torn quadricep muscle - rugby

Strange Famous 05-01-2009 10:32 AM

I should say that when I say football I mean "soccer" to American people.

And yeah, obviously dont count little knocks and so on. I mean, its rare to come out of a game without a bruise or a sore muscle or a cut or graze or something. I only counted the things I had to have outside medical treatment for or kept me out of action for ages (each time I did my hamstring was out for three months - and the third time I did it about 3 mins into a game...)

And Ive played badminton pretty much every week for the last 3 or 4 years and never so much as pulled a muscle - I guess that thats the sport I should stick too!

Some of mine a little wierd:

broken wrist - tripped in a 1600M start
sprained ankle w/ connective tissue tears - literally the next to last step of the last race of XC season (stepped on someone's foot and rolled it to the ground)
dislocated thumb - playing "keep the balloon in the air" with my brother
sciatica - running
plantars facitis - running
IT band irritation - running and notable because it was by far more painful than all the other combined but did no damage at all. Just hurt like a motherfucker whenever I'd run more than 2 miles. That, more than anything, contributed to my outright hatred of any swimming pool-based workout.

On of my best friends, who was an 800/1500M guy with me in college, broke his arm when he decided to try high jumping for the first time on a wet day during warmups.

dislocated shoulder--us football.
mangled carteledge in my right knee--hockey (caught a skate between the boards and ice and twisted. not good)

silent_jay 05-01-2009 12:24 PM

dislocated both shoulders at least 7 times each
broken nose
6+ concussions
partially torn rotator cuff
arthritis throughout the major joints (knees, elbows, wrists, ankles)
broken pinky finger oddly enough
a back that is fickle to say the least

all from hockey of course.

Hope that the light bulb going off above my head doesn't blind you and make you fall, Jay. ;)

I've had tons of knocks, but have always avoided the sidelining injury..

didn't matter if it was football, american football, basketball, baseball I just had a way of staying fit enough to play.

You trying to be like John 'the tit' Terry?

djtestudo 05-01-2009 07:26 PM

I was pretty lucky that I never got seriously hurt playing sports. Mostly some floor burns playing basketball and indoor soccer, a couple jammed fingers.

The worst in my memory was getting hit in the side with a baseball while standing on second base on a pickoff attempt. I thought I had ruptured an organ, it hurt so badly.

highthief 05-03-2009 06:49 AM

Currently sidelined due to hip and knee injuries and will miss my half-marathon next weekend.

:(

Hurt my shoulder when I was a teenager - it's never been 100% since. If I make too many throws from 3rd to 1st or do too much shoulder work in the gym, it acts up again.

MontanaXVI 05-03-2009 12:54 PM

face to face smash in "smear the queer" in middle school resulted in a deviated septum

rolled ankle playing softball caused a ruptured peronial tendon that I hobbled on for 4 more years before I couldn't stand it anymore.

broken wrist playing flag football, got tackled and tried to catch myself and broke the fall with a broken wrist

'cb' 05-03-2009 08:11 PM

concussion, hip flexors, torn mcl and acl at the same time (us football)
countless sprained ankles, couple broken fingers (basketball)
broken tailbone (whitewater rafting)

also, a bunch if other little nagging injuries but nothing very severe

spindles 05-03-2009 09:03 PM

Torn calf muscle at soccer training. Grade 1 tear and only out for a few weeks, but gee it hurt.
Dislocated AC joint (playing soccer the day after my bucks party). My wife to be (and now ex-wife) was extremely pissed off :). This still is painful if I throw anything too much - was a PITA playing baseball.
Broken finger - playing backyard cricket with my brothers - dived to take a catch and got the ball right on the end of my finger

Bear Cub 05-03-2009 09:55 PM

The only one that created any long term issues is a torn labrum in my right shoulder.

healer 05-04-2009 06:36 AM

My love of basketball gave me permanent patellar tendonitis and too many dislocated fingers to remember.

Sadly, the knee injury has made it almost impossible for me to play anymore. :(

Strange Famous 05-04-2009 07:20 AM

I have to say that breaking someone's leg was my worst moment. It was a bad challenge.

I also cracked a guys ribs playing cricket with a short ball which for a few seconds was pure terror cos he went straight over and I thought his heart stopped or something.

Poppinjay 05-04-2009 07:45 AM

Concussion - baseball
damaged rotator cuff - track (discus and shot put)

Vaultboy 05-04-2009 07:53 AM

Had to stop playing football (soccer) due to 2 ingrown toenails on my big toes of both feet. Much better quality of life since i stopped giving impact (from both the running and ball impact) on my big toes).

Dislocated a mate's shoulder (basketball) I blocked him. He fell off balance and hit the kerb at a bad angle with his shoulder.

cementor 05-31-2009 08:00 PM

Torn ACL - hoops ( the day after my son was born, they set me up in the Mat ward with the better half! My mom is still pissed and the kid started college this year LOL)
multiple sprained ankles - hoops
2 sprained thumbs at the same time - ( played the whole season - miserable) hoops
strained achilles tendon - hoops
broke both pinky fingers at different times football
lots of fun but as I near 50 there is a realization of the fun ahead, lots of things I have "retired" from already

LoganSnake 05-31-2009 08:06 PM

Three broken fingers. All at different times. All from basketball.

duhgravy 06-02-2009 11:12 AM

I broke the same ankle in different places twice (softball).

healer 06-02-2009 12:31 PM

I also dislocated every one of my non-opposable digits from basketball.

Man, I miss that game.

ReggErving 06-06-2009 05:01 PM

Discloated middle finger-Golf
Broken middle finger-wrestling
Broken thumb-water polo

Atreides88 06-07-2009 10:14 AM

I blew my knee out playing football, and also tore some cartilage in both of my shoulders. Other than that, I just have a few scars from cuts and scrapes. So far I haven't had any serious injuries while practicing martial arts, but I figure it's only a matter of time.
