes the highest run scorer in Aussie cricket
Congratulations to the lad. He was never the most devastating scorer, never the most dashing stroke player, but a very greedy batsman who accumulated runs relentlessly, and a very decent man to take this honour from the second greatest cricketer in history - the remarkable Donld Bradman. (althoug calling him the second is a whole different debate that might rile up the Aussies - I admit it is very difficult to compare WG to the Don, coming from such hugely different era's)
Langer was one of the men I liked to see the least of all line up against England (although as a man I like him a lot... a lot is said about Aussie gamesmanship, and god knows I would love to see us stuff a series defet right down Punters throat, but Langer - along with Gilly - are two of the be most sporting men in the game). Never as dominant as Hayden or Punter, never as graceful as Martyn, but so many times he would be the one who would pile on the misery. Quote:

Well done Langer. I'll ignore the obvious falsity about the Don. Obviously some crazy attempt at humour :shakehead:
The comparisons between Hayden and Langer are amusing - the strike rates of both were actually quite similar - Langer just didn't play the big shots like Hayden, so seemed to be scoring more slowly. His batting reminds me of Steve Waugh, in that he always seemed to guard his wicket jealously, and rarely gave it away cheaply. |
Exactly what I always admired about JL... he was a scrapper who sold his wicket dearly every innings he played.
As for the Bradman vs Grace debate - I dont think its a clear cut as most Aussies probably do! Statistically they both stood head and shoulders above their contemporaries to a similar degree. |
